Overwhelmed? Do This! An Antidote to Feeling Overwhelmed

Are you feeling overwhelmed?
When you get overwhelmed, do you feel paralyzed, freeze up, or quit? Or do you “run amuck,” frantically trying to do everything? Or get irritable, defensive? Maybe you procrastinate or avoid the task?
When you start to have a bad day, do you go out of your way to bring to mind every single bad thing that is happening or has ever happened? Or do you just feel like there is so much to do that it’s pointless to even start? These behaviors are all functional in the short term - they give us an excuse to shut down and curl up in bed. But they won’t help you in the long run.
On the other hand, some people have the habit of sprinting about trying to do everything for everyone until they become completely exhausted and shut down. This might get some things done, but it also isn’t sustainable in the long run.
We often develop habitual responses to high levels of stress. The tendency is to shrink back, withdraw, or protect oneself. Look at these responses. Each is a type of fight/flight/freeze response, triggered by an overload to the alerting part of the brain, the sympathetic nervous system. These responses are natural, but they often get in the way of getting anything done.
What are your behaviors when you feel overwhelmed? How well are they working?
The deep brain (the brain stem and the limbic brain) is not built to multitask efficiently. Our cortex can do it to a degree, but juggling multiple tasks freaks out our core brain and triggers an emotional response. Fortunately, this is something we can counteract in a few simple ways.
The antidote to being overwhelmed:
Write it down (do a brain dump or a mind map)
Break it down (into small concrete steps)
Prioritize (choose what is most important and say no to the least important tasks)
Do one thing

I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

When i get overwhelmed, I feel like I need to do everything at once and then start to get easily aggravated with everything. Even though I start doing things I still feel like I'm disorganized or have way more to do until I'm done. I could write myself a checklist and mark things off to feel that I'm making progress, but I will still feel stressed that I'm still not done

My trick for this is to remind myself that it's OK if things aren't completely done, and stop trying to be a perfectionist. If you are often a perfectionist, you can even trick yourself by challenging yourself to purposely not finish something on your to-do list. You get points for accepting that you did NOT finish something. and taking a bit of time to unwind and relax. Take a few moments to breathe, close your eyes, get a drink of water, splash your face with water, whatever you need in the moment, then center yourself to get started on just one thing.

@@lishayost144 this is great advice for me, thanks! Often times I find it hard to even get started for my self care. The important stuff I do get prioritized. Probably because of the adrenalin for the "consequences" if I don't. I feel like I can't do it, I have pain and I'm so tired, I'll wait till I feel better. Executive dysfunction at it's finest? I'm not sure how to tackle this, except for just doing it. Which sounds super easy, but not sure what's holding me back. The lack of self love alone..? I try to be kind and gentle with self. It's so frustrating in my mind I'm in ongoing battle. Well, hope we all get better each day one step at a time. We made it so far. To me it's more like: Everything needs to be done at once. So I get overwhelmed and nothing done. To be fair, if there is an urgent issue I tackle it with the adrenalin rush. Which is generously sponsored by the fear of negative consequences if I don't get those things done. So, then I'm a soldier and do the things (with my super tensed body). And then I'm even extra exhausted to even do anything. I hope everyone remembers to hold on and do your best and God takes care of the rest. 🌌💖💫

If you have the ability to create art, do it as much as you can. Sorry, That must really suck if you are an artist with a damaged hand. Look out for out of the box solutions if available. When it occurs badly, take a step back, give yourself an hour or so rest a bit without feeling any guilt. I am so mentally exhausted after work that I barely can get chores done, look for a career, etc…..much less work on any kind of creative outlet. I am always struggling to keep my job and keep up with a raised # of production standards.

A million hugs to you.

I love it that you made eye contact with her, even though you were talking to (for) the camera. Making her feel important is such a high priority. I'm reading Reclaiming Conversation by Sherry Turkle right now... so many people are distracted by their devices and other things, and they are neglecting their children. Neglect causes all kinds of mental disorders, it seems...

Thank you so much for these. I've struggled with mental illness and emotional instability since my late childhood but i wasn't talked too about it just "you better knock it off" for the early parts, and complete enabling due to exhaustion on my mother's side in the later years and only at 22 am I now just figuring out what is going on and how to manage insane, loud emotions but your videos resonate so much with me. Idk if it's your energy or your tone and pattern of speech but your words sink in so much deeper, almost like how a mothers words are gospel. I am so grateful that you decided to put your practice on the internet and i feel so lucky to have found you. You have helped me more in an hour of watching your videos than 5 months of face to face therapy and for that, much thank you ❤️❤️❤️

I have watched this video for 4 times already, and just now I could digest and apply the content. I have just become aware about the thoughts and emotions that are discussed. Despite the fact, that I understood everything watching it before, it was like "yeah, yeah, I should do it", and just now I remembered situations from my life where I was avoiding things to do and people, because I have put too much stress on myself, telling myself that I have to be able to do it all. I have just realised how can I apply those simple and straightforward rules. Thank you for this video !

Grace is absolutely beautiful 💕 💕 💕 thank you so much, this is exactly the advice I need. We got our house decorated over a year ago and I've been meaning to get the spare bedrooms pulled together. One is my yoga room the other will be a dressing room, I've done 90% of the yoga room, yesterday I did hand wash all the things that needed done, so I only have a little bit to do and the room will be ready. Then I'll move onto the back room, after that it's organising makeup, toiletries etc. I appreciate your help and advice so much Emma, thank you xxx

Omgoodness. Great content. Loving the bundle of adorable joy in your arms too. I clicked on your Udemy courses to buy them all (they are &14.99 in AUD) but when I signed in to buy them they are not applicable to me. It says I don’t qualify for these purchases. I could never afford them otherwise. Big sigh...😞 I wish I was on your email list for any sales that may come up. I’m starting a year of full time uni next week to study mental health at 50, but starting life from literally scratch, so to speak. These could have really helped personally (& I could just manage to pay them off on my credit card) and in my course and future employment helping others. I guess, for now, I’ll have to binge watch your videos and take notes. Love the content. Enjoy all of your babies! It goes by so quickly. Blessed Be. 🙏🏻
