    Thanks, Matty. This was very informative. I mostly shoot intertidal wildlife and I've been thinking of experimenting with a dome. I'll keep these in mind.

    Hey Shaunak, no worries I'm glad it helped you. The intertidal area is my favourite place to shoot, so many possibilities on any given day. I'll be doing more in depth videos about dome port sizes soon.

    Great video, very informative! That dome is dope!!! Im shooting in Cenotes in mexico, so its very dark waters, hi contrast with the rays of light, making it a big challenge as for settings of the camera, as there is not to much light for the picture, guess i need to go to a f8 or more, i dont use strobes, so my shutter speed is sometimes very low, and i must go up to 3200 ISO, im trying hard, but its never a easy shot! Thanks for the info! Great work!

    Really interesting Matty, I've just bought an 8 inch port for over/under shots and I'm going to be using the sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. Thanks heaps for the tips!

    Thank you for such a thorough and informative presentation. What do you use to prevent water droplets from forming on acrylic dome ports?

    Great video thanks. I am relatively new to the over under photography. Just got my first 6 inch dome, Canon 10-18 lense, Canon 250D Eos camera. Any books or other places you recommend so I can learn more? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Kudos from Maritimes, Canada

    Great vid matty, Ive been inspired to do over/unders by you for a while on reefs at home in the uk and abroad. I dont have strobes though, I used a aquatech housing with 8inch dome and tokina fish eye with my my 5dmk4 and a 600exrt flash which I use to expose the reef below. Would love to know your thoughts on using flashes rather than strobes if you have used them in past?

    Hey Matthew, thanks, I'm glad you got something from it. Strobes are basically underwater flashes, they work in exactly the same way. If you're using a conventional flash in a housing underwater you will get a very similar outcome. A good tip though is to use some kind of diffuser on your flash to spread and soften the light.

    Thanks Matty! Love your work. Just got myself a Sony a6500 to play around with. Thinking about what housing and port I should go for if you have any tips!

    Hey Lilly, thank you! Your housing choice really depends on what and where you are going to shoot. If you're in the surf and mostly surface work then you should go for a lightweight splash housing such as an Aquatech or Salty Surf Housings model. If you scuba dive then you'll need something a little more robust and designed to take the pressure, such as an Aquatica Digital housing. The best advice though is don't be tempted to go for the really cheap plastic bag options, get the best that you can afford. As for ports, when it comes to split shots, generally, bigger ports are better, go for something in the 8-10" (200-230mm) size range. Cheers

    1 More tips please!!! I'm using Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk II with their OEM Housing. But I just bought the E-M1 Mk II. 1 more tips. How do you prime or coat the dome when shooting over under shot so that the water won't stick on the dome. At times, there are water that stick on the over side and cause distortion to the over part of the image. Thanks

    Very nice video, thanks Matty! For over/underwater photography, I'm using generally the single AF or AF with expansion (cross) what about you? Which one do you think is the best?

  • @mattysmithphoto8002

    @mattysmithphoto8002

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey, Thanks! I generally use the single point AF, but if the contrast or light levels are low the expansion might be better. In really low UW light such as sunrise/set I will focus first then switch to manual to prevent the AF hunting.

  • @SL8ER56

    @@mattysmithphoto8002 Thanks! When you said you switch to manual, what do you mean? Because the camera is in the housing so how can you switch the AF in manual? You talk about the back button autofocus?

  • @mattysmithphoto8002

    @@SL8ER56 Hey mate, Some housings allow you to switch to manual focus, particularly for Nikon DSLR cameras which have an Auto/manual focus switch on the camera body. But yes, back button focus will work too. Cheers.
