I disagree on the Kallax being overrated. Obviously, if used as described in the video, it would be problematic. But it is perfect for labeled Cropper Hoppers and labeled organizers like CTMH organizers. Two stack on top of each other - no wasted space. As an aside, the “wasted” space can actually be a nice respite on the eye. Stuffed shelves and rooms just give me anxiety. 😅

I have the 9 cube shelf unit, from Menards. I don't have the cubes, just the shelf. But, it has solved a Lot of my storage issues. The smaller desktop clear Rubbermaid and sterlite drawer units fit in there just fine, with spaces to rest the eye. My heat press fits just right in one cubbies, I have a basket that holds stickers in another, small drawers with markers and other tools fit, and even used one cubbie for my nicer, favorite inspiration magazines and books. My ScanNCut fits nicely on top, along with my accessories in a nice metal tin. I don't need adjustable shelves. Everything already fits. As for a work table with drawers, that would not work in my room, which is also my quilting space, and guestroom. I picked a gatefold table that allows me to go from a 3ft x 5ft workspace to a 1ft x 3ft piece that does not get in the way. It's a little higher than standard desk height, and allows me to slide a couple 2/3 stools under when it's open and they can be tucked in a corner when family stays over. I have plenty of sterlite drawers in my closet. I made rotating organizer with a 3 in deep tin and jars already on hand. I bought a $10 kitchen rotating try, which fits the round tin perfectly. I don't overload it, because I like being able to reach and grab a tool when I need it. But it was all inexpensive, and it works great! Not reaally that large, either. It was in a cubby unit, till I needed it for my favorite magazines/books. It fits on my workspace just fine between my two gooseneck lamps.😊

I love my Kallax so much i have 4 8-cube ones. I use mostly the decorative photo boxes from Micheals stacked 2 high. Labeled. The boxes are small, so it prevents me from falling into clutter. Plus there is room next to the boxes to put a few books, notebooks, or bulky well used things. The Kallax make it easy to keep myself in check. If I don’t have a home for something, then something else has to go. I do have 3 of the cloth cubes that go with the shelves for extra cat beds, storage baggies and paper towels (i have to hide them from cats lol) and my PT stuff for my back.

We should also know the general way that we like to work. A book called “The Organized and Inspired Scrapbooker” helped me so much. Know these things: do you work best with storage that is open topped or closed/lidded? Do you work best with clear or opaque sides? There are combinations here that really do work. I found that I am a “chucker.” I don’t mind items in drawers but they have to be in open and bigger dividers. I don’t mind digging around in a space, because I like to just “chuck” things away when I need to. But storage out in the open has to be clear so I can see what is in it.

I love my Kallax units. I have one set up with the drawer inserts that I use for sorting and storing memorabilia by year and another 2 units that we turned into a paper island with a desk on top. My I invested in paper storage inserts for both units with pattern paper on one side and cardstock on another. I feel like I finally have paper storage peace in my scraproom.

I have to agree with the carousel holders. Most take up too much space on my desk to work for me. I have my peg board on the wall right by my desk for my scissors, Cricut tools and mats, things I need no matter what the craft is. I like to use boxes (I pretty them up of course). Shoe boxes, Amazon boxes, Grove boxes. Target used to have a beauty box program and they were small white sturdy boxes, I use them for my stamps. They also had some really nice white metal boxes in their dollar spot with "wood" lids and I use them to hold lots of things. I collected enamelware, the white with black trim, and use them for my sticker books.

I had neck surgery in June and lower back surgery in August. So I did a little bit of decluttering before the last one. While I was upstairs crafting, the “kindergarten boxes” from my bedroom (the totes are perfect for clothes) came out to the living room. It works for a temporary recovery period. However the last row of cubbyholes was wasted because I couldn’t get down there to get anything. People said to put my least used items in the bottom row. That is a great idea, but I was already limited on the supplies that I had upstairs, there was no least used items. Anyway, the comments have been a wealth of knowledge. As I go back to my downstairs craft room, I will be able to use these comments to get my room ready to accommodate limitations. Thank you for the videos.

After discovering how versatile they are the yearning for 'the cool stuff' disappeared. Completely satisfied with my room of bookcases lol

Great advice! I had a carousel unit that was taking up 1/4 of a shelf. And it was so deep that all of my quilting tools got lost. I just donated it to a thrift shop. Instead, I am using 2 favorite mugs that take up much less space.

Commenting as I watch: True, if the organizer takes up more space than the additional storage it provides, it's a spacewaster, not a spacesaver. 🙂 I have a family lazy susan. LUV IT! 😊 but, whimper, it's 18" in diameter. So, it takes over 20" of 60" of precious table space, but it holds lots of containered goodies. As a solution, I could get some stacked organizers (rotating or not) to increase the susan's storage capacity. I like having scissors, snippers, rulers, tracing/marking pencils, etc within arm's reach. Alternatively, I could just get several rotating organizers and place them along the side and back edge of the tables (I have in a U configuration).

