Overly Detailed Review of Rosa Gallery NEW Granulating Watercolors

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I really feel like a paint detective on this one! Watch for a surprising revelation! Today we are looking at the 8 new granulating watercolors from Rosa Gallery. rosa.ua/en/module-smartblog-d...
These paints were sent to me for review.
I have not found the new 10 colors of Rosa watercolors for sale in the US but I have purchased Rosa Gallery sets very affordably on Amazon: amzn.to/46sCxxM I
My original review of Rosa Gallery Watercolors: • Can Paint This Cheap B...
Pros:
Price
Easy to rewet
Good granulation in 4 colors
The gold and silver are nice mixers, not chalky at all in mixes
The super granulators mix well with other colors to make standard colors granulate
Cons:
The new colors are hard to find
Rosa watercolors seem to wear down a bit faster than other brands
4 of the new colors were pretty bland and flat looking
I think there is a misprint in the labels. I believe the paint uses PBk11, not Pbk7
Overall I am really happy with four of the colors: gold and silver. I recommend them for sure. the others are not my cup of tea but they are good paint. You really can't beat the value of Rosa watercolors.
BTW I did get a response from Rosa who says they use PBk7 and it is not magnetic because it contains no iron. This doesn't jive with my experiments but the paints that had PBk7 on their label definitely reacted with a magnet in my tests. Weird.

I looked up the paints and found this on their site: Gold. Warm saturated golden colour made of mica pigment, thin transparent particles covered with metal oxides with a high level of lightfastness. In a thick layer, the colour will give bright accents to your work, in a thin transparent it will give a fascinating feeling of depth. Gold mixed with other colours adds a shimmering shine to them. It looks extremely good over the dark tones of watercolours, or when used on dark paper. Ideal for the simulation of precious metals. Silver. The noble shade of silver will highlight your work. The rich or transparent silver tone will add depth to the moonlight, the clouds that glow at the sunset, and the glare of snow, ice, and water. Silver will add bright accents to shells, fish, and bird feathers. It simulates the colour of precious metals, and in mixtures with other colours will give them a flickering shine. It looks extremely good over the dark tones of watercolours, or when used on dark paper. Ideal for illustrators

You had me with the title! 😂 Wow, that was thorough! AND I never knew PBk11 was magnetic! Perhaps they have found a way to process PBk7 differently. Or it is - indeed - mislabelled, even though their customer relations would deny it. Mislabelling has even happened with Schmincke before (once)! - Thanks for the entertaining review, Lindsay! 😃🤩😘

Love your video, love the Rosa paints. I was tempted to add the Jade Green and the Golden Brown. But the Jade green seen only on the internet reminds me of the Undersea Green from DS or the Aquarius Green from Roman Szmal. The super pretty Golden Brown reminds on something from Schmincke's supergranulating range (Desert something or else). I have the single pigment colors so I could mix them. But of course the want monster wants the convenience mix and maybe maybe it's much prettier than I could mix it ❤

Those colours do go fast. I hear they don't use honey in the mix. Just very finely ground with gum arabic. They pick up real well and I often have too much pigment lifting out a pan. But Rosa whole pans are smaller, I guess so they can fit 12 whole pans in a small tin palette, that usually fits half pans better. A whole pan is usually 3ml, sometimes up to 3.2ml. Rosa's whole pans are 2.5ml.

Great review and excursion into the rabbit hole of pigment sleuthing 😂. It was fun to listen to your voice getting all excited trying to find out what was going on. I appreciate your curiosity and thoroughness. Yes to swatching the dot card. I bought their single pigment tubes, open stock so I can make my own mixes. So far I am really enjoying them. They rewet well, the colours are beautiful and they have a super price point here in 🇩🇪. I checked, and they dont have a single pigment black. They have Grape Black and Neutral Black. Both are mixes, starting with PBk7. They do t seem to carry any colour with PBK11 🤔. Thanks, Lindsay!

I bought my 14 pan set of Rosa when you did your first review and have since added 12 more colors a few at a time. Love these paints! The only color that I have been a bit disappointed with is their Quinacridone Gold. It just doesn’t have the punch I expect from a quin gold. I still have room in my tin for 2 more colors, I may have to pick from these new colors.

The green would be amazing with a Cobalt Teal, for a glacier-fed poolwith spring moss. I just saw some incredible photos of such a scene, and that color is exactly right. I have fun mixing brighter colors with these drab granulators, because they separate into really colorful combinations.

