Come rendere più silenzioso l’ OWC Express 4M2.
Costoso, ma hanno elemosinato sulla ventola di raffreddamento.
Vediamo come rendere più silenzioso questa unità ssd m2

OWC should be ashamed for putting such a lousy design on thr market. Great job in modifying it!

BTW, just watched a video of a guy who completely removed the fan and been using it fanless for quite some time, now...
OWC sent me a replacement 1500rpm fan to replace the 2000rpm fan that came with the 4M2 unit I purchased just over a year ago. It is much quieter, no longer sounds like like a small air conditioner. The unit now emits a soft buzz, still louder than my whisper quiet first gen Mac Studio, but tolerable. Upon changing the new fan out for the old one, there were oddly only two screws holding the fan in place, even though the fan had four holes! I called OWC tech support, they looked up the specs and confirmed that the unit only comes with two screws. And though they conceded that this was not optimal for subduing vibration, they would not send me two additional screws. Upon further inspection, I noticed that each of the screws did not sink down into their holes to meet a submerged support ledge. So I went to a hardware store and purchased four 'M3 x 12, .50 pitch' screws, along with four #61, "O" Rings, size; 9/32" O.D x 5/32" I.D. I was able to sink this screw/O-ring combination into each for the four holes to help mitigate the fan's vibration. Surprisingly, there was no discernible difference. But again, the 1500rpm fan was night and day from the former one. Lastly, OWC's charge for the new fan was $22.51, UPS shipping included.
Great stuff. U had me getting ready to replicate this, till I saw the soldering involved. 😅😂
Marco sei stato in gambissima !!! e complimeni per il video con la musica azzeccata!!! 😄😄 COMPLIMENTI ! 👍
I've just removed the fan and its harness entirely and strapped individual m.2 heatsinks (7$) on each SSD. Temp has been stable at around 40C and absolutely zero noise coming from the 4M2
damn. I was just expecting simple swap out fan... but you took it to another level hahaha well done!!
Bearing in mind also - that flash memory (NAND) prefers 40C (especially during write cycles) - temps under that diminish longevity. Only the controllers need cooling, so in theory, small heat sinks on the controller only, might be best So many bloody details with this tech!
Wow...I hope OWC watched this video and took notes.
What I did was to just remove the two screws holding the fan in place and slip orings over the post and replaced the fan and screws. Quiet.

Agree, it is mostly the vibration transmitted, not the noise of the fan itself, it is pretty quiet outside.
Wow. Great work! Would have been interesting to see a dB measurement too for a loudness comparison. What's the heat rating of the plastic material you used for 3D printing the frame?
How the hell do OWC get away with making such noisy products ? Are all the staff deaf in the OWC design departement?

Producers get away with stupid design as long as customers buy them.
ciao, si può avere il link del modello 3d supporto della ventola?
AMAZING WORK. where can i download the 3d model for the fan bracket?

Any chance to download the 3d model for the fan bracket?

Do you have the 3d model so I can print it for my device?

Same question here, would really like to have the 3d model, Please 🙂
owc should hire you!!!
Why not simply attach the fan to the sliding external case?
I admire your dedication to DIYing the F out of that. But I probably would have just installed a Noctua and called it a day.
Can you upload your 3D CAD files please? I would love to mod mine the same way!
The new ones must have upgraded fans because I just bought 2 of the enclosures and they are totally silent. I made an 8 TB Raid level 0 array and a 16 TB Raid level 0 both using Apple RAID software. I love them both! Highly recommended

Don, could you please upload a quick cell phone video of your drive? I'm strongly considering this enclosure and I'd love to hear it.

I just bought one and mine sounds at least as bad as this one. Crazy why manufacturers of HDD/SSD enclosures pay so less attention to noise. I already had two extremely noise LaCie enclosures and thought it's a LaCie thing. But nope.

Or maybe you are more tolerant of noise? or maybe your place has other sources of noise like air-conditioned?

It is mostly the vibration transmitted by the fan bracket to the rest IMHO. by changing the material the vibration are not transmitted as much as with the original bracket.

Just received one today and it is noisy. Nothing catastrophic but not pleasant.
OWC could put a basic temp based controller, not that expensive. They have 600$ plus boxes with no temp control. Also a little bit of design will help, for example the mounting.
Good job but for me it's no. The product is expensive and on top of that I still then have to find a solution to not have it so noisy? As you have shown it could have been better engineered.
Can you send me the 3d modeling file?
Shame on OWC. Absolutely unacceptable design.
removing the fan altogether just using heatsinks seems the most sensible to me
