Overcoming Your Childhood Pain | Dr. Laura

Do you feel stuck in the pain of early abuse? It may be difficult, but change is possible.
Dr. Laura speaks about the childhood wounds we carry into our adulthood that prevent us from trusting others, being vulnerable, and therefore accepting mistreatment in life. Change starts with believing that it doesn't have to be this way. Read the blog, You Don’t Have to Keep Living Your Childhood Pain www.drlaura.com/blog-you-dont...

You just explained why I’m more disgusted with my father for accommodating my cruel mother. Trusting my husband and being vulnerable is so hard but I trust what your saying and the goal is to do the right thing ❤ thank you!!

So much good fruit in this segment. Both my wife and I were (maybe still are) damaged goods. But I happened to be the one who told myself "It doesn't have to be this way" early in our marriage (just passed 25 years). My wife was who grew up with the kinds of parents described in this segment; one narcissistic/controlling/over bearing but "successful" and the other the Enabler. And yes, she had to learn certain negative beliefs in order to survive in that household. I learned very early on that in order for her to change those survival beliefs, that I was going to need her to have more faith and trust in me. And I had to be the one (with effective communication of course) to show her what being vulnerable looked like and for me to have faith and trust in her that she wouldn't use it against me (because it was used against her in her childhood). It took time and definitely took practice, but going through the motions and having deep conversations about it all (what her unhealthy beliefs and habits and reactions were and what we eventually wanted them to be) allowed us to understand each other and grow as a couple immensely. I had to let her know that I was going to take a leap of faith on her (allow myself to be vulnerable) and that I was asking her to do the same. It did take her to witness me protecting her from her father in our first year of marriage, to gain that level of faith in me, that I was committed to her and her happiness (he was verbally abusing her during a visit), but my standing up to him came natural because that's my job anyway (literally told him I don't care that she's his daughter, she's my wife now and I'm not going to let him or anyone hurt or abuse her. And if he had a problem with that, me protecting his daughter, then he doesn't need to be in our lives). Thanks Dr. Laura for what you do. And good luck everyone else.

And FORGIVE! It will set you free, I promise. Forgiveness isn’t for them, it’s for you! I did it and I have a very good life. ❤ Of course this made me tear up - both of my parents were unbelievably mean and abusive. I was angry and bitter for years. And I still have protective mechanisms in place, but I turned them to my benefit. I am a journalist and I am not vulnerable, which makes me a good journalist. I am also a grandma 😊

My mom passed when I was 8. My dad didn't know how to grieve. I have messed up lots of good healthy relationships because I always felt like I wasn't worthy of them. My current relationship I am to be vulnerable, ask for what I need example hugs etc. I have been very blessed to find a man who treats me so well and is helped me through my vulnerability. I heard about this on your show so I had to listen right away. What a great job they did on this video

Thank you Dr. Laura for these videos and the themes in it. Heard only 2 years ago about the theme: epigenetic between generations. Very interesting, I am sure you are familiar. What do you think about it? Greetings from a German listener who heard years ago your radio show and could not get enough. The reception for this channel was only possible in one spare room in our extra tiny apartment, good memories, I was a young mother back then. Greetings from Birgit

If time healed there would not be such a thing as childhood trauma. Look within and seriously ask yourself what attracted you to whatever it was in the first place. All healing comes from within by looking at yourself shamelessly, constructively and honestly.