I agree with the cubes not being best for craft. I got 1 stand with 16 slots that have served different purposes. Right now it's holding my stationery sets (in dollar tree cubes), small shipping boxes and photo props but it will go back to storing toys soon as it was indeed the best use of it. I do paper party supplies, jewelry, clay, stationery, miniatures wooden pieces, a bit of sewing and it gets harder to organize it all. All of my items are small pieces and i wasn't able to find any containers to make good use of the kallax. I do like the photo boxes you showed. I have 3 and they each hold different hobby pieces that I don't use often and sit on my shelf on top of each other.

I use peg boards to hold my quilting rulers, scissors, etc. I love having them out where I can see them and they are easy to access. My room is small so it makes use of the vertical space.

I just redid my craft room with Kallax and Billy bookcases. I find the trouble with both comes with stamps/dies/hot foil plates. It’s hard to find bins that fit. It’s either just too tall or too wide. I finally made it work and found inserts that work every inch of space possible. 😁

I have to disagree on the Kallax units. I use the drawer inserts, as mentioned, and they help utilize the space better. I label them for clarity. Sure the cost adds up, but so does buying multiple items that end up not working out. I love mine and have several for various types of crafts. Another wonderful item to use is a rolling kitchen island. They usually have lots of drawers and shelves. Are counter height so you can stand to craft or use a stool. I just bought one for my Stellaire embroidery machine. It’s a game changer. As for overrated craft items…buckets or hats tops my list. It’s are a pain to use if you’re opening and closing them often for projects. And buckets, well they’re just clunky, don’t hang right, and the bottom is narrower than the top making tools not fit right. ❤

While I don't have endless space, I'm not cramped in my storage and work space. I use multiple plastic drawer units under my giant work table. (It's standing height for cutting fabric, ironing, and for painting.) I have bought the storage drawers at different times but luckily the same ones have been available over time. The drawers give me dozens of places to store defined categories of medium to small things. I have additional (smaller) plastic drawer units filling a wooden bookcase with non-adjustable shelves. I love shallow drawers because they close keeping dust off but keep the stuff inside so easily accessible. I label the drawer fronts (usually with sticky notes) to help me quickly find the drawer I need. I also use that under-table space to store the LARGE boxes from two large sewing machines I own without which I would never be able to move the machines safely/without damage. I like my 12x12" cube storage for 12x12 paper and albums. I use shallow drawer inserts in several of the cubes to store smaller things. I like the cubes for bulky things that work well in a box that fits in a cube like my ribbon collection and a "file drawer" for paper scraps organized by colour. I also store bulky fabrics on cube shelves. I find the cubes to be wonderfully multi-purpose. I stack 13x13x3" project boxes on top of the cube unit as well. In general I like clear storage containers for everything because it helps with identifying the contents making it quicker to find what I'm after. I use a rolling cart to keep beside my longarm quilting machine to keep all the things rolling along with me as I quilt that I need to keep grabbing, using, then putting back. The machine is on a 12 foot wide frame and I move back and forth constantly and there's nothing in front of me to lay down my tools such as scissors, rulers, pins, oil, thread, garbage for cut-off thread ends, fabric markers, needles, machine manual, clamps for loading quilts onto the frame--and on and on. A rolling cart is perfect for all the things I need beside me. It saves me a lot of extra steps to the ends of the frame (to throw out threads for example). Extra steps limit my efficiency when I'm trying to get a quilt quilted. My workspace is quite utilitarian. It's pleasant and organized but it's not that cute or pretty. I'm also lucky to have a utility space for storage and a nicer work space where I spend most of my working time. I always think long and hard to define a specific storage problem then think through as many solutions as I can come up with before I spend any money. I could go on all day but that's probably enough thoughts on the topic for now! I love being organized. 😁

I know! Whoever thought slanted sides would be useful?? Our stuff doesnt fit, and it's wasting space, and therefore $$ Same goes for rounded corners on a storage box either our stuff doesnt fit, paper pad edges/corners get smashed, or we waste space. Straight sides is what I look for, also.

Happy for you that you have such a nice studio but that's not reality for most crafters. As i hear from others "you do you". Everything you mentioned can work nicely for lot of us.

Rather than a Kallax - I would recommend an IVAR or a Billy - depending on how deep you want it. I love my IVAR and the flexibility of it. As for Carousels, it really depends on the carousel and how its used... and whether we are craft hoarders. My dad (60 odd years ago) had an architects desk, with a carousel screwed on it, that contained the pens and markers that he used as well as the rubber putty, and so on for his work as a commercial artist. It was never overloaded because it only contained the things he used on a daily basis, but it coped really well with being tilted. I think that all tools can work if used appropriately, and chosen functionally rather than for decoration. If it isn't functional for your setup, then its just a space waster.

