    But it was on France's side, so I don't think France's invasion was the reason for this. Maybe back then, things were different and you invaded countries to ally with them.

British control over these territories made them from tribal countries into major economically developed powers. And by conquering these territories, they massively increased the amount of available resources they had at their disposal (Africa, India and the Carribean are very rich in terms of resources) which allowed them to beat Germany in two world wars, which had many fewer colonies than the British in the First World War and none in the Second (They didn't utilise Vichy France's colonies).

  • @ubertuber3d

    @ubertuber3d

    Mocsk A lot of people just seek to rob Russia of any credit for a victory. It is true that winter and typhus were responsible for most of the Grande Armee's losses, but keep in mind disease was always the big killer in warfare up until modern times, and we can't exactly fault Russian generals for taking advantage of their country's size. Napoleon made some mistakes in the Russian campaign that cost him his army, it's as simple as that.

    ubertuber3d indeed i hate to read clueless people discrediting russian achievements and simply crediting the russian winters as if russians dont freeze and die of cold. when you read about the tactics russia deployed in her wars also against the nazis i feel saddened to read dumb people ridicule the sacrifice russia always had to make, like no other nation. they have always fended back superior military powers and reduced them to nothingness at the end. history repeats itself and nations have always underestimated russia and its warrior gene, intelligent mind and relentless will and we see this even today as the west just keeps poking russia, provoking it and underestimating it once again.

Among the battles that France has delivered over the past 800 years 185 his armies have won 132 of them, and have lost 43, leaving only 10 battles undecided. If Napoleon kept the peace with Spain, and did not invade Russia things would be very, very different. Matthew: You are right about Hitler's conquest meeting a similar demise to that of Napoleon, although I see two key differences between Napoleon and Hitler: 1. As you know, we refer to the Napoleonic wars in the plural because it was a series of small wars. Napoleon could win a few battles, sign a peace treaty, and then have a respite where he could prepare for the next campaign. He could often fight his enemies one at a time. Hitler did not have this luxury because even after the fall of France, the British refused to sign a peace treaty. The Germans had to fight three of the world's most powerful countries at the same time. 2. Hitler's ultimate objectives were different than that of Napoleon. Napoleon wanted to create an empire like that of Rome, where subject kingdoms would pay taxes/tribute to France, but would exist with some degree of autonomy. If you lived in one of his subject kingdoms, you would still speak your own language, and be subject to the laws of local authorities who would share the same language and culture as you. France would be the supreme authority, but for the most part, life would go on as normal. Napoleon may have even believed that the people of these lands were better off as subjects of a French empire. From what I can tell, Hitler wanted to create something completely different. He wanted to create a German nation stretching all the way to the Caspian Sea. I don't think he was interested in ruling over the Slavic people in this land; I think he wanted to get rid of them. When the German army barreled through Belarus and Ukraine, they wasted no time in renaming towns and streets, and made little pretense of wanting to be friends with the Slavic people living there. At the beginning of the war, some of the people in these regions were happy to be rid of the communists, but when they realized what Hitler's real intentions were, they began fighting the occupying German forces. I am going to engage in a little bit of speculation here, but I think that a German victory would have played out like this: There were large enclaves of ethnic Germans living in the Asiatic Soviet republics. I think that when the dust settled from the war, Hitler would have worked out some sort of relocation plan with Stalin, by which Slavic people were sent east and Germanic people were sent west. Many Slavic people might have met an altogether different fate, i.e. concentration camps. I would also guess that Hitler would have extended an open invitation to Dutch, Scandinavian, and other Germanic people to help Germany populate this new empire.

    @EmperorTigerstar Very good job! Anyway i have one question... 0:45 Why Western Pomerania is coloured in blue, while Sweden is neutral? Wasn't it still part of Sweden at this time? According to my informations Western Pomerania became part of Prussia only after the Congress of Vienna. And furthermore i don't get, that a small swedish (?) province should ally with France, while it' s sorrounded by much more powerful potential enemies?

    This is IMO the most important video you've made, because of all of the history shown in the border changes. The vacuum created from the French Empire allows the British Empire to be created, but more importantly these wars created all of the modern prejudices for all the peoples in Europe that still last within Europe to this day. The Spanish and English dislike the French more than other nations (just my experience from talking with friends) and the history of this war is why. The defeat of France also means that french is no longer the second language of all the nations of Europe, the intellectuals and aristocracy no longer speaks French after the 1800s at dinner parties and English becomes dominant in business

    Actually, and don't ask me why, the international language of diplomacy remained French until WW1. Yeah I know, it even surprised me. The treaty of Versailles was written in French AND English, which is considered the first decisive blow against the French language hegemony in diplomatic matters. Well, it was unavoidable though, with successively two superpowers in history being english-speaking (Britain then USA who really imposed the language everywhere).

    French was still quite a popular language for the middle-to-upper classes in Russia in the mid-to-late 19th century (I thank having read Dostoyevsky for knowing that).
