So basically xfinity should have designed this better. The previous router had grated sides and we never had an issue. This new router has been driving us CRAZY because the speeds are trash (10mbps or less). It wasn't until one of us touched it that we thought it may be overheating. We're going to try the fan. Thank you so much for posting this!

Just so you know. Call Xfinity first. They are upgrading ppl who have a certain speed of service to the new XB7 wifi 6 model. The 7 is white while the 6 is grey (ours). They told me its on backorder until Nov in my area but maybe you have better luck. The upgrade is free. :) but the fan does let me have a more stable no more drop out connection.

@@DisplayReality yes, that's the one we have. Unfortunately, same issue. The previous model we had (the thin, tall black one) had open grating on each side. Never got too hot and ran our devices with no problem. For reference, i have a 4K samsung tv, 2 laptops, 2 xbox 1S, and an Alexa Dot. We rarely use the wifi fo our phones because we have unlimited internet.

Yea there's a problem then. Hopefully they fix and even if they do these fans will make it cooler for a more stable speed. With these fans since they move more air faster... make sure to clean the bottom intake area as dust will accumulate faster. I dust mine once a wk for it to stay always clear and open. And the actual fan about once a month.

Now I see your post which has more detail along my issue. And I found your added fan on Amazon, the exact you have. I was given this about 5 days ago as a replacement. The fan has never shut off and it's a little warm so you post is appreciated. So the fan is not blowing on the hardware, it's sucking air and the added fan is blowing away from the router? Got it! I took out the 50 x 20mm fan and slapped a 120mm on the bottom because the higher pitch of the small fan was driving me nuts. Going to see if I can 3d print something to hold it in place and funnel the air more efficiently. Right now it's all just stacked on top of each other.

I used cable ties to secure a case fan to the top grill in back. I did this because I noted there was no other method of cooling but convection. Cheap insurance. And I don't have to worry about Xfinity tweaking their system and making my router obsolete (like my Netgear 6300).

The successors, XB7 and XB8 the ventilation is at the bottom surface, and on the top surface of the unit with a fan near the base sucking air in when necessary. The XB8 uses about 16-18 watts continuously and fan only comes on if house gets near 80F so it can handle pretty high temperatures. It is currently 65F in the house and pointing a temperature gun pointing down at the top it reads up to 119F it's always like this 24/7 reliable. No big deal

The modem/routers need better cooling methods and should also include air filters. Change or clean air filters and these will last a lifetime or at least until there’s a major new technology. Heat hurts electronics. Dust causes slows down electronics heat removal.

Cox Routers have the same issue, I build computers so I know how crucial it is for electrical components to be cooled, Got 2 old PC fans that were laying around, Made a custom stand with one of the fans on the bottom, and then put a fan at the intake side aswell, It wont ever exceed 63 - 70f now, These types of Routers/Modems have terrible cooling, And also can be a result of internet outages in your home when using the internet for a extended period of time, For those wanting to DIY a cooling setup, It is very easy, Just get a couple 80mm - 120mm fans off of amazon that Can be powered by USB, then either tape them onto the modem or use some Double-Sided Adhesive Tape and mount them to the router top and bottom, Then to make a stand so it has clearance Get a few rubber stops and put them on the bottom of the fan and screw a long self tapper into the rubber stop, And your all done! *Side Note* It does sound like a lot of work but it is well worth it and it helps with improving internet speed aswell since the device doesn't have to work so hard.

I have this router and it was decent for the first week or so, but then it just started dropping to crazy low speeds, i took speed test and a one point it had reached 0.02 down and 0.04 up. When I restart the device and let it cool down it usually is okay for around 5 mins but then the router heats up and the speeds tank. I’m hoping this works for me because i’m not sure what else would be causing these speeds

I had my Xb6 replaced with a xb7 plus I still use my fan for no throttling. But I do clean it out regularly with the keyboard vac. What kind of noise? @@DisplayReality I just got this modem yesterday. The noise sounds like a small laptop. It's a constant fan noise, it throttles up and down every now and then, just like a laptop. I don't think I've ever had a modem/router combo with a fan inside of it until I switched to comcast. The guy assured me there were no gotcha's so I signed a one year contract, then I get this polished turd of a gateway. This is a design issue. I'm surprised yours has no noise. My house is virtually silent at bedtime aside of the constant drone that is my gateway.