Looks like Swiper swiped the pbk7 so they used pbk11. Nice work Dora! That magnet test was so cool! I love my Rosa watercolors. I'm impatient and they pick up like my M Graham but are way cheaper😅. I like that there is hardly any drying shift. All my yellows from them are cadmium though. And their prices have gone up 10 bucks across the board on sets in tins or in just a box. Oh well. Thanks Lindsay 💜 I'm still working on that lake landscape by drips and drabs. I .ade a huge error and now have to figure out how to fix it. Should have stuck to Dr. Seuss trees.😉

The PBK7 (lamp Black) and PY42 (yellow ochre) should give a deep moody green hue. I use it in under painting alot...it has a history in Italian frescos for verdaccio . I agree that it could be another pigment.

I wonder why they are lying about the use of pbk 11? Pbk11 is a respected pigment. Is it just because they don’t want to admit they labeled the paints wrong? You have proof it’s pbk11! The paints look and act like pbk11 and you have proof they react to the magnet! It’s not trustworthy of them but it could also be an accidental miscommunication. These seem fun not sure how easy to find they will be. I personally prefer tubes so I can use fresh for large areas but primarily so I can use my tubes to make custom mixes in empty half and full pans. Still they are nice and like you said it’s colours and shades of grey so we have to determine who we support monetarily. They should correct the labels really. Still not as bad as Daniel Smith.

They day its pbk7 but for all I know their supplier could have sent them the wrong pigment so who knows? I hope it's not intentional. Also, I am not a geologist or scientist so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

This is such an interesting video! I'm not even halfway through yet. I have not tried Rosa paints before. The Jade Green does look like DS Undersea Green, except theirs isn't granulating, I don't think? And the Azure Green looks just like DS Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, which IS granulating (and which I paid something like $21 for on Blick! But it is such a beautiful color. I had a dot of it and fell in love...)

Now I can go back to watching my relaxation video while I'm dealing with pain in my upper back or shoulder (somewhere in there, LoL). No tensing drama shows for me today. Buy the granulating SINGLE pigments and mix your own supergranulators and separating colors with the transparent colors you already have. I've made colors way more beautiful than the ones sold by Schminke etc and the possibilities are endless, because not only can you mix everything together, you can use them alone too. Mars black, mars brown, potters pink, titanium buff, a good french ultramarine and burnt umber, cobalt turquoise/violet/pink/green, cerulean blue, etc. Check swatches and compare brands the same pigment can behave differently from different brands. I have about twenty granulators in a palette and they are three or four different brands. You can mix as you go out of pans, or if you find something you really like mix up a batch from tubes and let it dry in a pan for later. I especially like to do pale shades which none of the brands put out.. like cerulean and potters pink which is a beautiful dusky violet with little flecks of pink and blue.

@@waymire01 thank you so much for this detailed explanation on how to adapt granulating colors and then make them even more beautiful. My favourite Granulating black is from Aquarius, it is fabulous, you can mix it with any other colour and it is particularly good with blues And yellows and even rosy pinks, I did not try it with a magnet though. I do have a couple of magnetic colours from Kremer, one is a violet and the other a black and of course they are magnetic they are iron oxides. I wonder if Rosa were supplied with this pigment as is and were unaware of these properties, and it came named the way they say it is. One of the reason some quite expensive pigments are so affordable when made in Russia or Ukraine or Poland is because as countries they actually have the raw materials there and are major suppliers anyway.

Hey Lindsay, I need an idea..I had made some VERY cool granulating, separating mixes..especially 2, one with my PB33 + PO49…an absolutely stunning mossy green, that dries with a golden halo..and I mean a large halo (“wet on wet”)..and then the one I’ve talked about before..DS Amethyst + Volcano Yellow..(PY159) with beautiful separation, a bit of sparkle, purple/yellow/gray…two mixes I LOVE, but except for some abstract play, I can’t think of where I can use them. I love separating colors, the problem, or maybe advantage to some, is how unpredictable they are. But, if you have a suggestion on those 2..please let me know. Oh, I DID use my amethyst mix on a Chinese traditional painting (using my brush water technique) on xuan paper. It’s a painting of some bunnies around old pottery. It turned out ok..but had my tutor VERY confused 😂. The pottery was supposed to be a warm gray, made mainly with diluted ink. Mine, of course, had a bit of sparkle with spots of grayish purple and some yellow. 🤷🏼‍♀️. Copying master’s works you’re supposed to copy as close as possible..creatively exploring is supposedly reserved for more advanced artists. It’s ok, I liked it & sent it to my daughter who was born in the year of the rabbit (this year & 1987)

Thanks for the video. I am looking at buying some Rosa paints and have been watching a number of videos. I was going to get Roman Szmal as I had recently discovered them through KZread and liked the look of them. However the only place to get RS in UK is Jackson's and they are twice the price of Rosa. Some KZreadrs say that they like Rosa better than RS except RS earth colours are better. One of the things from your video that worries me is that you said that the Rosa paints don't spread well. What is your opinion to other reasonably priced paints?
