Oxygenators are that portion of the perfusion apparatus that serves the functions of the patient's natural lungs during the period of cardiopulmonary bypass. They serve most of the lung functions, except the endocrine functions. Gas transfer from the gas to the liquid phase is driven by diffusion according to the partial pressure difference of the gas. None of the oxygenators can match the natural lung.
of the three types of oxygenators [film type, bubble type and membrane type], the membrane oxygenators are the most commonly used ones in today’s time due to its advantage over bubble oxygenator for reducing blood trauma and the risk of embolization. They consist of three compartments each for gas, blood and water.
The bubble oxygenator, I guess is obsolete in today's era but has given a lot of learning in the past,
The membrane material may be silicone rubber or polypropylene, polymethylpentene and may be configured in a Scrolled envelope, Parallel plate or Hollow fiber type. The hollow fiber membrane oxygenator may have blood inside the fiber or blood outside the fiber. In hollow-fiber membrane oxygenators, incorporating blood flow outside of the fibers, mixing is achieved by winding of the fibers, creating a crossing pattern, increasing blood exposure to the membrane surface.