I have the 3 kallax units from before I downsized to a senior apartment, I now have them in my walk in closet and use them for clothes storage. I also have a generic cube unit under my desk (11”x11” cubes). It is not perfect for my needs as an artist, but I am making the best of it. I have 4 canvas cubes that house: office supplies, paint and similar items. I keep Iike things together and use make shift dividers to use vertical space such as cut down qt and 1/2 gal milk containers. 2 of the cubes are open, used for my wire wrapping supplies and the other for a revolving paint brush & marker caddy. None of these are perfect but they are functional. The top of the unit gives me enough space under the desk to store sketch books and paper. My desk is L shaped and in the corner of my bedroom, so it is important to me to keep it neat and organized. I continue to look for ways to improve the whole system on a small budget.

Haha, I think that sometimes we all overlook the simple solutions...we just get so used to seeing things a certain way, it doesn't occur to us to change it up.

I had a ribbon organizer that was wooden and had a few rows. It was difficult to see because the rods would fall and all the ribbons. I now have a small curtain rod on my pegboard and can see all my ribbon and can roll off what I need without having to remove it from the rod.

I like my Kallax for my Album and paper storage. I have a mix of Kallax, adjustable shelving and drawers. I find I need them all! I also have a small spinning caddy on my desk with my most used tools. I love it! 😂

Thankfully I never fell into the carousel trap, my desk is simply too small (25"x20")...which is why I think that any desktop storage for multiple things is a waste of space, I have cups for often used items and when I finish with those Items, I put the cup back up on the shelf to open space on my desk. (you know those cups people give you as gifts that you will never use for your coffee?) 1 cup has my Bible study pens n highlighters, another has pencils, another one for markers, etc.

Floss drops - I embroidery sitting on my couch. I do not have a room for my crafts/sewing. So, for me floss drops are useless. There's no place to usably hang them. I do not have a desk with a handy filing cabinet. Bobbins get a bad rap. Yes they do have kinks but that's only at the last 2 to 3 feet, and you can immediately see what color and how much you have via the see through box arranged by color family or color number. It works for me. :D

I've found that open storage is a dusting hassle (Ihave dust allergies). I keep things in closed storage. Like drawers and totes with lids. Open storage means I'm spending way to much time cleaning...I also like a tall work space so I can sit, or stand depending on my bodies needs. Drafting chairs work great!

I agree that there can be wasted space in the cube organizers. I have two Target brand cube storage systems that I love. I am primarily a scrapbooker so I use these mainly for album storage. (I knew that going in that was what I wanted them for.) I found some clear refrigerator bins at Target with pull out drawers and four fit in a cube perfectly and store my handmade cards. I’ve labeled sections and can easily flip through them to find what I need. Lazy Susan storage is definitely overrated.

I am still a big Kallax fan. What I do is subdivide my Kallax shelves. It's easy to make a cardboard template and drill holes to add some MDF shelves on pegs, or put in some of the tracks that CreateRoom sells for the Dreambox which accept 1/4 or thinner MDF sheets. One thing I don't buy anymore is ANYTHING meant to sit on a tabletop (like spinners and paint racks). I need to keep the tabletops as free as possible. I do have caddies that can move from a shelf to the table when I need them.

I fully understand the problem with Kallax for a paper crafter! As a sewist they’re useful but honestly not ideal, in my opinion. Two trends I think is overrated in the sewing community is open storage for fabrics (fabric and thread should not be stored exposed to sunlight) and peg boards (they take up a lot of wall space, don’t hold much, and easily gets messy). That said, I’m planning a new sewing room using both Kallax and a peg board. But I will use those items a bit different from how I see them used by a lot is sewists 😊

Flexibility in size is why I skipped the Kallax and bought Elfa drawer units. I waited until the annual sale at Container Store and my drawer units cost less than a similarly sized Kallax. You can by different sizes drawers to meet your needs.

I thought the clear plastic 12x12 containers were great for my small room to store everything but now it looks like a white blizzard came through my room and I can't even see over my desk. You need a map to get around in there so you don't get lost in the maze. I am in serious need of help organizing. I know exactly where everything is just can't reach it. I struggled with clear stamp storage for years until I finally decided to use 3 ring binders and 5x7 photo page protectors. Each binder has a theme so for example I have sports Fantasy Ocean Flowers Hobbies animals Travel travel vintage food holidays and so on and so forth. Because it's limited space once the binder is full. If I get a new set, then an old set has to go. The only problem I have with this system is when a stamp set could potentially be stored in multiple locations because of the stamps included.

I tend to just use generic categories like animals, seasons, alpha, etc. Would totally make sense to store dies the same way, but I store my paper by company.

