A painting that can barely be seen, a figure peering out, and a few unique issues with which to contend. On this the spookiest day of the year, it only seems fitting that the artwork too should be coming out of the darkness.
Pardon my voice being a bit raspy, tis the season of shrieks and screams after all!

I may be totally wrong (frequently am!) but I think that may be a self portrait of the artist. It is dated 1944 which is just before he died in 1945. There is a pen drawing self portrait with a very similar piercing stare, fluffy hair and pointed chin. But then again it may be Harry Houdini's Grandmother (he was Hungarian).

I really love this one Julian. I could stare at this painting for hours, it makes me feel a range of different emotions. It has its own "haunting", beautiful or sad, it demands your attention and I love it. Your conservation work as always is just perfectly brilliant. Thank you Julian.
Julian I want to know how your conservation skills have impacted your everyday life. Has your woodworking helped with home renovation? Understanding of heat and moisture etc helped with cooking? Research and mentoring skills helped with parenting? Very random but I feel like there’s so much overlap in practical ways that we might not think of.

At a time when it tangibly feels like so much in our country, our society, our economy even our democracy feel like they are unravelling, tearing, being damaged it is important for the spirit to experience even small moments where things are being repaired, made stronger, made better, reborn. And Julian's calming voice and spirit (his dad's presence is tangibly there too through the son) is like a brief safe harbor from the storms. ❤❤
Ngl the initial state of this painting makes it absolutely perfect for Halloween
I absolutely loved this painting. Just like you said, "hauntingly beautiful".
Oh. Oh. My 105 year old grandmother has a painting even darker than this, that is I believe a portrait of an ancestor. I'm 53, and I remember this painting being brighter in my childhood - I would love to be able to get that painting cleaned while she's still here - she still has great eyesight. I doubt I can afford this process now or ever, but maybe someone can, some day....this is so amazing to watch.
It's always impressive how you pay attention to every tiny detail. Somehow I missed this video from a month ago, I don't always get notifications like I should. I can tell you are struggling with a very bad cold and I can feel your throat as you struggle with laryngitis. I hope you're doing much better and are taking care of yourself, put on an extra layer when you go outside into the cold! 💕🙏
Feel better, Julian! Nice Milton Avery in your studio! And say hi to Kit from us.
Julian is a hard worker. It’s clear he has been sick, but he still narrated the video for us.
In the old days, in that part of the world, a deceased body lay on the family's covered parlour table until the actual funeral. Which may explain the closed eyes. That's what this painting reminds me of.
Careful! Don't forget what happened to Dr. Janosz Poha when he was trying to conserve the painting of Vigo the Carpathian.
What a powerful , haunting painting. The line drawings in the opening montages were spectacular. And an impeccable conservation. I also think the conservation has added some darkness. Struggling with a nasty flu myself. Hope you feel better soon Julian.
I love the suble moments of Julian being creeped out by the painting 😂😂
How wonderful to have one's own studio and to have been apprenticed by a master of the craft. Getting to touch beautiful artworks everyday and being entrusted with their care...I am very jealous. In today's fast-paced, mass-produced world, these kinds of jobs are rare and precious.
Beautiful work. Love to watch your patient steps to refinishing. You are mesmerizing.
This is the kind of painting that stares into your soul. Now, that sounds like a great plot for a horror film.
Julian, I was an aircraft mechanic/technician/fabricator. We used the same vacuum system only we used it for making carbon fiber or fiberglass parts. we also had a kiln that we would put the part into. Essentially a large hot table. I love when you bag and vacuum paintings.
I can imagine this woman (for woman the subject is!), has seen a LOT. Perhaps a loved one lost in the war, perhaps her entire family lost. She looks well acquainted with grief and exhaustion. She's beautiful. Thank you for bringing her back from the dead.
I love these videos. It would be amazing to see a day-in-the-life of you in the studio! We could see just how much time you spend on different things throughout the day
🤣 I'm a month late but the spookified adjectives he's using are having me laughing out loud
