Overseeding Rye Grass

In this video, we get set up to spread 1500 lbs of rye grass over approximately 50 acres of land. We use a broadcast spreader and a harrow.

Don't be discouraged. At worst it's a video dairy of your life. You could be inspiring your grandkids. Or your great grandkids. Or someone trying to get started in farming. Keep it up. Happy holidays. And God bless

It's a great idea to over seed because it will help run weeds out once it is established good. The place looks great.

We overseed with winter wheat, and once we get a good hard freeze we overseed clover for the thaw, (deer food plots) helps put nitrogen back in the soil. Costs are a huge factor to be sure. We mix about 600 pounds of pelletized lime in per acre, our PH is low for the most part at 5.5.

Thanks for feedback. I’ve thought about wheat. I need lime as well.

If you put winter wheat down, ask for the "grazing winter wheat" for cattle operations, withstands grazing better. I use it for deer as they take it down to the ground fast when food gets short.@@HeritageFarmsTexas

East MS hay farmer here, no cows.I do similar for a spring crop. Planted 90 acres this fall of ryegrass and crimson clover. 25 pounds ryegrass and 10 pounds clover per acre. This gives me a cover/cash crop on fields in the winter and also this combination is great for the soil since the RG makes super deep roots and the cover puts nitrogen in the soil to help kick start the spring grass. Since I have no cows I actually mow the fields twice to keep the grass from lodging and then let it go in the spring to cut for hay.

I've been considering putting down hybrid buffalo grass seed between our rows of pecan trees. We don't have livestock so it would just be to increase the quality of pasture grass and cut down on weeds and blue stem. I took a trip just northwest of you last week to pick up an old Nut Hustler air blast sprayer. Everything works but I'll have a project on my hands similar to your fuel tank project. I think I'll try coating the rusted metal with POR-15 then paint, change out hydraulic lines and re-work the nozzle sprayers. Happy Thanksgiving.

Hey that was interesting, thank you. We’re down here in Deep South Texas and it’s been so dry. I was just talking to my husband about over seeding. Is Rye only a winter crop?

Yes. Rye only grows during winter. Really likes cold weather and kicks in before spring. It’s a great bridge in the spring.

All going well will it take long for the rye to germinate, Will there be much feed from the grass

  • @HeritageFarmsTexas

Thanks for watching. If we get rain, it should germinate within weeks. It’s a fast growing grass. Once 6” high, you can graze it down to 3”, move cattle, and put them back on it a week later.
