My replacement EGR is on the way and I need to do this on my 2012 Jetta which started throwing the P0403 again at 350K KM (did it back at 300K but came good till now). Although I’ve been an enthusiast DIY mechanic to older VWs all my life, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a horrible job to do, I’d seriously rather rebuild an engine. Thanks for the very detailed video and I hope to check back in within the next week or so and say it wasn’t such a pig of a job as I expected, but I reckon it’ll be terrible from the videos I’ve seen. Things we do to save money and keep these old workhorses going!

Hi, nice work but you dont need to take the subframe off and also you dont need to take off the oil pipes that goes to the turbo, there is enough space to take the EGR off without the extra work and of course without extra costs of replacing the gaskets if doing so. Also the EGR metal part doesnt need to be replace as it can be cleaned and the EGR valve motor and vacuume part can be bought individually saving a lot of money also. Regarding the metal pipes that goes to the front they can also be cleaned with household chemicals. Cheers

I admire the patience you have to breakdown the various parts to get to the EGR valve and associated intake manifold. It seems quite an arduous task. In hindsight, would it have been easier to take out the engine and service that side of the engine? I have some experience with the older VW diesel engines, e.g. pompe duece, and servicing the EGR and intake manifold is less complicated than these more modern common rail engines. As an aside, I wish VW had maintained the orientation of the engine, as in the B5 and B5.5 Passats, rather than transverse as is now common. How I hope VW will produce all electric versions of their popular models. Maintaining the ICE and all the anti-pollution equipment such as this EGR system is ridiculous!

Hi great video help. I've never done one of these yet, but about to. Can you tell me if after replacement I will need any advanced coding other than using vagcom to clear the fault codes. You don't need any advanced codes from the dealer do you?

  • @wawayltd

Thanks! No I didn't need to use any coding - it was just "plug and play". If you have some fault codes, any basic scanner should be able to clear them. Perhaps, after replacement they might clear themselves eventually.

My advice is to buy an original EGR from a VW dealer. They are over twice the price, but for a good reason. I have seen non-original EGR fail shortly after installation. It has been a revision of the cooler from 03L131512CF to 03L131512DQ, and the latter is a better part then the ones (CF) fitted from factory.

Thank you for the great video. I have an audi a3 2.0 tdi wit the same EGR. The car was throwing P0121 at first then p0403. Long story short the throttle body was absolutely packed with carbon. Took it out cleaned it and it worked fine with smooth engine shutdown. After 1000 miles the engine started throwing p0403 again. It shuts down smoothly without shutter. I doubt the issue is EGR Valve since the engine has only 75k miles (well i dread it more than doubt...) I was wondering what you think it would be? Any advice on how to track down the issue? Cheers

  • @wawayltd

Thanks 👍 P0403 points on EGR. I don't think it should affect engine shutdown. I had this code on low miles too, then for some reason it was gone for a while and came back on high miles. When it came back, I could say it was definitely bad - lack of power and flashing glow plug light. This is what happened to my car, sorry don't know straight answer what to do in your case.

@@masihd1405 In engines like ours EGR valve and throttle body are not even close to each other. As far as I know P0403 relating to EGR. Not sure exactly how to test. I remember connecting scanner, look on live data while running the engine. It can show you position of valve opening in %, also shows deviation, egr error. But I can't say what parameters there should be and what percentage of error is acceptable.

