    I feel like we're only just scratching the surface of what these neopixel strips can accomplish. Case in point the wonderful effects when used in light Sabres.

    hey, both components are optional (and weren't even recommended when I made the video). The resistor especially so when you have a logic shifter; the capacitor will act to smooth the injection incase of fluctuations so I would recommend, especially for larger installs

    i have a couple question that i’m really hoping you could answer! so i want to put 20M of leds around my room that have wled. how should i go about connecting the leds strips together so that they reach the length of my room and what power supply do you suggest. thank you so much :)

  • @WillSurridgeTech

    @WillSurridgeTech

    3 жыл бұрын

    The power supply will depend on the density of the LED pixels, they draw 0.18W per pixel at full (ws2812B strip that is) - so if you have 60 pixels per meter, thats 216W. As for joining them together, you can either buy connectors online, or just solder some wires between them.

  • @WillSurridgeTech

    @WillSurridgeTech

    3 жыл бұрын

    I kept the PSU and controller inside; but you can use a waterproof enclosure if you need it outdoors - as for soldered connections, if you mount it under the roof line then you shouldnt get any problems; if you put it on the floor like me then you can consider a waterproof connector or just hot glue!

    Is there any way to have onboard control to toggle though effects? I have a project for a friend that wants this in his car but I don't like the idea of him using his phone to choose effects while driving. It would be great to just have a button on the board to toggle though a few set effects like chaser ect

  • @WillSurridgeTech

    To be honest, I dont really know...the thicker you go the less voltage drop, and the more you inject the better. I only used thin bell wire for about 10m total and it wasnt really enough - ended up creating a loop by joining the end back to the PSU which helped - that was 5V and 150LEDs total - I wouldn't be afraid to go at least to 18AWG if not thicker - try a voltage drop calculator and see what it comes up with - sorry its not an exact answer but hope it helps!

  • @WillSurridgeTech

    I think you’re better off using one transformer for both the controller and the LEDs, but I believe if you just connect the controller to one transformer as normal and the leds to the other then you will need to connect the 2 ground connections together

    Why do you use the Logic shifter?? The power supply delivers 5V and powers the D1 mini? Thumbs up for your good work ;)

  • @WillSurridgeTech

    @WillSurridgeTech

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi, the logic shifter is there to take the logic from 3.3V to 5V. The D1 mini may have a 5V power input, but the logic (data) output is 3.3V. The LED strips are designed to run on 5V logic, although they can run on a bit less. You can get away with using 3.3V logic on short runs, but over a long run the voltage drop is too much so the strip can't handle it. If the voltage is too low then the strips won't respond properly and will probably just flash randomly

    @@WillSurridgeTech Another trick is to put one pixel right next to your controller. This will then up the voltage to 5v on its output and basically act like a level shifter. you can even tell WLED to ignore that pixel. It's in the LED Preferences and is called "skip first LED".

    I was talking about watts - each pixel needs 0.18W, so at 5V each pixel will draw 0.036A (or there about) - I got this value from Hook Up Rob, so haven't actually tested it myself (www.thesmarthomehookup.com/the-complete-guide-to-selecting-individually-addressable-led-strips/)
