Overlanding New Mexico’s Back Country & Ghost Towns
Two Toyotas head out into gila national forest for a 3 day long overland adventure deep into New Mexico back country. After 140 miles of dirt, we wind up at the ghost town of Mogollon.

Great video. I just got back from a Greer AZ camping trip. The white mountains were something else. But I have to say the landscape from Eager and Alpine looking east to New Mexico at the high desert mesas were calling my name.

Thanks brother. That area north of the gila is definitely something to check out. I haven’t been yet but I’d hold off til the winter if you’re interested let me know!
Dude, totally agree on the SxS comment. Great video. Can’t wait to move back to NM this summer.

Thanks my man. I had to throw a little rant about the sxs after my last trip to the white mountains. Not all drivers are bad, but the majority are giving those with respect a bad name

Good to see you back out there my dude. At least you k ow where to escape the flocks of utv's. The so-cal desert I grew up riding in is so dangerously infested with inebriated utv drivers that I completely stopped going there. Had too many close calls on my dirt bike, deemed it not worth it. Anyway, awesome footage on this one, getting better every time....curious to see your possible new addition to your fleet.

Dude same here with a local desert. Had two incidences where I was forced off the road. One cut a buddy of mine off in a blind corner and totaled his brand new rig. Thanks for watching my man. Just picked up the new rig and will do a walk around video on it. Let’s just say it’s a lot in a tiny package 🤫
Another real good video. I went through this area last May & there sure is a lot more water in Swan Lake now.

My 54 Willy's had four bar linkage you had to pry out, knock around, hammer back into the slots to engage four wheel drive. Then the Warn Hub twist hub came out. Wimps. now anyone can go out. Am a Quad guy in the day. had to know how to ride, not just strap in and hang on. RZR's have a place, but yeah. Respect. Course, I grew riding Mules and ornery horses in Arizona desert lands.

Do you have an update for us as to how the lug studs sheared off?? It sure is a strange breakdown. Never heard of that happening before.
@Whitedogoverland

I’m not exactly sure what happened there. My guess is his aftermarket hubs he installed might have been over torqued and stretched the studs. I broke two studs last year but I’ve never seen all of them go at once
Great video, Cody! Thanks for sharing! I haven't been to that area in many years (I know, shame on me!). I TOTALLY agree with your views on the SxS issues. Waaayyy too many in AZ! A few folks are responsible, but the vast majority are not. All they do is feed the Eco Wackies to close more public land. Keep up the great work!

If we were somewhat like Utah where a class is required in order to get a ohv plate, it might keep the dummies off the road. I hate for more government but there are good deterrent solutions. Thanks for watching Mark!
Love the vids but easy on the judgement my friend. I’m an “overlander” but I’ve met many razor owners. Many are local folks who care deeply about the environment and taking care of trails. I think it’s like anything else, there are razor owners who haul their rigs from many miles away and want to tear shit up for a weekend. But there’s just as many if not more folks who respect the land and others who are trying to enjoy it. I would ask that instead of bad mouthing any particular group, promote responsible and respectful use of the land by all those who enjoy it.
@Whitedogoverland

Im not saying all rzr owners are shit heads but let me tell you, I’ve had more negative encounters with them then positive and that even includes friends of mine. I must add that I have met plenty of responsible owners. Arizona seems to have an abundance of poorly educated/experienced side by side owners. Too much vehicle at the hands of those who can walk in and swipe a card and walk out with the ultimate offroad vehicle. I would never ask for more government involvement in anything but Arizona needs to get on board with utahs hov license. Might keep some of the inexperienced from buying these or educate them.
Another great video, I'll be sure to go to that ghost town when i head out there to hunt this fall. I had the same thing happen to my front wheel years ago, a few hours after i left a tire store. I'm guessing they impacted the hell out of those lugs

Hi there great video! As someone who lives in Payson we do see a lot of people from the valley… some not all do leave a lot of trash in their campsites, and as you know, being from Arizona fires are a big thing they’ll leave their smoldering campfires when they go home. Hate it when we find that kind of stuff. Lol speaking on side-by-side we have both it and 4x4s sadly, I agree, side-by-side eiders will go anywhere or do anything in the middle of the day in the middle of the night way faster than they should on trails or or off having said that that’s not all of them, but there is a lot of them. Same with 4x4 though. Stay on numbered trails don’t be one of the idiots tearing up the forest the or desert if you do and you’re leaving your trash, or making your own trail !you’re giving them a reason to close it all down and believe me they’re looking for any reason they can find to do just that. Be a responsible user I am in my 60s and want to see my grandkids able to enjoy the outdoors as I have, and still do .
@Whitedogoverland

