Outlander Creator Reveals the Toughest Casting Choice He Had to Make

Ойын-сауық

Who knew that the Starz time travel period drama Outlander would be a multi-season hit? Well, showrunner Ronald D. Moore was pretty confident about it. As the veteran TV producer with credits including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Carnivale, and Battlestar Galactica explains to our own Steven Weintraub in this video interview for Collider Connected, he was "very hopeful" that the show would find an audience.
The reason for that, he explains, was that the show, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, already had a dedicated fanbase. This meant that even a year before the series premiered, there was a full audience for a fan event previewing Moore's plans for the adaptation. "It gave me hope right from the beginning that this could be a phenomenon," he says.
What was less easy, though, was the process of casting the lead role of Claire, one that Moore had assumed wouldn't be difficult because of the number of potential actresses who might work. However, finding just the right woman to play the resilient former Army nurse who becomes unstuck in time was a lot harder than finding the perfect man to play her ultimate lifelong love, Jamie.
While Sam Heughan was the very first actor to be cast, they didn't settle on Caitriona Balfe until just a few days before the beginning of filming. "We were pretty certain from her tape that she was the one," Moore says - though a chemistry read with Heughan did seal the deal.
Above, watch Moore talk more about the series, including where things stand in terms of his plans for Season 6, as well as where discussions around a potential Outlander spinoff stand: Moore says that Sony and Starz are "in conversations about" the idea, and that they have "a couple of ideas" for what that spinoff might be. While Moore said that he wasn't ready to share anything specific about what those ideas might be, fingers crossed Adso the Cat plays a big part in it.

A Lord John Grey series is an obvious choice since there's already a series of books featuring his adventures. What I might also be interested in seeing is 1) a prequel covering Brian Fraser and Ellen Mackenzie's courtship and 2) some sort of show featuring these time travelers. We've come across a number of them thus far throughout the books and it would be interesting telling some of their stories and how they are inter-related. I know Diana has talked about doing a Master Raymond story -- and that sounds great -- but I'd also be interested in some of the other characters that were touched on.

I agree. They could not possibly use another actor. David Berry IS Lord John. Period. Full stop. The fans would revolt if they used another actor. That would be like replacing Sam or Caitriona.

Thanks, Steven! Thanks, Ronald! ⏳ I love OUTLANDER (as does my mother... she doesn't have STARZ, I *always* purchase the dvds for her). The 1st season was my favorite up until season 5, which has finally risen up to a similar production quality worthy of the epic tale. I'm sooo eager for future seasons... and a spin-off!!!

The spin-off will either be a Lord John Grey series, or what I would love to see is bring back Tobias Menzies and see why Black Jack Randall became what he did. That would be my jam right there. But we could have the two, the more the merrier.

I hate droughtlander, but my vote is, I'd rather wait longer and get a better final product. Even if that means breaking for everyone to do other things and come back refreshed. I loved every episode of season 5, but it felt rushed.

All the Christie family appearing in series 6. Sam's hair used to be dyed. Totally messed his hair up. So young Ian's hair will remain the colour it is. I am on 3rd read through of the books. I have no problems with the series. The series is based on the books, not a transfer..which would not be possible. Most cannot think of any other actors playing he parts than the current cast.

I absolutely love the show. Have been reading the books since 1994. But I do not like the way the writers have stripped Claire’s sense of humor from her. That’s my main and really only problem with the series. Claire comes off like a shrew and she’s so far from that.

It’s so sad that they had to decide that the show writers knew the story better than the original source. It has become a show that is just barely recognizable as anything based on anything Diana Gabaldon wrote. And I am still seriously annoyed that I believed Ron Moore when he said that they were making a tv show for the fans of the books. Season one episode one they had to change something, a completely unnecessary change that let the book readers know “this ain’t your story anymore, it’s the Ron Moore show”. So tragic because it could have been epic tv

I read the books and they were so good. The series, and I know casting is tough, but the 2 lead characters are not even close to the very vivid descriptions in the book. Clare was short, buxom and big bottomed. Not tall thin and willowy. Jamie was a very big man with long curly crazy man red hair. The picture of a Viking. Again, Sam Heughan, tall, slender, looks like an English dandy. Clare rested her face on his chest, she was that much dwarfed by Jamie. Can't watch the series even though I started because the characters are just so off. If I hadn't read the books and known what the writer's descriptions were it would have been ok.

  • @blanchekonieczka9935

They've screwed the show up. The plot is SO adulterated it's barely recognizable. The cast is wrong, Claire is supposed to have amber eyes. You seriously couldn't buy colored contact lenses? The books are diamonds and the show is cubic zirconium. You turned a silk purse into a sow's ear. Deleting important characters (Malva Christie), keeping characters alive that died in the books (Murtagh) and not following the plot of the books. I was going to purchase the DVDs until I saw clips of the show. Now, I'm sticking with the books because the show is garbage!

You are setting yourself for utter disappointment 100% of the time if you expect tv and films to be exactly like the books they are based on. Translating a 1200+ page book, which is 40-50 hours of audio time, to a 12 episode season is undoubtedly going to lead to things being left out and new things to amp up the drama. Books allow you to get into someone’s head. Tv relies on dialogue to do so, so things have to change. Plus, if something as small as a character’s eye color makes them barely recognizable, you aren’t giving enough depth to the character. Caitriona does an unbelievable job as Claire. Ever watched harry potter? Daniel radcliffe’s eyes are blue, not green. They tried colored contacts and he had terrible reactions to them. So now he’s ultimately wrong for the part?

@@zendragallhauser5056 they don't have to be exact but should be close enough not to insult the fans of the books. I suppose this is the difference between readers and viewers. Readers find integrity and consistency important while viewers are in it for an easy thrill.

@@blanchekonieczka9935 I read all the Outlander books and that is not true! The optics of a character in a book often tell you something about their personality, and also they are important, because in your head a very large man moves differently then someone that is small ect. Actors can show you the personality of a character without relying on their looks! It is a different medium of storytelling!
