I truly admire the way you often cite how you acknowledge parts of your upbringing that could have been better and then consciously seek to do different with your own kids (and kudos for your husband too joining those efforts.). It's much easier to keep chains going, patterns going. It's work to break/change them. Your kids will not know to thank you here as they have known only that better environment, but we thinking observant adults can appreciate and acknowledge that work and thoughtfulness. 👏👏👏

I got quietly sick in 11th grade(the kind you don't get diagnosed until a Dr looks at your medical history and questions a 2 week swelling episode that rang no bells at the time) , went from tracking Val Victorian to graduating on work credits from factory work. Ended up fully disables around 8 years later after a string of bad relationships, failed jobs and 'accidental' pregnancies' (a lovely perfect storm of mental health and hormone imbalance nullifying all hormonal birth control) even 24 years after the fact I don't think my mother has ever forgiven me, or properly mourned the loss of her able bodied over achiever child....

My disease to please is rooted in a childhood message that love is a transaction of service, money, attention. I am valuable because I provide care, money, or emotional support to others. At 53, I am not sure I can unwire my initial reaction to fix others (or situations) at the detriment of my own financial, mental and physical health. It takes a little for me to feel the pain to recalibrate my actions.

Completely aside from the rest of your point (which YES I hear you), I am completely delighted that someone aside from me says “sportsball” 😆.

The only sport I loved was roller derby. Even though I played basketball and my husband played college football, everything else besides derby is "sportsball" to me.
