    I used to have a 1955 Willy's pickup that I totally restored and sold it to a collector for big bucks. I recently bought a '96 XJ 4.0 High Output and have sunk thousands into it LOL. Once I get started I can't stop. I think it's a common disease...

    Damn you have put some major TLC into this XJ. I recently came up on a 98 XJ and I'm very excited to do some of these add on features like the overhead console. I just need to look for the ceiling panel because the previous Bozo decided to cut oval holes for a half-assed speaker job he did

    A fine build for serious trails! Rubicon Express Disco's are a class act. Your right abought the advantages or a rear locker - For only a little more cash then a Detroit Locker and a LOT less then ARB, I put an OX locker in my Chrysler 8.25. They are cable operated, but with the solenoid option, push button operation is a real luxury off road when you need it and an open diff when you don't.

    I have a 97 xj with that color interior. I bought it from a religious couple for $350.00. It needed brake lines and later tires, front/rear brakes, radiator, headlights and the hood roof and liftgate were delaminating and I painted them. Now I have 235/75/15 brand new and cost me more than the Jeep lol but I love the tire size with the 3.55 gears. I want to stiffen up the chassis and raise it up and go 33”. The engine has the same hp as 305 TPI camaro/Trans Am and close to as much torque but weighs 500 lbs less. I smoked a late mode wrangler the other day with somewhere around 33” tires up steep hill (for a city street) about 1/16 mile long maybe a little more. I worked in a Jeep dealer when I was 18-20 just out of auto tech 1995-1998 when the Jeep I own now was made. I always did like them. My mentor at the dealer was the master tech of the shop and at that time he told me he never saw a xj auto transmission fail. Then one came in but the way it smelled someone put rearend oil in it like 75/90 so they are bulletproof and so is the 4.0 imo. Saw many at 250k miles still getting work done and good vehicles. Great video and Jeep pal.

    I would recommend what you said to reinforce the chassis or actually the unibody I just fully framed and boxed out the entire unibody the ones that are destined for the trails were screaming for it mine is now like a little tank lol I recommend the IRO full kit and them T&M fab for a rear pillar and front pillar tie in to completely box it. As for the XJ automatic transmission they are rock solid I agree but not many know this they are actually a Toyota transmission 🤯 seriously just look it up type in google is AW4 tranny a Toyota made transmission and you'll see so that explains to me why they were die hards. I did my chassis in part because I'm planning to stroke the 4.0 to a 4.7 at 280 HP and about 320 FT lbs torque so it will be able to stand the abuse not to mention the 8.5" Rusty's long arm with their newest crossmember setup it's definitely a more then capable rig i also trussed the Dana 30 HP dropped in an OX locker cable setup with the new cable that threads in at both ends now so it will push to lock like always but now will pull back to always disengage, welded inner tube sleeves in C- gussets 1/4" Cntrol arm mounts WJ knuckle swap and brake upgrade and ditched the rear for a ford 8.8" 31 spline LSD with disc brakes. XJs rule new stuff drools😜

    Didn't look through all the comments to see if its already been mentioned, but the ZJ OHC is not compatible with an XJ, and the only things you be able to make work is the ambient temp, and compass. Also on your trans cooler just plumb the aftermarket cooler ahead of the OEM radiator cooler (out of trans, through aftermarket, through OEM, trans in). That'll one lessen the heat load in the radiator, and two warm any over cooled fluid going back the the trans. Also if you don't already have it mounted that way mounting the aftermarket cooler over the mechanical fan side of the radiator will also help keep the trans at a more stable temperature.

  • @OutJeeping

    @OutJeeping

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a different way of looking at it for the trans cooler, mine was overcooling especially in the winter it wouldn't even hit 100 Degrees. But you are correct with the ZJ OHC, It would work with the XJ if you also wire in a ZJ BCM. But I already got it figured it out, was able to source an XJ Computer and have it wired in.

    It really all depends on what Terrain you're going to be off roading on. If it's a lot of rocks like how it is in Moab I would recommend a long-arm suspension to get a better angle for climbing over rocks. But you'll have to do some research on companies to see what setup works best for you.

    I am getting close to finishing a very large project build myself. I would highly recommend Rusty's offroad newest long arm setup with middle disconnectible crossmember allows you to take the middle out and keep your long arms on when you work on your tranny for heavy services or filter change etc. Also I went with Rusty's cause they are hands down the most solid rugged option for XJ mods they are not cheap and shipping hurts but bent arms and being broke down on a trail hurts worse trust me on that. I LOVE XJs and this build is my 8th XJ out of 17 vehicles. I doubt you would ever entertain it but if it's a never sell rig then I recommend fully framing and boxing out the entire unibody with frame stiffener kits if you can weld really good I have just finished this or a long time welder friend by trade did and it is the BEST thing I've ever done to an XJ by far you would thank me and never regret it but it's a VERY extreme and dedicated task to undergo but if you want it done right and to be lightyears safer for her it's worth every painful minute cause eventually the unibody with enough flexing and wheeling repeatedly will snap the spot welds like pop corn and eventually you will park while flexed and your doors won't open. Back to main point Rusty's offroad is best option not for unibody stiffeners though that would be Iron Rock Offroad full kit.

Lifted pickup trucks on the other hand... I got stopped at a State Patrol checkpoint in my YJ once. The officer asked how much lift it had. What was I supposed to tell him. I don't even know. I never measured it, and didn't care when I built it. It might be 8". I'd have to compare it to another early YJ with not sagging factory springs. Where do I find that? The funny thing is that putting larger tyres on makes it look like you have less suspension lift.
