Output Platform Desk Review // Pros and Cons after 1 Month.

Музыка

I finally pulled the trigger and bought a "proper" music studio desk. Is this the Best Desk? Well that depends on what you are really wanting from your desk. I happen to really like the Output Platform Studio Desk but that doesn't mean its perfect..

Only half way through i had to pause and write a comment when you mention the price, initially i thought you were talking about thousands but then i realized when you said the total price was 1000$, for a high quality desk (or any piece of quality furniture for that matter) this is NOT expensive. Professional woodworkers and furniture makers price their creations for thousands of dollars and love it or hate it, its the price you paid for a quality hand made piece of furniture. Ikea and the like have brought down significantly the price perspective of furniture but along with it comes the quality. I dont know what the quality of this desk is but imo a piece of furniture is something that should outlast your own lifetime rather than be replaced after 5 or 10 years.

@@AGVersace100 Laminated wood is still very expensive though. They use AA or A quality cabinet grade birch; you're looking at ~$100/sheet.. and this desk is probably about 4 sheets alone. This isn't some shit quality home depot/lowe's laminated wood. Baltic Birch plywood is stronger than most hardwoods, including maple, white oak, and even regular birch hardwood. The layering process of this plywood also ensures 0 warp (unless you soak this thing underwater). This is very high quality wood.

I agree, If you ever take a look at beautifully designed hand crafted furniture (chairs for example) it can get into the several thousands of dollars. To me, under $1000 for something this intricately designed, compact, and sleek and sexy is not too much to ask for.

Congrats!! Your setup looks cozy. I’ve had this desk for almost a year, waited 3 months for delivery. Love it!! Have a big-ass 88 key Arturia in the keyboard tray. I got the side car after a while too. I’ve experimented with various stuff in the 3U rack spaces, but currently I’ve got nothing mounted in them. Instead, I just push stuff back in there to get it out of the way (looking at you TD-3). The side car has enough rack space for my rackable stuff. My 27” computer display is pulled all the way forward on the near edge of the raised bridge, not pushed back, or I couldn’t read anything. My studio monitors are bigger than your Adam’s and just barely fit. It’s never seemed too big for my small 11’ x 10’ home studio. It’s solid furniture, but I am careful not to damage it. ~

Nice review. I'm a carpenter and have a little home studio set up at my place. I'm on holidays right now so I started making a desk today myself using their design. Adjusted the size and made it a little smaller by about 3/4 because I agree that it's too deep/tall when I saw the specs. Considering my material cost $250 CAD, it is a hefty price tag, but they had someone design, engineer, and manufacture it, and also have lots of employees/overhead to cover so I can understand the price.

Nice choice Ricky, I've got one, same color, and with the sidecar option too. Worth ever penny, just the cable management design alone is worth it. It just makes me concentrate on music not "I wish I had a better desk/setup to accommodate all my musical situations", the platform puts all that to bed. It has also made me rethink my studio workflow because as we all know, if it's not all plugged in and ready to go, creative inspiration will turn pretty quickly to creative disfunction (CD), trying to find space then wiring in the new instrument etc etc etc. Once the moment is lost, what's left can only be despair, heartbreak and frustration and ultimately song abandonment. Oddly enough that situation feels very similar to what happened with my first wife......Synergy Brain Freeze.....OUCH!...... The booze, therapy & meds cost me way more the Platform, so I'm thinking it's money well spent....LOL ....thanks so much for your insightful videos, just excellent.

So glad you adjusted your chair, it's so much bigger than I thought and I've been measuring out specs in my space... And it's so deep... As for price, it's not inexpensive, but in comparison to other pro audio work desks, it's on the cheaper-side, sometimes by as much as half or third. Plus I think the design more than makes up for it - it looks like a rugged piece of furniture, and not something so highly specialized for music that you couldn't still use it for normal desk activities.

I've had mine a year. Yup, huge. Yup, heavy AF. Yup, expensive. I also got the side car--and might get a second. I got a dual monitor stand that works magic. 9.5/10 -- would recommend, the major negative is the weight when getting around back to adjust some cabling.

Check the output site for the list of supported controllers.

Nice desk. Beautiful. Congrats! I bought a 6ish feet Akai table (not desk) and it has been the decision I’ve made. Plenty of space and allows me to change easily by adding and subtracting when needed with monitor stands and space for my own storage containers underneath. I should mention I owned a desk with rack spots, but it just never worked for whatever gear I owned at the moment and I always felt like the bottom rack was a pain to use. Anyway... happy tracking and good luck.

I just received delivery and brought the 3 boxes up stairs to my office and put it together by myself (not recommended but it wasn't that bad)--it is heavy AF and about as sturdy as any furniture I've ever had. The parts have changed a bit since they made the instruction video. Getting the tray in was a b*tch and initially it wouldn't pull out more than 5 inches but I somehow got it to pull out all the way--15 inches. Extremely impressed with its superb quality and smart design. I could see this going for $2,500+ fully assembled. Don't know if I'll put a Mac or PC on it--leaning to Mac to go with an Apollo Twin Quad.

