Owen Jones meets Frankie Boyle | 'Grenfell Tower residents were treated as less than human'

Frankie Boyle tells me he believes there’s ‘a connection between a Conservative government that wants to get rid of human rights legislation’ and the residents of Grenfell Tower ‘being treated as less than human’. He thinks a series of decisions show that the pursuit of profit was more important than fire safety, which he describes as 'deeply immoral'.
We also talked about Theresa May's woeful performance in the 2017 general election but why simply replacing her with a new 'broken sociopath' is not an adequate solution, why trust in the media is so low and the modern tendencies for faux outrage and judgmental moralising.

    As a labour voter I honestly think the grenfel tower residents were let down by labour who started the policy of cladding buildings as a desperate attempt to make the city look nice for the olympics and all three parties who all had big roles to play in the local council, and the coalition government and the Tory government. They were let down by the whole system not one part of it and why isn’t there a contingency plan already in place for any event were a tower block can no longer be lived in. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but aren’t councils supposed to think ahead? Their still probably isn’t a contingency plan now

Having a London Mayor and Assembly (which uses Proportional Representation voting system so your votes matter) for example who can use their powers to minimise the shit coming from the UK Conservatives and improve lives. It's a lifesaver for us Londoners.

    Grenfell tower fire started by a faulty hotpoint fridge according to enquiry ...Hot point found nothing wrong and reassured costomers of the fridge saftey ..no need to recall ...well someones lying and i dont think its hotpoint

  • @josiecooper8012

    @josiecooper8012

    The problem with the fire wasn't the source, it was the materials used in construction that led to it spreading rapidly, very clearly not properly fire rated and exposed the cut corners in construction cost. So, no the entire fire wasn't Hotpoint's fault, because it should have been contained by the building. But still, having a product involved with a huge scale disaster like this, they probably did their due diligence in checking safety.

    Frankie Boyle is totally spot on when he says the Conservatives don't represent the interests of the ordinary man and woman in their constituencies. They are there to represent the interests of money, of capital. Grenfell is a prime example. Cameron's "bonfire of regulations" led to the government in 2012 "repealing the fire prevention measures in the London Building Act. Had they remained in place, the Grenfell fire is unlikely to have risen up the tower." There continue to be many organisations like the Red Tape Initiative, "a self serving clique of old chums, insulated from hazard by their extreme wealth", and who have significant interests in loosening regulations for their own profit, who are continuing to decide whether ordinary people should be exposed to more risks like this. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jul/05/grenfell-fire-public-inquiry-stitch-up-red-tape-regulation-policy-exchange

    Am I dreaming or Britain is teasing itself if the nation should go back to stupid mode like in the era of British Leyland for example (70's & 80's)?Where everyone thinks Labour is the solution and it should be FREE FOR ALL... more like Free-fall! Some people talk about austerity? Do you really know what austerity feels like? Some sections of the society have NEVER been this lazy. Get a decent job or A JOB! Undermining governments NEVER did any good.

    In Northern Ireland, unlike the rest of the UK, they do not have the main political parties of Britain representing them. There is no Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dems etc, it is the only part of the UK that has this weird situation all because of religion and whether you are a unionist or not. Democratic Unionist Party, Ulster Unionist Party, Sinn Fein, Alliance Party, Social Democratic and Labour Party, Traditional Unionist Voice - these are the parties. The Conservatives tried and failed to have any impact, the other UK parties just sit back knowing not to bother.

    John King Ahhh calls it 'Londonderry' yet claims he had family members members involved in the civil rights campaign. (This is meant to be dry humour satirizing in part the fact that we can't make jokes about Northern Ireland. I'm not actually saying you didn't. It's depressing that I had to add this.)

    I was born in the city, in Altnaelvin Hospital. I went to Nazareth House PS School. I lived in Abercorn Road, Strathfoyle then Victoria Place. My family were involved in the march, and my grandfather and uncle were on the march that Sunday. They lived in circular road in the city.

    The pursuit of profit had nothing to do with the Grenfell Tower negligent manslaughters. It wasn't a private landlord was it? It was council. They aren't trying to make a profit off anything. If they had been there's no way they'd have take the risk of the inevitable massively lawsuits a private landlord would have to live with. Hell if it hadn't been subsidized housing every single resident would have moved out in fear for their lives.

    The thing is, racist 'comedy' in the 70's propagated (whether you like it or not, it did) a sense that racism was acceptable. Why is mocking the disabled any different? A situation that causes extreme stress and oftentimes harm to disabled people and their families AND contributes to the societal attitudes that deem disability as unworthy. It IS harmful. I know from personal experience.