Simply said, i agree with everything you said in this comment! the trend has become over bearing for our outdoors and too few people understand how to respect it.
Awesome Sir. Thanks for posting. I just got back from Silver City (7/12) and did some camping, hiking, fishing, did a couple trials/roads in the Gila. Signal Peak and Meadows Creek. Beautiful country. Might have just missed you. Was planning Northstar and Chloride, Mogollon some time in future. This helps. Seems Fall n Spring are best temps. Monsoon season is just starting. FYI: Fishing w/o NM lic ticket is $146 then you get a lic for 1 year in the mail. (Walmart in Silver has them.) Don't ask me how I know. LOL

I would definitely check out chloride road in the fall before snow hits. Huge bummer they closed the eastern canyon but eventually it’ll reopen from what I hear. The gila is one of the most under appreciated areas out here in the south west, which is okay with me!
Let’s talk about why the lugs may have sheared off? Also about the pro eagle Jack now working?
@Ontheroamagain

I’ve heard that Toyota wheels/lugs can’t be tightened too tight or this will happen could be with any vehicle that is.. also, if you get aftermarket wheels, you should really make sure they’re hub centric not sure if this was the case.
@Whitedogoverland

I think he bought aftermarket hubs and stretched the studs. That would be my guess. It happened to me years ago before I knew what a torque wrench was lol
You should try and camp at the Lincoln National Forest, in New Mexico. Much higher in elevation.

Is that a flip pac topper? I wish they still made those. I don't want or need a 30K four wheel camper. Was he running wheel spacers on the broken down Tacoma?
@Whitedogoverland
11 ай бұрын
I think he got aftermarket hubs and stretched the studs. Would be my guess. The topper is a flappac. Picked it up for 3500 last year and it’s great. The new canopy campers are just way too expensive but you can find these vintage ones for cheap on Facebook
Not all sxs are that way. I have a sxs and a jeep. But they are not all that bad. I enjoy driving both out into the desert for fun. I do agree that a lot of them are speed freaks. But I don’t hate on them for that. They’ll grow up and learn to enjoy the view normally. There are people everywhere. We go out in the desert of New Mexico and all the trails have people out enjoying their time in the desert also.
Howdy, these are some great spots, iam about to go visit snow lake soon, but I would really like to know where that spot at 16:17 is if you dont mind sharing it please. thank you
Couldn't agree more with your opinion of SxS's. They have ruined the serenity of remote places in AZ. New sub here from Tucson.

Hey, I am planning a road trip to New Mexico at the end of February for 3 weeks. I have a tundra pulling a small off road hiker trailer. I'm looking for some dirt roads and good camping. But not anything too technical. Do you have any advice on good areas to check out. I'm trying to put a route together. We also have two dogs. Thanks. I'm enjoying your videos.

Keep in mind that 75% of the roads here in New Mexico are unpaved. The BDR map is a good one to start with for ideas. Whatever the adventure motorbikes do is normally a good scenic route that most 4X4s can do.

The way you feel about the side by side people is how us original car camping people feel about you overlanders with your overpriced, over equipped "rigs"... Anyway, not hating at all, loved the video.
@Whitedogoverland

Totally agree with that. I started out in a 95 explorer camping out of the back. Always wanted a nicer set up but kept it simple. Getting ready to purchase a “car camping” rig to take it back a few steps and get back to where I was ten years ago. 10/10 times this tundra is way more than I need, the whole rig was built on a budget off Facebook marketplace but still over kill.

Why is it that blanket statements are made about sxs's that they cause trouble everywhere? We have had our various Jeeps for over 25 years along with 4-wheelers and a sxs. We also lived in Ouray, CO for over 30 years but moved away last year because it became so overrun by all the tourists. We have always respected our fragile mountains and respected others out riding. I have seen a much abuse by Toyota's, Jeep's and dirt bikes (and Subarus!) as I have sxs's. If you were to be honest... what percentage of sxs's that you encounter are causing trouble or being disrespectful?? We lived in one of the most traveled backcountry areas in the US. We've seen it all. And the percentage of sxs troublemakers is probably 10-15% max. Your blanket statements put myself, my family and the local 4-wheeler clubs, to name a few, in a bad light and frankly, I'm tired of hearing it. I take offense to it. I won't be watching or subscribing.

No problem I wouldn’t sub either if I was pro side by side. I live in a town that has been over run by them. Clubs come out on runs of 20+, drinking, being obnoxious, almost every night of the week. I’ve had multiple friends run off the road by them, flipped and totaled vehicles, I’ve been cut off by them, they don’t know the right of way, I’ve seen them nearly take out hikers, I’ve seen them drive up single track (hiking trails) to shoot in tall grass. The majority I run into do not know anything about respect for our offroad hobby, they didn’t take the time to learn. It’s not all bad, not placing all of you in one bucket but where I’m from, most are terrible. I’m proud to be anti side by side and want to take my deserts back from anyone who disrespected them, that goes for trucks and motorcycles too. Just so happens most incidents are caused by the rzr crowd.
