Oxnard ILS RWY 25 Approach In A Mooney Ovation

We are flying the Oxnard ILS RWY 25 approach in actual conditions half of the time starting out of Camarillo. This is best if viewed in the KZread High Definition setting. This video was created with the hope that it will help other rusty pilots like myself. Constructive criticism is always welcome. I am not an instructor but am continually striving to improve my flying skills. We received many unusual vectors on this day as it appeared Point Mugu was also handling an unusual number of military exercises as well as handling us GA pilots, meaning we got to do a lot more flying as we were vectored around for sequencing :-). A special thanks goes out to my safety pilot from Camarillo (KCMA), Chris Haga CFII, Camarillo Tower, and Point Mugu air traffic controllers.

0:10 Copying the approach clearance instructions out of Camarillo
0:58 Approach plate brief on the ground by reviewing top brief strip and key points in the plan and profile view like the missed approach proceedure, altitudes at each step down, ATIS and Tower frequencies, how to ID each fix, MSA and DA. Assure panel is set up to fly the approach.
4:17 Approach plate brief on downwind at 125 Kts (16" MP) at 4000'.
6:32 Twist, Turn, Time, Throttle, Talk
Note: 12.5" is a good manifold pressure to get on the glide slope
8:02 GUMPS Check, or pre-landing check: Gas (fuel selector on fullest), Undercarriage (gear down), Mixture (properly adjusted), Propeller (full take off position in case of missed approach), Safety Belts on.
9:05 We never received our missed approach instructions so we are asking for them from ATC. When in doubt, ask.
10:12 Outer Marker beacon is sounding; checking altitude against approach plate (1683' over the OM).
11:10 Trim is your friend! Not having the plane trimmed so it can fly hands off is one of the best ways to get off altitude, heading or both, and that can cause one to rapidly get behind the plane.
12:20 Using throttle to control descent rate; pitch to control airspeed.
13:15 Beginning Missed Approach (getting away from the ground ASAP). Going missed back to Camarillo for a GPS approach there...
Some errors included:
1. Did not start the timer at the FAF
2. Did not put the heading bug on 255 and did not dial in 3000 in the autopilot to serve as a reminder after getting missed instructions.
3. Did not ID Filmore VOR or the Oxnard ILS

That was a beautiful approach. You have done your homework.

I agree with "Colin's" comment below! However, very nice performance Mark - your "misses" weren't anything I'd find out of the ordinary in the compressed time you were operating in. Left comment to reply by "Colin" re: playing with throttle/trim on final...just my perspective. Very nice flight and cockpit management overall. Safe skies to you.

Unable to see altitude and airspeed indicators. Other than that enjoyed it.

You look like you are chasing the GS, especially as you got close. Easier way is to get a stable trimmed airspeed early on then use the yoke to stay on glide path. Dropping gear usually gives the right amount of drag to stay on GS with little adjustment. Fiddling with throttle and trim all the time just complicates things.

Agree, it look really good until he started plating around with the throttle.

Agreed; I never get focused on GS in an ILS approach, only relevance is IAS which just so happens to have the effect of keeping the plane in the air! Overly managing the throttle distracts from an already busy situation - main focus should be maintaining a good IAS and staying on GS; you can always declare missed and go-around. Keep it safe.

I fly most of my practice by hand and occasionally fly practice with the A/P. I usually fly A/P in actual with family and friends.
