Fantastic example of two very intelligent people addressing serious issues. How many other ‘comedians’ would or could use the phrase ‘ad hominem’ when talking about popular TV comedy? Frankie is not an outstanding performer by chance or because he dares like some thug to break the boundaries; it’s because - as he tries to explain - his routines and every single ‘joke’ is premeditated, assessed and intelligently conceived prior to its delivery. As he says, it’s not about ‘banter’. His brilliant performances do not come by accident but from intelligent, informed and highly deliberated planning and scripting. In effect, asking him if he ‘regrets’ or would reconsider any of his material is actually a redundant question if you understand the processes that have led to any of his performances. If it is ever ‘off the cuff’ then that cuff is from Saville Row.

Stop covering about some celebrity being offended by some joke and start covering about the atrocities commited by the UK Government! That is what the BBC News crew should be doing, but all they seem to do is give out lies and half-truths, and talk about things that are none of my business! If I wanted to find out who got offended, I'll go and look it up.

totally agree.... Working class comedy where guys taking the piss out of each other is a long distant memory... Red Dwarf, Bottom, Blackadder or Only Fools and Horses for me were worth tuning into. Now it feels like a ever number of condescending liberal lecture panel shows or awkward situation comedy on TV at the moment. We don't have to go back to Alf Garnett but the best comedy for me will always be working class people taking the piss out of each other and having a laugh about it.

I don't feel you get this now in Comedy where people can just be witty and cruel to each other without it becoming an issue with certain viewers. I just wanted to comment the same thing, that Richard Osman played devil's advocate. But he also made some good points. TV should not be a place were literally everything goes, and the nuance of Frankie's Katie Price joke may be lost on the average viewer. Frankie is right in most of what he says, but he dodges some of those questions. Richard and Frankie have always had these discussion. I remember in one of his autopsies, Frankie proposed that Hollywood should be burned to the ground and Richard had the more sensible position.

My feeling about Osmond is that he's not stupid but a die-hard liberal and theoretically positivistic. Frankie talking about the fringe/mainstream as social constructions, for example, and Osmond defending them as self-evident with no evidence or argument doesn't point to him being stupid; it points to him as someone who would vigorously defend the status quo. Likewise, Osmond on New World Order equating liberalism with morality feels like he's just totally disinterested in, if not actively resistant of, exploring these things beyond comforting middle class sensibilities.

Frankie dancing rings around Richard. Richard Osman wants so desperately wants to brand himself as Mr Nice, Mr Mainstream BBC. I like Richard, but he’s patently just towing the BBC line in this interview with Frankie and not really giving Frankie the credit he deserves for his answers.

Honestly I thought Richard came on very strong here and I don't know why unless it was the nature of the program to form a debate. Seems dumb to debate this though, Boyle's position is completely reasonable and he hardly goes on about being denied opportunity. He knows the deal he makes the choice. Eyes open no regrets. Comedy is reactive, we see and filter through whatever damage we're carrying and bias we work with and try to share how it made us feel gross. We don't make the events.

In regard to the argument that TV is different to a gig because it is beamed into people’s homes instead of people choosing to go to a gig surely we choose to watch TV? We also choose to “just leave to TV on in the background”. If we have to put up with company’s trying to sell us everything under the sun in our living rooms then the odd tasteless joke should be ok. TV executives should treat us less like children, who need to be protected and more like adults who are free to make informed choices.

Richard Osma did not lay a glove on Frankie Boyle. Boyle is essentially saying fuck the status-quo (that is conceptually, not the band) Osman with his emotional 'tromelfuer' and Boyle dancing out of the way and then he would give Osman a little jab to remind him whose boss in that interview.

Producers like Osman are the reason TV has become boring and why so many artists are seeking out streaming platforms. The heavy handed censorship and empty content is why I don't subscribe to any standard television any more. This single interview has drastically changed my opinion of Osman.

Context for the below comments: before Pointless, Richard Osman was a TV producer, so his insights here are useful. It's not the best interview in the world, but Richard Osman was on Frankie Boyle's show after this so there's (likely) no animosity between them.

I think Richard is being a little daft with the "I wouldn't have let that joke be broadcast", "I would have apologised for the joke on your behalf" stuff. I mean for one thing apologising on behalf of someone when you know, and they have explicitly said, they take the contrary view, is immoral and disrespectful. Apologise on your own behalf. Secondly, Richard is saying would have prevented these jokes being broadcast; after the fact, after people had decided to take offence. He’s shooting an arrow and painting a bullseye around it.
