    Do it as early as you can. It makes you a better pilot (even in good weather). And it is all much easier than you think. Reading books about IFR gives you the impression its a very complicated topic. It's not. Happy Landings, Guido

    Speed brakes are a wonderful addition to the Mooney airframe. I have flown Super 21 and Marks 21. Mooneys are so aerodynamically clean, they are easy to overspeed if one is not very careful. Thanks for great videos Guido. Very professional.

    Yes it is a great tool to control the speed and keep the e engine warm. They normally add 500fpm descent rate at the same speed and power setting. I will shortly have an other video that shows the use of SB's in a Mooney. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

    Mr. Warnecke, thank you for the precise explanations of phraseology. I am an air traffic controller and an instrument pilot, so I've seen both sides of the spectrum. Proper terminology and phraseology is crucial to separating and expediting traffic in airspace. I move over to military piloting later this year and I know your videos and strict adherence to procedures will benefit my flying. Cheers.

    I always enjoy your videos Guido and this is no exception - partly because it's in a single-engine GA aeroplane that I can identify with rather than your normal bizjets. Couple of questions: what technique are you using to adjust mixture - rich/lean of peak EGT or do you have target temperatures or fuel flow? And using speed brakes some miles from the airport - wouldn't it be more efficient to reduce power, or were you concerned about overcooling the engine?

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    @GuidoWarnecke

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Stu Peters Thank you, Stu. Mixture: this is airplane specific. With balanced fuel injectors, lean of peak is ok, otherwise rich of peak is my preferred operation mode. A lot of damage to the engine can be done, especially at high power settings. Speed brakes: the Mooney is very "clean", so you can't get the required descent rates without over speeding. The ice cap in Greenland is quite high, so if you come from the East you need a steep descent to reach BGBW at sea level. The speed brakes are small and no as effective as in a jet. Engine at idle is not a good idea. Happy Landings, Guido

    Very educational, as usual. Thanks a lot. If you have received the line-up-and-wait, and then the controller approved your request for a 60 second delay to complete your checks, is the "line up and wait" clearance to enter the runway still valid? From what I've seen "Airspeed building" seems to be British, and "Airspeed (is) alive" American. :)

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    +pinkdispatcher Honestly, I cannot answer this question. May be an ATC here knows this. Common sense would say, the clearance is cancelled. Correct: The airspeed call "building" is mire UK or South African. I still hold my South African ATPL valid. Happy Landings, Guido

    What values are you looking for in EGT in order to achieve the best mixture setting? When instrument panels were analogic pilots use to talk about an "inverted T" on the EGT gauge but nowadays everything is digital. Thank you for all these great videos Guido!

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    @GuidoWarnecke

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! When setting the mixture, a digital engine monitoring system helps as it monitors a cylinders of the engine. The older instruments cover the "hottest" cylinder only. Depending on the phase of flight (climb, cruise or descent) the mixture must set differnetly. In climb at high power settings typically 100F above ("rich") of the peak EGT. I cruise this can be set to peak EGT, to 50F rich of peak and in some engines even 50F lean of peak. Happy Landings, Guido

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    @GuidoWarnecke

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Andrew Silva Thank you, Andrew. The knobs on the very right of the cockpit are electrical circuit breakers. Each electrical component has its breaker. If you have a short circuit on one, you are able to isolate it by pulling the respective circuit breaker. Thus, it will not affect the entire electrical system of the aircraft. Happy Landings, Guido

    ah I get it, but this its totally not like what you have in your own personal vehicle, talking about the fuses, saying if one goes out all you have to do is pull it out and put in a new one, right?

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    @GuidoWarnecke

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrew, These are re-settable fuses, meaning you could push them in again. Normally this is not advisable, because usually the circuit breaker has popped out for a good reason: excessive amperes, normally caused by a short circuit. This may cause a fire hazard and can damage other electrical components. Unlike in a car, you give the pilot control over the circuit breakers, at least most of them. Happy Landings, Guido

  • @GuidoWarnecke

    @GuidoWarnecke

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Robert Haynes Hi Robert, I don't think it makes any difference. It is important to shut off avionics during engine starts to prevent voltage / amps surges. The Garmin G1000 has own battery supply, so the left screen remains on during engine starts, the engine instruments (oil pressure etc) are only on the screen. If you have any information showing the contrary, please let me know. Happy Landings, Guido

    +Guido Warnecke. Totally enjoy your videos! I've got tons of G1000 time. I'm a check pilot for CAP and the C182 shut down check list requires the avionics master off prior to idle cut off. i'd guess the mooney is the same but don't know for sure. The PFD does initially run off the stand by battery and it's normal to leave that on at shut down. We actually had a avionics master switch blow immediately after it turned on. Smoke and smell in the cockpit. Flight prior to it did not shut down properly. Correlation? not sure. I just follow the checklist. I'd love to fly with you someday! (currently a SIC on a B350)
