    Your wheel speed is what you are fighting. Thats why it tipped easier on ice. Wheel speed is causing the gyroscope effect so even tho the CF1 was rotating slower the wheels were spinning faster causing it to lift. Lighter tires will help a lot as well as what you guys figured out about not going wide open throttle.

  • @damon20r
    @damon20r3 жыл бұрын

    I believe that on the ice the wheel speed is a lot higher and the greater gyroscopic effects from the wheels spinning on a different axis than the machine is spinning is causing it to lift.

    This is exactly what is happening, the wheel speed is too high and the vehicle is too light in comparison to the size and weight of the tires.

  • @michaeldupre1382

    @michaeldupre1382

    3 жыл бұрын

    I totally agree, smaller lighter tires (that thick tread versus sidewall) is greatly increasing the angular momentum causing lift through the axles to the frame. cant slow down the wheels but you can lighten the tires and shrink the radius from the axles---greatly reducing the resulting torque and angular momentum. 3 in smaller diameter and a few pounds per tire is a multiplicative reduction in that lifting force. So we know theres more speed to be had safely (relatively)

    Well I think Doug is right about gyro forces coming into effect. Every mechanical piece of that machine is spinning inline with the machine. Like holding a bicycle wheel and spinning it, and trying to turn it sideways, it wants to lean over instead. Magnified by a ton in this example with how much mechanical weight is spinning!

    It's a combination of angular momentum from the wheels and to a lesser extent the friction between the wheels and the ground that creates the lifting force. If we assume that the diffs are locked and all four wheels are spinning at the same speed, all wheels are creating an equal amount of lifting torque along the axis of wheel rotation. That said, the rear wheels are trying to flip it straight to the side while the front wheels are trying to flip it both forward and to the side. At a 45 degree steering angle, the force to the side is about 71% (cos45) of what the rear wheels are contributing. So DON'T try to straighten out the steering while spinning! There's a big difference between how much each wheels is contributing to the spinning motion and reducing the ground friction. In a left turn, the FR wheel is by far the biggest contributor and the RL the smallest. FL and RR has a similar angular offset towards the center, but RR has a bigger impact of the friction and is placed behind the CG in a F-R perspective, therefore it's a more important contributor if we could vary the wheel speeds individually. If open differentials are used, the left side wheels will spin faster for no good. That brings us to the next topic, G-forces. It is important that the driver is placed as close as possible to the center of rotation. The G-force at 1 ft radius at 100 rpm is 3.4. Double the distance and it will double the force, or double the speed and it will quadruple the force. So how to increase the speed? - Keep wheel speeds down, let the build up take a longer time. The lake might be worth another shot. - Lighter wheels. - Lower the CG, not a huge contributor while spinning, but it gives you a bigger margin when it starts to lift. - Increase maximum steering angle. - Adjust toe settings in the rear, out on the right side, in on the left side. - Add mass on the left side. - Make it even wider. - Locked diffs - With locked diffs, remove the left side driveshafts. - Counter rotating gyroscope. Before you do anything stupid, make sure to install a remote kill switch. If you make any major modifications, ease into the spins and make sure that the driver position is well centered, the g-forces could escalate quickly. Stay safe!

    I think I can explain this. Those look like some pretty heavy wheels and they're zinging along. I think what's going on is gyroscopic procession. Because you're in a flat spin that is perpendicular to the rotation of the wheels it causes a moment torque that wants to lift the machine up in that direction.

    As a physicist I can say think you are on to something. It makes sense with the lower rpm on glaze ice as well as the lower traction will result in more wheel speed at a relatively lower rotational speed. This is a tough problem since you want to minimize traction to reduce the drag on the flat spin, but maximize the traction to get the most spin with the least wheel speed. Lighter, smaller tires would help alot as well.

  • @stevenfirst8222

    @stevenfirst8222

    @@Skwisgar2322 Doug mentioned that when he would try to increase the wheel speed that's when it would happen. So, it would make sense that the higher RPM was adding extra inertia causing it to tip up like that. On the ice adding wheel speed didn't necessarily increase the rotation speed of the flat spin but on ground adding more throttle typically did translate into more donut speed.

    If you guys try it again on the ice watch the speedo try keeping it at like 45 mph. The gyroscopic force from the high wheel speed is what makes it lift up like that I just try to ease into it like Doug did by the shop