I'm in the process of getting a simliar desk built by a custom furniture maker - not much more expensive but it addresses the four biggest gripes I have with this one: first, the top shelf should only cover the left and right racks so you can put your monitor on the main surface. Of course, that means you need to widen the desk a bit for the screens most people use these days. Second, the keyboard tray didn't extend far enough back in the stowed positoin. I wanted mine completely out of the way, so it extends way back from the front and your knees can't hit it regardless of how high it is. That works well for me because I only pull out the MIDI keyboard maybe 15% of the time I spend at the desk, so I don't have to sacrifice ergonomics for the 85% of the time I'm not using it. Third, there's no finished veneer surface with rounded edges like on a "nice" piece of furniture, so it doesn't look like a "nice" piece of furniture. And fourth, those darn screw caps that show on the sides. Nothing says "cheap furniture" like those things. Output's desk is maybe worth the price but for just a bit more you can get something custom built that's both more functional and a "nice" piece of furniture.

I have both, the Output desk is in my music studio and the Uplift desk is my home office desk. I really do wish I could stand in the studio, but you can't beat the amount of surface area the Output desk provides (with the keyboard tray). Three tiers of surface just really lets me create a centralized command center with all my devices within reach. If you don't have a bunch of synths, drum machines, effects, midi controllers etc... the Output might be overkill and having the ability to stand would be more important, but if you've got a lot of boxes the Output is pretty sweet.

Decided against the Output Platform because of the monitor arrangement - my iMac is also my 'home office' computer so I need a work-appropriate ergonomic situation. I'm building based around a four-leg standing desk and a 36"x60" butcher block top - MIDI controller on top of the desk, keyboard and mouse drawer mounted underneath, monitors on ISOAcoustics stands. No rack spaces so I'll have to get a rolling rack to go underneath or something.

It's a also a bit wider @161cm (vs 152.4 for platform). Regarding monitors, do you favour a single widescreen monitor is it (like a 32") for Ableton use (on PC it's easier to split windows I think)? Would you go curved or not if you had to choose again? I guess the single screen allows for an easier Monitor arm implementation. There is also the fact that Studio monitors take space on the side of the desk. So I may have to either use wall mounts (or monitor arms from the desk Left & Jaspers Keyboard stand to the right of the desk) for my HEDD studio monitors, if I used 2 x 27" screens. Having a single 32 or 34" monitor on an arm solves that, with the ability to stick an extra 27" monitor (2560x1440) behind the Jaspers Keyboard stand on the right. It's hard to cram gear around and find the best workflow and setup alright, especially when you have a lot of various stuff to integrate. Peace. J

Thanks for the video, Ricky! I am looking at one of these due to being able to store an 88-key controller in that keyboard tray. But looking at the heigh of the platform above it, it seems like it might be too high and be an ergonomic pain? Did you end up putting your QWERTY keyboard and mouse up top? Do you think it would be useable that way? My hope it I can get this desk and still use it for my day job, which is design, using a keyboard and mouse most of the day.

I think the hardest thing with studio desks is my MPC60...interesting you have it right in the center, I like that. But it still seems cramped! Wish I could find a studio desk that has a little more table room though maybe that would be too large?

For the price I thought the materials and quality were low for the output. For $500 worth of top notch materials (the highest quality beech hardwood veneered marine plywood) I designed and build a custom desk with a friend that means I don’t have to live with the compromises of desks designed by others. I get not everyone has the time or desire to build their own.

So as a builder 3x times materials puts that desk you made at 1500$. I think 950 price tag shipped is a good deal. And I can make it as well.

The price is pretty reasonable compared to other desks. It is a really nice desk for making music. Other desks in the price range feel cheap. The desk is built really well.

Hey man you appear to be such a cool, correct, honest and down to earth soul, that I thought I can directly ask you if you don't want to change the links to all the gear one could buy... I know that Amazon is (in most cases) the cheapest and easiest way to get your stuff but fuck its just not cool what they're doing! And because you have quite a range and an impact on people I think it would be a good role model thing! How ever you may decide, I am glad if you just think about what I try to get across! :) ✌& respect

I looked at this desk, but honestly for how much stuff I have it's too small. I ended up building my own. It took me 2 weeks to do, but I made it the way I needed from a length and width perspective. I recently added a monitor extension to it to sit my mega big Samsung widescreen monitor with it's mega big base.... the monitor arm I originally was using broke... due to the weight of this monitor.... I like the Argosy 15L it is more in line with what I really need. The ability to have that longer middle section for the monitor from a desk perspective. I like the look of the wood with the Output desks... if they change the design to be longer and without the high shelf for the monitor it would be nice.

I REALLY REALLY want the Dangerfox Genesis 24U but it would look ridiculous in my bedroom studio, so I’m going with one of these. The Genesis 24 would’ve been nice because I could have fit the new Behringer 2600 and one of the three 8U racks and it has speaker stands... and a keyboard tray that fits an NI S88 MkII.

I have (or built) one as well, and although I do love it, I hate the keyboard tray. I used that store my midi keyboard, and then the qwerty on the top one, which I think was how it was intended. But if I have my arms at a comfortable height then, the tray is at a way too low position, and is just hurting my knees. I might make the desk is a little higher and try your setup then though. But I'm worried that my monitor would be way too high 🙃 Anyway still love my desk, but I ended up removing the tray

I really want a Platform in grey >_> I think I could bring my K5000S back out on the keyboard shelf, though dimensions are a pain to come by for that old thing. In fact I'm working on rearranging atm to reorganize all my music gear for one :D
