Over The Top - 17x17x17 - a look at the inside

More OskarPuzzle at kzread.info?s.... Buy at i.materialise.com/shop/item/ov... or www.shapeways.com/model/64058/.... Over The Top is a world-record 17x17x17 Rubik's Cube. It makes quite pretty patterns. It can take many, many hours to solve. Search the internet for "17x17x17" to find more information about this unique puzzle.
This video shows Oskar partly disassembling the puzzle to provide a look at the inside. The puzzle is built around a spherical core. There are 6 centers, 12 edges and 8 corners (like in a normal Rubik's Cube) with skyscraper-like structures built on them. All the other pieces hang between those skyscraper, floating over the spherical core. The long ends of these pieces are the "floating anchors" that keep the pieces straight up.

+bassl0va Except that each piece has a specific angle that that anchor thingy is hanging down at. The ones in the middle go almost straight down while the edge ones are angled. It'll be like solving the worlds most precise puzzle to put it all back.

This is scary cool. A true marvel of 3D engineering. You always impress me with your designs Oskar, and this one is clearly your best. My only complaint is the fact that it costs a total of $2,644.40. But that's just a testament to its sheer complexity and awe.

I keep going back to this. It's amazing how far cube tech has come. I remember wanting big cubes so much as a kid and back then having even a mass produced 9x9 or 8x8 was unheard of, and now I casually have the 8x8 and 9x9 sitting on my desk. Amazing.

Thank you so much Oscar, for making great videos and making puzzles everyday I hope I can meet you someday!
Easily my favorite of all your videos. I remember when I first got a Rubik's cube as a kid -- I didn't want to solve it half as much as I wanted to take it apart and find out how it worked! I think that's the difference between a mathematician and a physicist. The mathematician tries to solve the puzzle, and the physicist picks up a screwdriver. :-)
why did you use a flathead screw?

Actually the middle pieces are printed in a colored material, probably plastic, while the edges are printed black and need to be stickerd. This is because printing multi color pieces is more difficult and would cost more.

Even layered cubes are always harder to do than odd layers, can't be bothered to explain why, so 20x20 would be hard but 19x19 would probably be possible in the same mechanism if anyone could a) be bothered b) have the time and c) have the money to do it
