I bought the PSP and PS2 versions of Coast to Coast because you could link them and accumulate miles and points and both machines, effectively, two devices, one save. It was great to be able to play anywhere and bring your points, money and achievements back to the home version.

@@thereviewden Yes, same as Test Drive. PSP put out some great quality racers. Split/second was also another great conversion. Looking forward to more content!

As a big fan, I tested all versions and have to admit that the arcade version SP SDX (can also be played via emulation) is the best version. This version can easily be operated entirely from the steering wheel / racing cockpit and is adjustable up to 4K resolution. Hence the sharpest.

childhood game for me... dad got it for me with the OG xbox christmas of 04. Awesome game, great video

Worth mentioning the Japanese versions of Outrun 2 on Xbox and PS2 have uncensored Clarissa. Also, you can emulate Outrun Online Arcade in RPCS3 nearly perfectly now, and at 1440p/4k, it's gorgeous.

The fact that SEGA hasn't reissued this or even a Racing Game collection (I for one would love to see that on Steam) is a travesty. Daytona, SCUD Race, SEGA Rally & Outrun titles in a single collection - count me in!

The widescreen capable arcade board as you called it is called the Lindbergh. That version of the game is playable on PC using TeknoParrot but if you have original Lindbergh hardware there is a multiboot hard drive for the Lindbergh that contains a hacked version playable with a Xbox 360 controller for those that wants to play on original arcade hardware but don't have a driving cabinet.

@@thereviewden And as an added bonus, TeknoParrot can run the Lindbergh version of OutRun 2 at a native widescreen resolution. Full HD, 4K and UI elements will be scaled to proper widescreen unlike Coast to Coast which stretches the UI elements

Outrun 2 is a masterpiece! I remember that the people I met playing it online were very nice and cool as well... which is not usual for Xbox Live encounters with randoms!

Outrun 2 (and Pirates!) were the main reasons I bought an OG Xbox.

Just to slightly correct at the start, there was 17 years between Outrun and Outrun 2 (not 13). Regarding Online arcade and the stripped content, this was because Microsoft were enforcing a limited file size for XBLA releases. Which they eventually dropped but too late for OOA sadly. As for 2006 C2C, Japan PS2 got 'Outrun 2SP' later instead. This version lost online play but was the only version released with FFB wheel support.

played this on a xbox back then, feels like 360.. great game game and vibes. Watching it now, it still holds up as I expected.. Love the timeless SEGA art direction. Totally missed coast to coast.

I don't understand why this ip hasn't been brought back. It's so unique and seemed to sell well, they don't need an official car license if that's an issue.

My only complaint with Outrun 2 on the Xbox was an extremely minor one that stands out only because everything else was so well polished with this release. My quibble is that the downshift and upshift buttons in the unlockable Outrun 1986 are mapped differently than in the main game itself. After a few rounds of Outrun 2, it's slightly annoying to have to retrain yourself with what button does what. Especially since it obviously would've been trivial just to match the button mapping of Outrun 2 itself. And since this one stayed arcade faithful and lacked an on-screen gear indicator on the HUD unlike most ports of the arcade classic (There was obviously no need for it on the arcade cabinet with the physical gear shifter), it basically all but guarantees a quick restart if you haven't fired up Outrun 1986 recently. The 3 or 4 seconds it takes after the wave of the green flag to refamiliarize yourself with the contrarian button mapping scheme is a big time penalty in the original game. My only guess is that Sumo Digital was handed this project to insert into the port and weren't able to make modifications. But I'm not sure that's accurate as well, since the Ferrari model is restored here. So it's not a simple 1:1 recycling of what appeared in Shenmue 2 on the Xbox (Which utilized the altered car model first seen in Shenmue and Yu Suzuki Gameworks on the Dreamcast).

Great points. Yes the different shift buttons were annoying, but since OutRun 2 vanilla didn't benefit from tighter turns via downshift the way C2C did, I just used auto. Guess I was lucky in that sense. And that's a good question about whether they just took the Shenmue/Yu Works OutRun, or re-compiled it themselves. I can say that the original Testarossa sprites were used here since the game actually holds the Ferrari license, but the traffic uses the Shenmue sprites (no 911s, VW Bug looks like a Fiat 500) so it's an odd mix.

Sadly there's never been a game as good as this. All the clones just failed at capturing that magic.

Another great review. Been meaning to play the ps2 version for a while now, great to hear it's so full of content, shame about the need for psp connection though, I wonder if there's a way to hack that out in emulation

Thank you! I'm not sure about emu hacking or save exploits, but at the very least there IS a full unlock cheat code which includes the locked content. Unfortunately it does kinda ruin the fun of the campaign, but it's there. Maybe use as a second save?

If you have a computer with at least 4gb of ram (mine has 4gb ram and the game runs perfectly) you can play the PC version of the game

This is my favorite outrun, i remember playing coast to coast for hours un my pc, the music is so corny and i love it, its a shame the only way to play it nowdays is by pirating it Also, you can play Chihiro games on an og xbox by moding it

Coast 2 Coast is awesome! And YES, there are modkits and sites for upgrading the Xbox RAM for games like this and Virtua Cop 3. That kind of hard-modding is a little beyond me right now, but yes, you can mod it to Chihiro spec.

I love Outrun 2, but the footage recorded is too sharp. Recommend turning the sharpness down a tad.

This version is from which console?

Outrun online can be accessed and played very easily and guilt free for free, as its not available for purchase anyway.

Why are all the video makers using auto? Manual is the way to go. Edit: btw the xb360 version is completely gone. Even if you owned it, it got deleted. The ps3 version can still be downloaded if you previously bought it.

As you didn't mention JP version of Outrun 2 SP, some of your statements are untrue. That release is more complete than C2C.