@@wawayltd Your problem/symptoms were identical with my 2011 VW Sharan 2.0 CR TDI CFFB.103 KW, 404.000 Km driven car, I purchased when was 2,5 years old with 217.000 Km on board back in 22 November 2013, car's name is Böze Wagen. In late time I had discovered a connection when the engine was warm, then the flashing glow-plug light (or flashing light bulb wire) came in almost immediately, and that would be not a problem if not paired with limp mode, but this is the way 😒. When the engine was started cold, the the flashing light came out erratically, but more and more often. Also I cleaned the intake manifold (for the first time, there was 600+ grams of oily carbon deposit measured by weight before/after cleaning). I cleaned the intake valves and throttle body (for the EGR). Then I was thinking to clean the DPF/catalysator unit and EGR cooler too, which I did with detergent, carburetor cleaner fluid and muriatic acid (10% HCl) and lots of soaking time, water and compressed air. The two lambda sensor and the two temperature sensor I cleaned ultrasonically. I have the videos, maybe I will post them. Anyway, when I was removing the DPF filter that is needed to take out the EGR cooler, I noticed that my flex pipe - is a component of the DPF filter - is completely broken, then I discovered that the subframe bushing that holds the transmission pendulum is torn all the way, so this explains everything. The subframe bushing broke, this allowed more engine/transmission movement, and that broke the flex pipe all the way. Then the more oxygen measured on the second lambda sensor triggered the flashing glow-plug light on the dashboard. As the lambda/oxygen sensor is working well only in heated conditions, and also has it's own heating element, then is logical that was triggered almost immediately when the engine was warm before startup then when the engine was cold, and the software let some time before triggering the alarm. Anyway, now I am in the the process of installing back everything, I welded a new flex pipe to the DPF, but I came to this video to look at each bolt where it goes, I put them in order, but I do not remember well the order when the parts came out, so I had some trouble finding the place for the nuts and bolts. Wheels and Motors video helped me a lot, in the past also I had help on other repairs. Many thank and keep up the good work 👍, peace.

  • @wawayltd

I know that fans have mind of their own. System decides when to switch them on. Why and when - I don't know, but I don't worry about it, as long as there no errors. It has a connector that switches it on and off, but it's only connector - signal comes from ECU, but when it decides to put it on - it's a bit of a mystery for me. I would assume it's a bunch of parameters, not just one sensor. However - I'm not professional 😏

If you come to Halfords or Euro Car Parts - they sell some stuff like bottles or sprays for EGR cleaning, and instructions how to use that are on them... However to be honest, in this car, if EGR developed a problem, cleaning might not help. Unlike previous engine generation, where valve was so close to intake and got clogged up with mixture of oil and soot, here we get just soot and it shouldn't give too much trouble. You can use some of that stuff I mentioned above and see how it goes - maybe they sell it for reason.. I that doesn't help, then you'll have to either replace it or I also seen people taking it out for a clean..

@@naeemmohd797 Hi, sorry to hear that it didn't help.. I bought mine in TPS, unit itself + gaskets and clamps all together was 416 pounds, that's the price you would get from dealership. I don't know how good is EGR from Euro Car Parts, probably should be good too, because they also give warranty. I don't have much experience dealing with these units, so I'm afraid I can't give you good advise. Apart from this one about year ago, I bought same unit from eBay for like 100 pounds, it had to go on different car, Seat Altea XL 1.6tdi. And this unit from eBay didn't last long. I don't know whether that was because of bad quality or because they done bad job (I didn't fit that one) or something else went wrong.. I would recommend get it from somewhere with warranty and get it done by someone who can guaranty that it will work. With your job you want it to be done once and for good, isn't it?

I'm very sorry Muhammad, there are few reasons why I can't fix your car: 1. I don't know what's wrong with it. I only know how to replace EGR unit, that's all. What if the fault is somewhere else? Electrics? I don't know how to diagnose it properly.. 2. The garage where I filmed it is not mine, my friend kindly lets me to use it occasionally, and I don't want to misuse it. 3. As I said I'm slow - it can take long time, and time is something that I don't have now. I can earn in taxi, but I also spend a lot of time building new version of my website, and it needs to be finished before hosting runs out for my old one. 4. This job is too serious for me, it's not something I do every day. I'm alright to risk my car, but I don't want to mess up yours. Try to shop around, try to find good garage that can take you sooner. I'm sorry, but the "stars are not aligned" properly for me to fix your car. Hope you get it sorted.

I too have a problem with my 2.0 TDI Alhambra where I've noticed a deep rumble noise like air blowing when driving around town, smell of exhaust in the car when I stop at lights, exhaust smell in the engine bay, and I can see smoke appear from the area of the turbo (a puff of smoke appears immediately when the engine starts). It's been trying to do DPF regen all the time, and was throwing a P2456 sensor fault so I changed the sensor and adapted it with VCDS (before the noise/smoke puff issues were noticed) but now I'm getting a P0299 low boost code. I don't know if it's an exhaust leak around the turbo area, or a blocked DPF, or a faulty/blocked EGR, or something else. Did you get yours sorted? What do you refer to when you say the bracket on the turbo? Thanks.. Also, editing this because I forgot to mention it goes into limp mode if I give it too much power, for example when accelerating onto a motorway.
