Outer Banks Shelling - Is it worth it? | Shelling Wrap-up and OBX Tour!

Shelling in the Outer Banks can be a challenge! From the constant winds and vast beach area, it is hard to know where to look and even if it is worth it to go shelling! The northern Outer Banks was not a complete bust, but I found the southern OBX to have more shells. That part aside, visiting the area is definitely worth it!

Hi! I had a chance to finally visit the Outer Banks back in August. Amazing trip and loved the drive down the shoreline all the way to Hatteras. We stayed in the Kitty Hawk/KDH/NH area. The first few days I didn't find any shells but the next three days I woke up very early and walked over to the beach and so many beautiful and colorful scallop shells washed up! I made sure to leave some for other collectors. I found one baby's ear and some pretty slipper shells and a few angel wings. Also, broken shark eyes (tops) and some other neat, broken shells with spiral tops. I also found a bit of coral and two chunks of coquina. My brother found a medium sized whelk while out in the shallow part of the ocean but had to chase it because the waves were about to snatch it back--lol. So, it looks like good shelling in that area are in the early mornings......and the view and ocean are stunning! 🙌🏿 Thanks for your shelling videos!

Oh wow! That is so great that you found some shells! 👏🏻👏🏻 ❤️The early bird catches the worm! Thanks for the update! I hope to get some shelling in this coming winter. Someday, I hope to spend the whole winter at the beach! Crossing fingers!

I had quite a good shelling experience in the Outer Banks. I did go in December/January which helped out a lot, but I found some areas in Hatteras Island that were very consistent for shelling. It seems to me that the east facing more touristy beaches don't have a whole of anything. Once a winter storm blew threw, the shelling on Hatteras was actually quite amazing, though I don't have those videos edited and up yet. Thanks for sharing!

I love shelling at OBX. I’ve found some great glass and shell finds at one particular beach but it’s my top secret spot. 😊 Also sunset at jockey ridge is gorgeous! next time check it out.

It is definitely hit or miss in the OBX. The further you walk away from where most of the people are, the more likely you are to find shells. I have definitely had better luck on the southern beaches or even in Corolla. I have not found much of anything in Kitty Hawk or Nags Head, likely because they are very touristy and commercialized.

Yes I agree - the southern areas for sure! Didn't get to Corolla this time - hopefully next time!

Start at South beach & Go to the point, then onto Frisco. You’ll find big & rare shells. Go early in the morning at the break of dawn. Also, the Origen Inlet is another good area.

Thanks for the tips - I hope to go back in the next year or two. I was looking at a map after your comments and wondering where is Frisco?

Frisco is near the south end of Hatteras, not far from the Hatteras Lighthouse. There is a NPS campground there that most prople seem to think is the nicest of the 4 NPS campgrounds in the Outer Banks. @@TravelingTreasureFinder

The kites made up for the lack of shells. I was on Hatteras about 5 years ago. Not much for shells.

It was fun seeing all of the kites! People seem to be in agreement that the shells are hit or miss in OBX 😊
