For me it’s a toss up betw the New York, Pino and the TJ Signature Custom. The TJ was a tad warmer than the other two but the other two had a robust and big fat sound and I could feel the horns powering through. The NY and Pino both sounded really similar with maybe the Pino just a tinge bit edgier. Either way, can’t go wrong with any of the above 3! Will probably come down to price and personal aesthetic preference :) All winners!

I agree. I have a ref54 and don’t think that any of these horns other than the Kw have the deep and breadth of sound that I love with the 54. Sellers sound is more intimate. Would love to see you add the new Yanis to the show. More than a few think Yani is tops in tenors.

Interesting range from the clean and lean sounding Yamaha down to a full-bodied range of newcomers from different brands. My favourite ones are lying in the middle with the Selmer 54 on top and the Keilwerth a close second. Both are well rounded packages soundwise but the Selmer really was as I'd expect a Tenor to sound like. One thing ist for sure, though: You make all of them sing! Very nice presentation! 🎉

The SX90R and the Pino really stood out from the crowd with a character of their own. The rest sounded way too similar - without looking at them it would be hard to tell what instrument you are playing. But with the Pino and SX90R you could definitely tell that the instrument is different IMHO

Hi Michael If I do nothing about it the E3 is very slightly flat and, strangely, E4 is sharp. Not a problem as it's only really noticeable at slow tempi when there's time to correct the pitch. For reference, my Borgani is the Joe Lovano model. Best wishes, Alexander

Great video!......man, I heard a lot about your repair talents! I have an issue with two of my three tenors. First, I recently had my Yamaha custom overhauled in Sao Paulo and from the looks of it, the guys work is flawless every loose rod or key is as tight as new but, the response though it wasn’t too great before, now it’s worse ! I m thinking since he polished the neck tenon, it made a neck leak even more! Plus, before i would often see spit bubbles if I wobble the neck before disassembling it! My question is can I bring my horn to you shop and if so, when?........being a great player and a repairman, you should be able to figure out what’s up! If you can’t could you please give me a suggestion I would greatly appreciate ! I’ll be back in New Orleans in a few weeks ! 🙏🏾 thanks!

I must agree with you, the TJ was definitely the brightest, the Selmer had the richest or maybe darkest tone. I play a Yamaha YTS 61 from the 70's. The 62 he played had the least interesting tone which supports my theory that Yamah's are the white bread of the saxophone world. Well made, consistent, easy to play and boring.

  • @aidanburrows4177

@@joeholland9593 I recently watched a professional tenor player play and compare his own Selmer to a Yamaha 280 which belonged to one of his students. The Selmer played as expected - nice and rich sounding. But the Yamaha, despite being a student instrument, had some edgier tones and was much more interesting to me. He concluded by saying that he could get the sound he wanted from the Selmer, which of course, is all that’s necessary. To me the Yamaha he played was not boring at all, just the opposite in fact. If I could get the sound I want from a Yamaha then I would go with that.

@@aidanburrows4177 The lead alto/soprano in my jazz band plays Yamaha 82Z specials (both horns) they both sound really good, but he's really good (a university instructor). I would not say his tone is edgy, but it is definitely present and I think that has to do with the constancy of the horns and his abilities. My tone on tenor and more so on alto (not a Yamaha) is kind of raccous, ok for somethings, not great for ballads. My Yamaha is great, it's just not special if you catch my drift.

The Keilwerth, Eastman 52, NY Signature, Pino I and TJ Custom sounded very similar to each other, with the Keilwerth being the darkest. Those 5 had big, edgy sounds. The one I least cared about was the Eastman 650. Not a bad horn, but didn't stand out. My favorite sounding one was the Selmer, followed by the Yamaha.

Nice to hear ‘The Wave’ again! Alright so- they all sounded great and you have a captive audience. Here’s my take FWIW! …. Selmer Ref 54: ‘Broad Sparkle’ Eastman 52nd: ‘Drier slightly nasally’ (not a criticism) Yamaha 62 iii: in between 1 and 2. Would be my choice for a Smooth Jazz cruise 😆 Keilwerth: Woah - Free Blowing! great for big band or just for making presence felt. JL Sig: felt in some ways like the Selmer but with something else- Conn or Vintage American feel to top end Eastman 650: slightly more compact or focussed than its sibling the 52nd- which I preferred. Sounded v good but less complex TJ Raw: huskier, drier, big sound Pino 1: ‘unputdownable’ is my take. Seems to me like an incredible modern yet vintage sounding horn. Something special in the middle to top end that sounds like nothing else.

i too have tested my 1954 Selmer Tenor against a Yanakasawa t 902 and the difference is the Weight and the action of the harder to press newer springs needing a younger man than me to play that YANNY . There is nothing like the fluid action of an old Mark IV Tenor that is broken in over decades . Making the comparison is laughable because they all sound great but the Selmer is easier to play because of its age and durability . "JUST SAYIN' GUYS" bobby G...........

Keilwerth and Trevor sounded fattest to my ears, and I like big fat sounding tenors!
