The best thing about this game it that you were able to go out of bounds in every map and it was rather easy to do. And you could then walk for miles and miles

IDK the game kind of got ruined when I did that first thing in the game just by walking away, ruined the illusion it was a big open level. After finishing the game though it was fun to find secrets.

@@BrokenOpus yep. It wasn't open world at all. Couldn't swim, would drown, couldn't scale a 2 foot high obstruction, it would eventually lead back to the only path available. It has whole lot of nothing.

@@HenryTownsmyth how or why would you swim in the frozen and irradiated waters of post nuclear russia? All of the maps that allow you to fall into water are frozen to temperate as best. I get what you're saying about wanting freedom but the devs clearly intentionally chose to use the water as an obstacle instead of a playspace, and as a linear story in an open environment the game definitely benefits from its ability to control your movement as it exploits small crossings and boat docks for exciting enemy chokepoints or mutant ambushes. And this is less important but.... are you actually upset that your character climbs back onto land instead of letting himself drown hopelessly like a baby in the tub? Drowning seems like kind of a questionable benchmark for you to judge open world games with lmfao.

God I LOVE the Metro series of games. Honestly the series has some of the best, if not THE BEST post-apocalyptic atmosphere. It's one of the few games that I reply just to enjoy its setting. The dark tunnels, the eerie sounds, the makeshift settlements, it's all so good.

I've always been greatly impressed by the first-person animations in _Metro._ They're always super-detailed and realistic compared to what you see in other FPS games, but I'd assumed they were made by working some poor animator to the bone! It seems like they were able to accomplish this by using motion-capture..? Surprising, motion-capture is commonly used in games, but you still don't see first-person animations to the quality of Metro very often.

  • @peoduction6068

@@peoduction6068 That's just false. Cutscenes for example are most definetly motion captured, that's one of the reasons you see Artyoms full body. It's WAY cheaper and faster to mocap and place the camera on the characters head than to hand animate everything. It's not like motion capture is expensive, technically you could do it with Xbox kinect so why wouldn't 4A use it.

That said, I just can’t think of any other reason why they’d spend the money and take the time to animate the player model so thoroughly if they knew from the outset of development that we’d never see those animations.

The original version of metro 2033 actually had out of body cut scenes, but they got replaced in remastered version. Maybe here they were not sure which path to take.

It's common nowadays to animate first person cutscenes with motiom capture. The cutscenes where you see Artyom's body are mocapped and the camera is placed where his head is. Dying light 1 uses this same technique, the final fight is really detailed even in third person because of that. It's cheaper and faster than hand animating the animations.

@@Rob712 but you don’t see MANY of the *custom* animations that were done for Artyom’s body at any point in Exodus, right? How does that fit in?

another good video from snipey. :) 1:43 im idly curious what would happen if head rendering were turned on for the player -- if we'd see the same face as in the ending, shown at 16:33. the way shadows usually work is that before you render the scene normally, you first render the scene "from the light's perspective." if the light can "see" an object, then it should be shining light on that object. if the light can't "see" something, it's because that object is behind another object or behind the light. things that the light can see should also be brighter if they're closer to the light, and darker if they're further away. so, you render an image -- "shadow map" -- which indicates what the light can see. then, when rendering the scene for real, we can take any given surface, on any given object, and use math to figure out where (as in what pixel) on the shadow map that surface would be, and how bright its pixel would be on the shadow map if nothing were in front of it. we can compare this to what's actually on the shadow map, and this allows us to know if the pixel at that spot on the shadow map is brighter than this surface would be -- that is, if there's something else in between the current surface and the light: something in front of the current surface from the light's perspective. if so, then that "something" should cast a shadow on the current surface, so we don't light the surface. which means that in order for the player's head to cast a shadow on the ground, _there must be a head_ in the scene. there's no major fakery here; there's a 3D model for the head; it's just that the game is choosing to render the head only in the shadow map. only the light can "see" the head, and there is a part of the ground that the light can't "see" because it's behind the player's head. and because we know there actually _is_ a head, it must be true that if someone knows how to tamper with the game in the right way, then the head could be made visible. of course, it might be that no one knows how to tamper with it in that way

This is so damn interesting, how they make Games like Movies, where we only can see what we should to see.
