Here’s what’s funny about these horns. I’ve played both and they SOUND like vintage French saxes, but they don’t blow the same. They tend to be on the dark, stuffy side. Your playing a perfect mpc. for these horns-incredible playing as always!!

Definitely hear more focus and more of an edge on the 76 and a softer more spread sound on the 66. It's cool to hear them side by side like this!

Your videos are great as well as your playing. If i wasnt a technician myself you would be on the top of my list of who to send my horns to along with Matt Stoher. You inspire practice. Thanks

Sound great John! I have a 66 RUL. Great sound. I had all the point screws changed to Selmer/Yanagisawa/Yamaha type screws and had an extra brace put on the key above the F key and with an adjustment screw. Now the horn stays in adjustment. This is the second horn i got from the local dealer in Sweden. The first horn was not glued properly at the bow. I was on a long tour and the horn got wierder every night. In London, Sax.Uk did their best but could not figure it out. Finally the tech in Sweden figured it out after calling another tech in Stockholm. Plus there was play on one of the lower stack rods. Mauriat talked with the Swedish importer at NAMM. And even though I had a 1 year guarantee on the horn, Mauriat refused to replace the horn. So the Swedish importer ordered 2 more and gave 1 to me. Mauriat has a good sound-but their quality control is lacking and their moral ethics are lacking.

Wow, after reading your story I had to ask the question, why didn't the repair person just Put an oversized rod in the lower stack?......... I also have had a hell of a time to get my horns playing optimal but, I have yamaha custom and a mark 6!

76 cut through with more contemporary brightness. Both very nice

    P. Mauriats definitely have a big, robust sound. The 66R has the darker tone I think, and the 76 is brighter, but not shrill

great playing, and a very helpful comparison. I have listened to many playtests of these horns and I like your sound the best. Are you using an Excalibur 8M mouthpiece with the medium chamber?

❗ I'd like to hear 66RX UL vs this system 76 II! In this video both sound amazing, i kind of like 76 a tiny bit more and it's cheaper! Next time maybe try to set audio level manually so it doesn't jump around! But it was not bad anyway!

yeah man. I love these comparisons. I think it would be better if you were playing soft also like a ballad, so we can hear all the colours of the horn, the 76 has better looks!

I could do some play tests like that also definitely 👍. I should explore more dynamic range on them when demonstrating them. I think maybe I just checked out too much Chris Potter 😄 haha

The 76 has more punch and focus. The 66 sounds more spread and a little warmer. Do one or both of these horns have the flute touch keys? I played a P once with those and it felt very foreign to me.

Hi thanks for listening! I am not sure if I understand what you mean by flute touch but I am going to guess that you mean incredibly light spring tension and action. They have medium spring tension currently because they are still factory setup, but before they go out the door to our customer I will give them both a full setup based on that particular customers preferences :). Easy peasy haha

Umm, (Sir/Ma'am) just 1 more thing 🤔. Wow! Both sound great, but.. the 66 (to me) has a more (dare I say it) MK6 sound, for which I'm partial to🤷‍♂️😂

I like the tone of the 76. It is clean, clear and strong. The 66R is no slouch with its smooth tone. I have been looking for a new tenor for a long time(I had an intermediate Yamaha tenor but sold it to pay for my auto insurance, lol). I first saw the P. Mauriat line at a Sam Ash store. I was surprised to see a portrait of Paul Mauriat next to these saxophones. And I was very impressed with the quality of these horns. I love the System 76 tenors with the large bell and bore. The 66 also has a large bell. But the 76 is the one I have eyes on. The choice of either dark lacquered, gold or the cognac lacquered is a small problem. Great demonstration and presentation.

Prefer the look of the 2nd sax. First looks a little 'halfway there' trappedin a world of semi reliced limbo
