P2837 and P287B 2012-2018 Ford Focus (& Fiesta) With DPS6 Transmission: Common Issues

This video is a continuation of my series on the 2012-2018 Ford Focus common issue. In this video I go over, what I have seen as, the most common point of failure inside of the DPS6 transmission. The point of failure is a broken shift drum locating tab inside of the transmission case. (I think the proper term what I am calling a locating tab is a stop.) This locating tab is just behind the upper shift drum. This tab is much smaller than the locating tab on the lower shift drum. I also go into a procedure that I came up with to help get a better "feel" or "understanding" of what is wrong with the inside of the gear box before it has to be taken apart. I also go into how I personally like to repair a transmission with this particular failure.
As mentioned in the video codes P2837 and or P287B should be set in the TCM when this problem occurs. You should experience an SES lamp on.
Typically just a transmission case half will be needed. Of course all the one time use parts required for this repair will be needed too. The rest of the transmission should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Replace additional parts as needed.
The use of a repair manual is a must when diagnosing and repairing this transmission. Do not use this video as a repair manual....I'm simply sharing my experience with you and giving you a tool to help in this video.
Note: The 6.5 turns and 4.5 turns on the clock gears from stop to stop, mentioned in the video, is approximate.
***Also it is entirely possible that a faulty TCM could be the cause of these codes. However, I have yet to see a TCM fail in this particular way.

Thanks man. I've been having so many issues with my transmission and don't want to replace it. You're right though, they are very durable and the learning feature is awesome. Thanks again

Dealership tech here, I’m sitting on at least 15 Focus and Fiestas that need TCMs :( these suckers are on back order and have been since the longest. Surprisingly enough though this issue isn’t as common. I’ve done a handful of case replacements for this concern. But not as often as the shudder on acceleration. Nonetheless I love these little cars. 7 years of consistent workflow because of these. Thank you Ford.

Hey buddy thanks for the amazing explanation. I've a 2012 focus that is throwing in p2831, p2832 and p287b at the same time. Got it diagnosed by the dealer they tried pinpoint test and tcm adaptive learning three times and it failed. Checked for tsb/ssb found none. Car is in limp mode, and i can definitely hear some clanks/grinds within the tranny when shifting in limp mode. Also, previously during winter i had a p090c actuator circuit B low code coming in, which after changing actuators remained but went away as soon as summer kicked in.

Is there a video somewhere explaining the process of reshimming differential? Would lt be the same procedure as other transmissions?

If only someone made an aftermarket control module with a stepper motor that counts turns and doesn't rely on repeated hard stop calibration

I have a 2018 ford fiesta and when I slow to turn onto my daughter's road, it is a slight hill and the transmission acts like it has a delay in shifting

I have codes P2872, P70A3 would this be the problem? Car will drive but transmission over heat on display and slipping. I was going to change the clutch. Removing transmission tomorrow. Sure wouldn’t hurt to do the upper gear test though.

I think I’ve just successfully ruined my trans moving the forks in my 2012 Ford Focus I was winding in and out the forks to try free up stuck open position sensor a .. the screw that’s on the fork came out and the fork no longer springs back after rotating anticlockwise .. it changes in all gears but won’t go in top gear now .. other than that it’s working ok but I’m sure it will over hear if it doesn’t go in all gears properly???

If that locator tab is sheared off, and I reset the check engine light, why does the car drive fine and as of yet the fault hasn't happened again yet?

@Barbour’s Auto Help. I have 2018 ford focus with these same codes and only 93k miles. Am I just better off replacing the whole transmission and do clutch on it? Or is there some troubleshooting I can follow before throwing money at it.
