wasn't there an interview with the people behind the movie and they said they wanted the cars to open their doors, but said no because their brains would be there? that's part of the reason as to why this video kinda disturbs me. its still good tho

I know I'm 14 years too late, but this looks so good that it could actually pass as a scene in the film somewhere.

honestly no it couldn't, even if we were only considering the difference in the crispness of the movements (i can tell exactly what the keyframes are in this animation, but i couldn't do it with the real movie). but it is really darn good nonetheless

This looks like it could be old development footage for an early version of Cars. Well done, especially for 2007! Blender was also not as developed then as it is now, which I think makes this more impressive.

I love this. It fits the art style and movement of the Cars series so much.

Cars have been shown to be able to move their suspension like arms/legs, hell, Lightning even “hopped” to try to gain a little extra speed at the end of the first race when his tires blew. There’s no reason this guy hasn’t just walked his way back to civilization yet

This is amazing. I thought it was an early Cars test or something.

yeah that took some thinking to figure out, but basically i had the two iris textures each follow an object (an empty), and just animated the empties. the eyebrows were just shape keys that i manually animated to follow the position of the irises. thanks for the critique! :)

Woah, TIL that, back then, Ambient Occlusion took forever to render for a short video and now every single video game renders it in real time. I love finding differences in advances like this

you're right, shape keys are what i used. for the eyes to move on a flat surface like that, i had to set two textures (both the eye texture) for the windshield and have their location set to an object (an empty), and then when i animated the empties, the eye texture followed suit.

What I really like about this animation is how it looks more like a test animation for cars rather than something in the film. It has the grungy appeal of 90's computer animation that just isn't captured with everything looking so polished today.
