What are the difficulties in re-gearing yourself?
@youpers
3 жыл бұрын
It’s not that bad, just have to set backlash and gear mesh. I learned before KZread was available but now with KZread and all the tech articles it seems there’s a video or article for every application. It’s amazing to me that there are people out there that take the time to create guides to do things yourself. If you’re interested in trying it, I’d also suggest looking on ih8mud. There are a lot of tech articles there too.

Love the fact that this is LS swapped. Would love to do this on my truck as well.
Extremely sweet FJ!
Just great. Yet another thing I didn’t know existed 20 minutes ago, but now I can’t live without.
What a great rig. And part of the family too!
Anyone that thumbs down this I just don’t know what to say this is a Awsome rig
That's an absolutely awesome build.
This is my dream rig! Awesome work
I drove one from Denver to the south rim grand canyon in a white out blizzard back in 1991 - love land cruisers
One of the best rigs I have seen. Remember someone had one of this when I was much younger...
NOW THAT IS A COOL RIG! I Love that he's doing the work himself, and it's NOT a Wrangler driving around at GVWR before packing for a trip! Bitchin FJ! Thanks Michael.

Considering the classic this vehicle is and will forever be an icon, yes, an investment well made! I paid $3,500 for my FJ40 back in 1990, sunk another $6,500 into it and it is still working hard some 30 years later and a total of 560k miles on the chassis.
Very nice truck Anthony, just replace the painted noise dampener/ heat shield on bottom of the hood, and it will be fantastic!!
Great looking ride! OB 6811
Bit of feedback.. keep the walk arounds coming! Good views and very informative. Also.. any chance of getting more "non conventional" overlanders, e.g. Rams, big chevs, Subarus etc. It may sound odd but Subaru deserves more credit and as far as big trucks go it's great seeing what they're capable of instead of the usual big rims rubberband tyres and this is all coming from an Aussie! 🇺🇸🇦🇺
Nice clean rig. Nice to see some of our items from Australia on it haha ;) I like the idea of the front camera, that is something I could do with my 80 series, I already have a rear camera which is great for parking but also to see how close the car is behind me in traffic (some of these suckers are like inches from my bumper in heavy traffic and I'm like "get off my ass ffs!!" Great to see an old girl done up and running.

Thanks man! Australian Cruisers are the high water mark in my opinion. The camera helps when I can’t get my wife to get out and spot me on the rocks.
Would love more details about the engine and to hear it startup and idle.

Very near stock 6.0. It’s smog legal so don’t want to jeopardize that. Otherwise installing a CA legal turbo kit soon, don’t know which though.
Can u tell me more about moving the shackles to the back, how it helped with the drive. The steering issue has been something we want sorted. Here in Australia and we are struggling to figure out how to fix it and if it can be fixed.
My understanding is that a 80 rear axle is 5" inches wider then the stock 60 front axle. Did you narrow the 80 axle ? widen the front axle ? run spacers on the front ? I do understand why you put the 80 axle on the rear. Full float, Disc brakes, and the all important parking brake. an amazing rig. Thank you for sharing.
@youpers
3 жыл бұрын
It’s only 3” wider so I have 1.5” spacers in front. Otherwise yes all the benefits are true, it’s a very good upgrade.
I'd like to see it sway in an evasive maneuver!
Could you clarify the overdrive & adapter you used?? about to swap an LS into my FJ62 and did not know this was an option, but it sounds perfect

Probably used an NV3500 or NV4500 from a chevy full size truck. They make adapters to use the Toyota T-Case with those trans.

Firstly, Sweet 60. I've gone another route with mine but see improvements you have tackled I am interested in. @Anthony, any chance you could elaborate more on the PSC steering upgrade? Would really like to have a conversation with you about it.
@youpers
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the complements. The PSC hydro assist is great, you just need a ported steering box. Several companies out there offer it as a service but its honestly not too hard to do yourself if your so inclined. Then fabricate a bracket off the axle and clamp the other end to the tie rod. I used their 1.5x6 shaft. Hope that helps.
Great video! Everytime I see one of these older rigs I fall in love, until I get into a newer rig with all the creature comforts were all used to... How do you balance creature comforts and daily driving vs off road rig?

I drove my FJ40 as a daily driver until I sat in an air conditioned, a HD sound system equipped 4Runner.... parked the 40 and only wheeled. I miss driving it though that is why it is getting a make over so I can add some of those creature comforts to and aging piece of off-road art.
What trans? do you have extra overdrive then from advance adapters?. And stock toyota transfer case.
Love this community and I hope one day to join. I wish you guys would feature a female overlander and her rig as inspiration. I look at this videos and see most people(men) doing a lot of the work themselves. I have the same mentality of doing it myself but I dont have any knowledge of car stuff and I would seriously be struggling.

I know I fit the stereotype, but honestly I just bought tools when I could afford them and taught myself in my parents driveway (when they were at work) on my first car when it blew a head gasket. Took me a couple tries but figured it out eventually. There's a huge support group in Overland Bound that would love to help you on your way to being mechanically capable. Just have to be willing to make mistakes and do things over again when you mess it up, at least thats how I leaned.
I was curious about your rear tire carrier as I'd like to get one for my 1986 fj60 (2f w 5sp). Can you share where you got it. Thank you. Tim
Awsome rig!! I have an “83”, doing some of the same stuff. Can you explain a little better your motor back set up? Chevy motor/bell housing, and then I was a little confused after that?
@youpers
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the appreciation! The setup is: LS based small block, flywheel with correct thickness for use with a early model SBC bellhousing and clutch, cause the AA ranger overdrive is meant for a pre LS SBC. After the ranger its just toyota H42 trans, and t case, also added 4:1 t case gears, they helped the crawl speed a lot! Hope that helps.

Do you mind sharing some info on the solar panel system? I think that's a great mod and would love to put it on my FJ60.

Its a 100W panel with a controller in the center console that connects to the start battery via backfeeding a fused circuit on the main fuse panel, that way I can isolate it for long term storage.
