I have a 2001 ML320 with 290k miles and had the same issue. I was getting P0400 & P0410. I replaced the EGR valve and was down to P0400. When I removed the check valves, both sides were completely clogged with carbon. After using a wire, vacuum cleaner and carb spray, no more codes. Thanks for the video!

I had to tap the check valve on each side with a wrench to loosen it up. Then twist it left to right as you lift to avoid breaking off the bottom sleeve on the valve.

@@toycarr1yea I broke mine off on the first one I removed , I tapped the second one lightly then twisted it side to side so I didn’t break it also . Split them open scrubbed with diesel, washed with water & air dried them before finally soda blasting the surface oil stains away down to bare aluminum. They look brand new . I also soda blasted all the intake manifold components while it’s open for service & both cylinder heads

Thank you Master DGM! I found an alternative method if you can not remove the diverter without breaking the pot metal insert: 1. Unscrew the phillips screws and carefully pry the upper portion of the diverter with Vacuum Diaphragm 2. Using a pic tool break loose the inner diverter component's rubber seal, take are not to tear it wear prying it out. I used a right angled pic tool to slip past flap and pull up from the corner. If your lucky it will stuck to the upper portion. 3. Soak inner flaps and lower part of the upper portion in GDI Foaming Valve Cleaner, brush or safely scrape the carbon. Take on the diaphragm, not sure if cleaner will harm it. Use shop vac to remove large carbon solids. 4. Used paint can opener to carefully scrape out the clogged tube trying my best not to allow large debris to fall into the intake. One can sacrifice a flat screw driver and bend the tip to make a scooper. Sprayed Valve Cleaner. If port is clogged it will not allow fluid to drain. As Master DGM stated it is liken to cleaning out a drain. 5. Used bare (paint free) wire coat hanger bent to a slight curve and started to snake out the port thru the bottom half of the diverter after soaking of the valve cleaner to help liquify the carbon as not to allow solid to clog the Cat down the line. Yes, if you allow too much debris down the line, it may clog the Cat so be cautious here. You should be able to go about 3-5 inches past the bottom of the diverter pipe. 6. After several snake session and tested with Valve Cleaner it will finally brake loose and drain thru. Be patient it will happen. Driver side had build up but cleaned out quickly. Passenger side ( US ) appears to suffer the worst of this horrible design. 7. Reset OBDII with engine off key in ON position. Do Emissions Drive Cycle. It should reset if O2S is not damaged. Of Course the best Course of Action is Intake Manifold Removal and Cleaning of all Passages on my W209 CLK320. This method cured my Mom's 97 LX450 infamous plagued "Insufficient Flow".

I currently got the same issue..thanks for posting. I've snaked out all the carbon. I sprayed brake cleaner down. It took time to go down, it's dissolving everything. Gonna do it 4 or 5 times to be sure

@@mikep6785 Mine broke on the passenger side when I tried to get it out. Only suggestion I can give you is let the base soak in some penetrating oil or PB Blaster once you have the bolt out that holds it down. It is made out of some thin metal so chances are if it's been in there for a while it is going to break but it's worth a shot.

I understand how to hook up vacuum pump and apply vacuum. I assume there should be no leak. What should happen when I blow air through the inlet? Should Guage move or not? I hate to remove divert er valves needlessly. Thks..jc

Would it cause my car to jerk if the Secondary system don’t turn over the Fan ?? & the Valves are clogged ?

hell i replaced that part but when taking it out the tip broke and stayed inside the hole in the engine, i tried very to pry it out but wouldn't budge so I used a screw driver to brake it loose the problem is a lot of huge chunks of cast iron fell through the hole and I couldn't get it out i ran the engine anyways since i couldn't get them out, my question is could those part fall inside the engine and destroy my engine and if i can still remove the pieces how can I? thanks. good video by the way, also noticed you too broke the tip off.

I have the same code as you. On the other hand, I have another problem, the engine marks me that I have 3 cylinders without spark. The problem if there is no acceleration above 3000 rpm, but if I do not raise the rpm I can get up to 70 mph. The problem is that it does not send me codes and I do not know if the problem of p0410 affects acceleration in that way. I don’t know if you have experience with something like that. Thank you

Hi Emmanuel. The P0410 code is for the Secondary Air system. To my understanding the secondary air system is only used to enrich the exhaust with oxygen on startup, in order to reduce the tailpipe emissions. As far as the no spark issue the first thing I would do is physically check to see if I have spark at each of the spark plug wires and coils. If not, I would check them with an ohmmeter and see if they are within the factory spec. If I don't have a factory spec of what they should read, I check a known good coil and compare the readings. If all of them are not firing you will definitely have some acceleration issues. Other things that you may also want to check would be a plugged catalytic converter, fuel pressure. Hope this helps you.

Do you know where you could find the small port hose?

Hi pappy notpapi. If you are referring to the small hose that goes to the diverter valve vacuum port, you should be able to find it at your local parts store. It is just a vacuum hose that comes in various sizes. The parts stores here usually have it on rolls behind the counter and sell it by the foot. If you don't know the size just cut off a small piece of it and take it with you and I am sure they can match it up.
