Overcoming setbacks with Gee Atherton | Just Ride S2E8

Gee Atherton is one of the most decorated, all-round downhill riders the sport of mountain biking has ever seen. He’s also one of the most committed, hardest bike riders that cycling has ever seen. Full stop.
His list of achievements goes on, and on, and on - two-time world champion, eight-time UCI World Cup winner, Red Bull Hardline winner, six-tie national champion… - but his list of difficult moments and brutal crashes is also a long one. Sadly, it goes with the territory of pushing the boundaries.
Here on Just Ride, for the first time, Gee speaks in detail to Rob and Eliot about his awful crash while filming his Ridgeline series in North Wales in 2021. Gee was airlifted to hospital and had to fight for his life.
Yet he returned to the saddle, as he has done numerous times before. His love of the bike shines through and over an hour the guys recapped a magical career while discussing that fateful day shooting Ridgeline, his subsequent return and crash at Red Bull Rampage in 2023, and what’s next for one of the greatest of all time.
Filmed in front of a live studio audience in Salzburg, this is a fascinating chat with a mountain bike icon.
Are you planning to catch Red Bull Hardline this weekend? You can watch it live on Red Bull TV and if you do, drop us a line - we want to hear from you! Hit us up at podcast@redbull.com.

I’ve watched the ridge line crash twice and probably won’t watch it again, it’s genuinely horrible seeing his body roll down that rock face like he’s made of jelly, he’s very lucky to be alive. A true legend of the sport, a model professional and one of the most committed balls to the wall racers ever

Because I don't live my life online I had no idea how many and how bad Gee's injuries had been. I just kinda assumed he'd faded away from racing as the results stopped coming as the new guard crept in. But jesus wept! The guy is a bloody hero, nutter, insane talent, mind bendingly mentally strong and I can't believe he's still alive, let alone riding, let alone riding gnarly lines that put world cup tracks to shame! Big salute sir, you are one of those of us who we'd all be happy to present as our best, to the rest of the world. Long may your life continue.

What I love about Gee ( and Dan), is that they are pure riders. Just like Rat Boy, and the hardcore frenchies, Remy and Barelli, and various others. It’s people who love riding a bike, and riding a bike anywhere. I raced from 1983-2016, and I still just love riding bikes. ( even if am now a grandpa) … Gee and Dan carry that very simple, pure love of riding bikes! It doesn’t matter what level you are; riding bikes feels like flying. 😎👍

I'd love to sit down with Gee and have a conversation about how you mentally push past a big crash on a crazy feature. Having had a similar (But still not as bad as his) injuries. Hitting a tree on the exit of a huge (In my eyes) gap, I still struggle with the mental game years later. I had a ruptured spleen, punctured lung, torn muscles (oddly didn't break a bone!) a blood transfusion in the wood, a chest drain fitted as I was internally bleeding and then air lifted out (Also via the coast guard) as I was also touch an go at. I'm not a pro rider, I'm just an amateur enthusiast but oddly I don't recall ever thinking I'm not riding again but I also haven't quite got over it. I was back out on the bike within 3 months and by the end of the year was riding faster than I had before but couldn't hit gaps or big jumps. I'm still struggling to really find the confidence to hit stuff half the size of what caused my accident. I could relate so much to the stuff he was saying about feeling more for the people who had to deal with seeing the crash and then the repercussions of my mistake. I think this is something that still lingers in my mind.

But i'm pretty sure you guys are allready working on it. But yea.. It's mindblowing. And way too dangerous imo. This sport doesn't need this wow factor of super danger. Why put the poorly payed athletes at more risk than they allready are? Dunno. Feels unnecesary. Not everyone is ok with ragdoling down a cliff Gee.
