Outer and Inner Sleeve Protection For Your Vinyl Records

Ойын-сауық

One of the ways I protect my record albums is the use of outer and inner sleeves. What are those? Well, in this video, I’ll show you their benefits, what kinds to get, and how to properly use them.

One thing to avoid when inserting sleeve and especially the record itself into your outer sleeve is to drop them in; this will damage your record over time along the edge and can cause nasty cracks etc, just gently slide it in by not using gravity and pushing with your hand on the edges instead.

The suggestion to keep the record inside the inner sleeve on the outside of the jacket is an amazing tip and I plan to do that on all of mine. Allows me to not have to handle the jacket as often. Awesome

TOTALLY agree with the method in which you store your records. Record in anti-static inner sleeve, in the back and facing to the L/R so dust doesn't get in. Fantastic video - every vinyl record enthusiast needs to see this!

I wasn’t really a fan of leavening the record outside it’s sleeve but seeing this changed my mind. Plus at least 30% of my records are colored, so it’d be nice to turn it over to see the beautiful colored record in the back.

Nice job on the video! I store mine just as you do 😊 one thing to mention is not to hold the vinyl pressed between your fingers/thumb. Always hold w inner palm and thumb on the edge only and your two center fingers on the label. Otherwise, your needle picks up whatever oils etc are on that first track! Love the vid though, well done.

Although flaps are somewhat of a p.i.t.a, one major advantage is that the flap+adhesive allows the cover to be pulled tightly around the cover. This makes the cover look nice and smooth, and prevents bunching when sliding on n off the shelf.

I store my records exactly the way this gentleman does! The only difference is that I like my MoFi sleeve opening on the right as I hold the stored record in the outer sleeve with the back of the album facing me...That way when I remove the MoFi sleeve with record I can hold the inner sleeve with my left hand and remove the record with my right hand (since I'm right handed)!! If I were LEFT handed I would position the opening of the MoFi sleeve on the left with the back of the album facing me...removing record with my dominant left hand! I wonder if this gentleman is left handed!? I've been storing records this way for at least the last 6 years and wish I had done so originally with the previous records I've collected! I started doing this when I began getting records by mail...The sellers shipped the records that way to "avoid ringwear" on the outer cardboard album jacket! I figured if it's best to SHIP the album that way it also makes sense to STORE the album that way!

I still like simple paper sleeves. They are the easiest to deal with especially if I'm DJing and need to grab records fast in and out of the jackets. I do use some plastic inners at time especially for records where the jackets are getting torn or worn down on the spine etc. Then a more durable plastic inner is needed

I'm also sometimes 'torn' about whether to use outer plastic sleeves or not. They are bulky and take away from the cover art (the dull ones I tend to use) I like the poly / shiny ones you use especially without the flaps. Hate the damn flaps. I will often cut those if I get a record with a sleeve with a flap on it. The flap just makes it extra cumbersome and there is dread that I might get a jacket stuck on that sticky part! Sometimes I like to just go for it and leave the record without an outer plastic. Go wild in a way. Sometimes I even like a record to look a bit worn and old or played often. Then I'll start to hunt a mint copy of a jacket lols.

I'm brand new to collecting records and I bought 2 pocket outer sleeves from vinyl storage solutions, and clear inner sleeves from Amazon. When I went to sleeve my records I was ultimately uncomfortable with storing the record in the back pocket, it just looks vulnerable to scraping on my shelf when I pull out the jacket and also there is nothing stopping the record from sinking to the bottom of the sleeve and just resting on the shelf. I'm thinking it might just be that I need to buy more expensive inner sleeves that provide a little more protection, or am I over thinking this?

I went the Blake sleeve flap route for a while but they just got on my nerves, the flap tends to curl and look unsightly and one printed inner sleeve got ruined when it stuck to the adhesive 😡. While Ive seen many people store the record outside the sleeve as you do I like to keep mine in the jacket. The jackets job first and foremost is to protect the record and I prefer to have as much protection between the record and the outside world as possible. Also I don't believe the hype that it reduces ring wear. You still have the record sandwiched between two jackets, it's just two different jackets. I think using outer sleeves and not tightly packing is sufficient to avoid ring wear. Great video though, I enjoying seeing how different people store and look after their records, a fascinating subject for all vinyl geeks!

I like to keep the record in the jacket as well. The first I heard about keeping the record outside the jacket was probably sometime in the 1990s maybe? I thought it was weird. Just like the outer sleeves with flaps (reminds me of my comic collecting days) For me I get most of my track info from the back of the jacket. If I need more detail like track times I'll open the thing up to look on the label. Years ago I knew enough about my collection that I rarely had to inspect the record before playing it.

This is the first year I've been collecting the hype stickers -- which I cut out of the shrink or polybag and save in a pile for when I get something along the lines of a small photo album-style book to put them in. Some folks tuck them in the corner of their outer sleeve in front of the jacket so they can see them. Didn't think I'd save them but now I find that I'm doing just that. Good luck with whatever solution works for you.

Do they actually add value to a resale? I don't think they do. I could be wrong tho. If not then why do we all like to save them? I also cut them out sometimes and toss it into the jackets. I doubt they would add much to resale, and I'm generally not looking to resell until my deathbed, but I would be stoked to pick up an LP at a 2nd-hand shop that had a couple of those little bits in - part of the tangible history of the thing that brings joy :-)

Cut the shrink wrap away leaving an 1/8 of an inch on all sides and drop on paper towel. Carefully watch looking for shrink to wrinkle or bubble. Using tweezers separate the hype sticker from shrink and immediately transfer to clean outer sleeve.

Somebody ought to rethink how these things work or don't work. In my experience one size does not fit all. The typical size of a single album cover is 12" 1/4 × 12" 1/2, double albums are just slightly larger. The problem with the flap style sleeves is that the flaps are too short. I just use a piece of tape to seal them. I do not use the strip provided. Hey, it works for me!

Having the vinyl exposed in a thin plastic is a bad idea. Easy to dent. Keep in jacket with outer sleeve to protect cover from wear. Simple
