Tchaikovsky's "Tebe poyem" (To Thee We Sing) is part of his larger choral composition, the "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom" (Op. 41, C-dur), written in 1878. The composition consists of texts taken from the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and is a unified cycle of chants for mixed choir, consisting of 15 small pieces ("Tebe poyem"-No. 10).
At the Divine Liturgy, the hymn "Tebe poyem" is sung as part of "A Mercy of Peace" (the final part) and is a reflection of the priest's sacramental prayer, conveying its meaning. During the singing of "Tebe poyem", the priest begins an epiclesis (from Ancient Greek: ἐπίκλησις "invocation"), in which he prays for the pouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Eucharistic bread and wine.
Although Tchaikovsky's Liturgy was not originally conceived as a concert piece, but rather as part of a church service, its first public performance took place on December 18, 1880, at a meeting of the Russian Musical Society in Moscow. The very fact of the public performance of the composition, which until then could only be performed within church walls, was of fundamental importance. According to press reports, the reaction of the public was far from unequivocal. And after the premiere the performance of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy in churches was banned. This was connected with the non-recognition of Tchaikovsky's work by the church authorities and his conflict with the Court Chapel. The ban was only lifted with Tchaikovsky's death: the Synodal Choir, which performed the Liturgy at the Moscow memorial service for the composer, has sung it annually since then on the composer's Memorial Day (usually at the Greater Church of the Ascension).
📌 Lyrics:
We sing to Thee,
We bless Thee,
We thank Thee, O Lord,
And we pray to Thee,
Our God.

Welcome to our channel!
The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.
Thanks to KZread, we are pleased to share these recordings with online audiences around the world who share our passion for this music 🌿
