The Ukrainian folk song "Oy, na hori tam zhentsi zhnut'" (Оn the Hill the Reapers are Reaping) belongs to the Cossack historical songs. Here are sung about the campaigns of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, which in the minds of people are associated with the names of historical figures, each of which enjoyed wide popularity.
Today, there is no consensus about the time of the song's origin, the reproduced events and prototypes of historical figures. However, of the several versions, it seems more likely that the song was created in the 20s of the XVII century, after the death of one of the greatest Ukrainian hetmans (who did not lose a single battle) Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny. Thus, the age of the song is about 400 years, during which the text of the song has changed and gradually acquired new versions.
The main idea, reflecting the worldview of the Cossacks: personal interests should always yield to public ones (as in the case of Sahaidachny and his wife). Women were traditionally not allowed in the Sech, and therefore Sahaidachny seems to speak carelessly about his wife. In fact, it is for the sake of women and children, for the peace of their native land, Cossacks have been in heavy campaigns and battles for almost his entire conscious life, giving their lives for it. The song is upbeat, full of optimism, subtle humor and self-irony.

The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.

История ее появления в репертуаре хора тесно связана с непростой судьбой его дирижера-основателя Дениса Мицкевича. Будучи совсем еще молодым человеком в послевоенный период, Денис вместе с семьей оказался в австрийском лагере для перемещенных лиц «Парш», где ему удалось познакомиться с казаками. «Мне посчастливилось (смеется)… или не посчастливилось сидеть в лагере за колючей проволокой с казаками» - вспоминает Денис Мицкевич много лет спустя в одном из интервью. Переняв у казаков несколько традиционных песен и их манеру исполнения, он постарался передать эти знания хору. The history of its appearance in the repertoire of the Chorus is closely connected with the difficult fate of its founding conductor Denis Mickiewicz. As a quite young man in the post-war period, Denis, together with his family, landed in the Austrian camp for displaced persons "Parsch", where he managed to get acquainted with the Cossacks. "I had the fortune (laughs)... or misfortune to sit in a camp behind barbed wires with the Cossacks" - recalls Denis Mickiewicz many years later in an interview. Having adopted several traditional songs and their manner of performance from the Cossacks, he tried to pass this knowledge to the Chorus. His arrangements of Cossack songs (Russian and Ukrainian) have been passed down and performed by different generations of the Yale Russian Chorus for 70 years. Мне очень понравилась и песня, и исполнение, хотя я услышала ее впервые. Для меня более известны такие песни с условно украинской тематикой или формой исполнения, как "По Дону гуляет казак молодой", "Ты ж мене пидманула", "Проезжала конница", песни из фильма "Свадьба в Малиновке". Если что-то из этого исполните - я буду в восторге.

Это очень старая песня. В Воронежской области на юге России, в Россоши и Острогожске её ещё помнили и пели, когда я был маленький. Потомки казаков.

@@user-nz7eu8ll9u впервые термин «Украина» появился в 1187 году, в Киевской летописи. Летописец описывал смерть Переяславского князя Владимира Глебовича. Слову Украина 900 лет, а плутин хочет мир убедить, что Украину большевики или австрийцы придумали? Если он сказал - Сразу поверить?
Мы здесь в России тоже надеямся, что когда нибудь вы сможете приехать с гастролями и к нам и в Украину.
