    When I was at college in the early 80's in Florida, one of our instructors was a Republic Test pilot on Long Island flying P-47's during WWII. He had some stories... "Pops" Alonso. (Hope I spelled his name right).

    Depends. Ray Wagner (American Combat Planes Page 227) lists the P-47B model as 429 mph at 27,800 feet. P-47C model as 433 mph at 30,000 at War Emergency power. Early P-47Ds had the old style cockpit as well and were probably a similar top speed. Erik, which model is this restoration? Which motor is in it? I couldn't read the fine print on the left hand side of the fuselage between the cockpit and the engine. The tail number "looked" like NX4747D so my guess is its an early D model before they went to the bubble canopy.