The rolling craft cart doewn't work for me. I keep wanting to try it, I haven't bought one, but I don't think it would work for my space. I like the idea of the mobility but I think it might become a catch all and no longer organized. I would want to use it under my desk (Ikea table) but I would have to take the wheels off for it to fit underneath and defeats the point of the top bin.

The pen storage I created myself using the Glowforge laser cutter. The washi tape shelves are acrylic shelves meant to hold nail polish.

Clear acrylic shelves that were originally intended for nail polish.

Table without storage is fine if you have other things that are meant to be for storage I like raskog carts from ikea- I think open cube shelving is better for me than a bunch of drawers I have spots on the top for in progress things and even have a cart that I roll around the room depending on what I'm doing

I find lazy susans to be useful either NOT on the work surface directly but to store craft supplies elsewhere or for 'as needed' supplies that end up getting dropped onto the tabletop while working on a large surface. So, ironically if you have more space these are useful, but definitely aren't good for saving space.

@@ScrappyWife I was watching your craft room tour and I thought you mentioned it was from The Container Store, perhaps you meant something else. Is that something you make to sell? It's the clear acrylic containers. Looks like a whole row of them.

I love my kallax but I don’t use bins. Out of sight out of mind. Plus I hate digging through to find what I want. They make shelves that divide up the cubes. 12x12 supplies are great there. Also other organizing tools are made to maximize cube storage. I would prefer to have a combination of cubes and adjustable shelves. I would caution against the smaller cubes if you use 12x12 supplies. I dislike any storage designed to be on the desk. I want that space for working on my project.

I embroidery, and I for me, those floss bags are useless. The whole point of organization is so you don't have to rummage around for what you need. You may as well get a sandwich bag, write the floss number on the bag and toss it in a box. They even have a handy little white place for the Sharpie text, much cheaper. But you're still rummaging around in a box or bag for the right floss color and you've spent money on floss bags or sandwich bags.

Sounds good for your organization. But not workable at all for me. I have to use a table because it’s hard to find a desk to fit my mobility chair. I need what I use daily close at hand so I don’t have to move around so much. I’m in a mobility chair and on oxygen 24/7. If I have to move around I use two different tubing to keep from getting the tubing tangled in the wheels of my mobility chair. One day I will find someone to help me organize my stamp room

Yup, of course not all organization works (or doesn't work) for each person. Hopefully you are coming up with solutions that work for your needs!

Standing desk/table are terrible main working area. But I do think as a secondary space it probably a great idea.

I like standing when I create...but each of us have our own preferences for sure.

I disagree with the Kallux units. Maybe it doesn’t work for you, but for me, its just about perfect.

rotary organizers...YES...totally a waste and a pain in the lower parts. take up MORE room and are only good for a few things if deep enough.

I think that any of the "all in one" cabinets for craft storage are overrated! LOL.. my sewing hobby is so large that at this point it would never fit in something of that size.

“bins of darkness “ 😂😂😂 Have a small space hence small desk. Raskog cart to my left which holds pens, scissors, pencils. Limited washi tape collection hanging on metal hooks attached to the cart. All dies and stamps are in plastic pockets and store upright in heavy duty plastic bins from Winners. But still use the floor too much so I think I need to go vertical more in the storage.

Excellent tips & advise, I completely agree with you. UGH, to those tower - spin organizers. hahaha! they kept sucking me in also. I love to use Kallax ONLY for paper storage. I prefer bookcases with smaller containers as well as in my drawers too. I'm VERY fussy with pen - marker storage.... those marker holders can be DEATH to our dual tip marker collections..... storing them tilted or vertical as one tip end over time will dry out. Becareful $$$$ Can cost you a lot of marker product loss....

I am tempted every time I see one, but in the end, I know they don't really work well for me.

Rather than “overrated,” I might say they aren’t a good fit for you. Overrated is stating as fact that something isn’t good, that the quality isn’t there.

I disagree. Using the term “over-rated” is referring to an opinion. We consider things over-rated when our opinion of something or someone does not match the consensus or thoughts of others. All that to say, if some of these work for you, that is fantastic!

@@ScrappyWife yes, it’s your opinion. You don’t like these things. But overrated is a negative judgment of something. That’s different than it not fitting your organizing style. I don’t like colored pencil holders that have individual slots for each pencil. Having to put a pencil back in its designated spot or slip it under a band annoys me. But I don’t say or think that very popular type of holder are over rated. They work great for many people. Just because I gave mine away doesn’t make it overrated. Overrated would be if lots of people were buying them but the quality wasn’t there, that the bands broke after a few times, etc. Just my take - and the dictionary’s. 🙏

The Kallax unit is the best thing I’ve ever bought for my card making and scrapbooking. I’ve got everything labelled and organised.
