Outdoor Chameleon Cage Bank Tour

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Welcome to another day in the life of a chameleon wrangler! Today, I give a tour of an outdoor bank of chameleon cages with some very special female live-bearing chameleons. They will be having babies in the next six months so I am getting prepared! I talk about some benefits and challenges surrounding keeping chameleons outdoors.

Is 20 x 37 inches of floor space acceptable (height will be between 4 and 5 ft)? It will be a semi-outdoor enclosure (they will get sunlight from sunrise to late afternoon, but with a roof overhead to protect them during typhoon season) with live plants. I'll be using Golden Pothos, and I'll let it crawl up some branches, and Hibiscus, which will be planted in between enclosures. I'll let some of its branches grow inward the enclosures. I live in a tropical country, same as Hawaii, where some of them are invasive.

What type of plant is that with the yellow and pink flowers? Looks great, would it work indoors?

The yellow one is called Carolina Jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens) and the pink one is called Jasminum polyanthum. Growing them indoors would take strong light. It may be possible with the LED bars, but I have not yet tested that.

I am in costal Southern California so I have many months out of the year that I can keep chameleons outdoors. But most areas have at least a couple of months that this is possible. Obviously, some areas more than others. So you just work with what you have!

45 F is no problem for a veiled chameleon as long as there is sun during the day. Cold nights are fine as long as the days get warm enough. You have the advantage of having many clear sunny skies. The three keys are large, well planted cages with a soil floor. I have had great success for Veileds with 4x4x6’ high. The bigger the cage the more they can take care of themselves.

That said, I wouldn’t just shock them and suddenly throw them into cold nights after being in a warm house. Let them ease into it over time.

Hey brother, I have 2 male panthers one of the age 1 year and another 6 months it’s spring and I’m in Long Beach California I’d like to house my chams outside this spring and summer but my humidity ranges 30-50% in the day and night 50-80% but there cages can get 1-4 hours of morning sun and the rest shaded for the day I see my low drops are mid low 50’s and day Lowkey to mid 70’s does that sound proper?

Jackson's and Veileds would love those numbers. Panthers would like a little more sun in their lives. I am sure it would work for them. I have actually had panthers out in weather like that. But they look as happy. I can't offer any absolutes. Just my feelings based on the experiments I have personally done.