Well, call me mouthy. This is the 2nd posts in several hours. I hope you are still monitoring them. I am going to take your advice and buy the fan from Amazon. Must be the same one. Doesn't the pull on the built in fan from the power of the adapted fan do damage or race the little fan beyond limits? Hello? I hope you are here. lol

Low or med would be fine. But on high does seem to lower the temp alot more I have found. I still use my xb7 with this fan and on Hugh for over 1yr and no issues...

My internet goes out at random I think it's because the modem overheats is that the reason?

Could be. If it gets too hot it will slow down. Make sure bottom grill is always clean. The fan would help. Good thing its pretty cheap..

This is the problem. I have this same model and typically when I start seeing issues with connectivity it is due to the unit being extremely hot. Honestly, this video seems to be showing one that has a fan failure as my unit has enough suction to hold up a piece of paper, but the problem is the vents can very easily get clogged due to dust particles. I have birds, so dander is typically the culprit meaning I have to clean the vents on the regular or...well it overheats and will do a restart causing net to drop. When it works, it works well...but the overall design of this modems cooling system is flawed meaning it is prone to getting clogged, having failures, or in some cases even bricking the unit itself. Anything that can't easily cool itself passively or with its own internal cooling within a reasonable temp range really shouldn't be considered a mass customer product =/ A shame that to keep it well within operation one has to attach a better fan. If I owned it instead of leased it, i would go as far as to add better airflow to the case itself....but alas.

We had a cable problem with our telephone pole’s recently so there was a dude to come out here and work on the lines because our wifi was out. Keep in mind we had amazing wifi before this happened we run 1 ps5, 2 ps4s, 5+ phones all smooth as butter plus anyone that comes over no problems we loved our wifi. As they were fixing the lines they gave us a smaller wifi box and stole our good wifi box from us claiming its “better”, “smaller is better” is what the dude said. But its the same one in the video. Let me just say ITS COMPLETE DOG SHIT i cant play any thing without nonstop lag. I want my old modem back but they took it 😢

I experienced this issue eith Xfinity just as CenturyLink knocked on the door to offer me 1gb fiber up and dowb for a lower monthly cost. The issue is Comcast who has been slowing down the proliferation of broadband for twenty plus years. Xfinity modems are cheap junk. Coax internet is antiquated trash. Comcast does not want to invest in network upgrades while bleeding customers out at a premium for old world performance. Comcast would rather invest money in lobbying so that they can be the gatekeeper and monopoly. Comcast is a greedy reason why communities the United States are slower in innovation, business growth and education overall in the world. Therefore, I'm happy to be free of Comcast

Bro just take the bottom vent off and lay it on its belly where the large vent is facing up. Just dust it out once in a while or put a less restrictive vent/dust screen on the bottom

@@DisplayReality i just got one too, took the bottom and top off and the fan doesn’t even kick on anymore, it just passively cools. It has a pretty decent heatsink on it.

It should not be hot in the first place. This is a router, not the fricking computer !!! What are they even running there that they need so much power? Do they decrypt and analyze all our traffic by using routers and out electricity we pay for?

    1) that is not a heat gun. That is a infrared thermometer. (heat guns produce heat, not detect it) 2) fantastic vid. 3) comcast sucks. Xfinity sucks. Yes if its the only thin in the area its what you deal wtih , but honestly its garbage for the price. And then add on the data caps, paying extra to remove them, just nonsense ways to bleed your money.
