Many folks have asked me for more info on our truck so I've decided to do a blog post and video about "Big Baby Blue" our trusty old Ford Truck. It's only appropriate that Blue gets to be my 100th video on KZread as he has dragged out fifth wheel along on our many RVing adventures and done a dang fine job of it.

I have a 94 IDI also. Used to pull a 32 foot fifth wheel with it, had to put a big exhaust and a downpipe. Cold air intake. That's about it. Beautiful truck. Mine's of four by four with F450 added suspension. He is a stud.

Great truck! I was looking for a Dodge Cummins 12 valve or Ford IDI, because they have less electronics and are easy to repair on my own. I finally bought a 2nd gen Dodge Ram 3500 with a 12 valve Cummins with manual trans. But I would have bought an IDI like this too, if it was available.

I really like your truck. That classic Ford styling and reliability are hard to beat. I have a '99 F-350, with the International 7.3 liter Turbo Diesel. It's nice, but it's been used by previous owners a whole lot more than yours. Mine has 365,000 miles on it. The engine is still rock solid, but the rest of the truck needs some work. We just put about 1500 miles on it towing our Keystone Passport from Dallas to Terlingua and back. Looking forward to the time when we can hit the road full-time like you two. All the Best, and Happy Camping!

Nice, Terlingua is a neat town and area. Last spring we had to spend almost $3000 on our old truck. New mechanical injection pump, fuel lift pump, radiator adn hoses, rubber O rings on many fuel return lines, etc. but she is performing better than ever now and always gets us to our destinations and we put a lot of miles on it during our snowbird trips.

Hi Ray, I love it....My Father-in-Law retired from Ford, so I follow Ford Like a religion...nothing but Fords in our driveway. I pull my camper with a 2000 7.3...very reliable...everyone says the 7.3 International engine was the best Ford ever used! While it is loud like a pea thrasher, it pulls my camper through the mountains and to the coast. While I only pull 5000 lbs with that SWR, I never know its back there! I dont mind the noise at all, afterrall its a diesel, I dont need to spend 50-70 k to be pampered! Since its a SWR I use a sway bar, but have contemplated converting it into a dually if I ever step up to a fifth wheel! I have 6 more years till I retire and that 2000 7.3 will carry me around the nation! Dont ever get rid of that gem! All the best!

I like your truck, a good solid diesel, as you said previously about power output being the only difference vs. todays trucks, it is a good investment to stay with late model trucks for many reasons. There are some great buys on old body style Fords and as an example I had a chance recently to purchase a 97 dually 2wd custom, the guy only used it in the summer and only to haul a boat short distances, it was not modified at all $15,000 I already own a 97 Powerstroke I will not give it up. Anybody looking to full time it or use their Trailer often I would recomend looking into older trucks it saves the bankbook and I believe better mileges and reliability than todays trucks. My 2 cents. Thanks for the great blogs.

Powder River Thanks. Just had it looked at by a diesel engine shop. Told them to look it all over and let me know of any problems with the motor. They really couldn't find anything other than a loose clamp in the turbo causing a minor leak. They told me to hang on to the truck, said it was in great shape. It only has a 135,000 miles on her now so hope to get many more years. :)

I pissed off a-lot of people on the freeway only being able to go 45-55 mph on a 70 speed limit when towing about 8,000 lb trailer. Got about 6 mpg. Kept the truck and bought an ‘06 F250 6.0 diesel for towing and it is way better. I should have just dropped the money on a F250/350 7.3 diesel when I bought my first truck. They seem to last a long time and they perform very well.

That is a power stroke engine. yes, it is an IDI but they still put those motors in trucks now just with a different intake. The last motor they made right before the power stroke is the 7.7 IDI DIT. injectors, glo-plugs, and fuel injection lines are all underneath the valve covers. Ford only did that for one year '93-94'.

Yes, always, but I was towing a 10,000 lb fifth wheel out west in the mountains for about 8 years so it really worked hard. The IDI are kind of pigs power-wise and I was near its max towing capacity so it ran very hot climbing the steep mountain grades. After towing steep parts of i15 out of Phoenix to Flagstaff one day it started making a loud knocking noise and leaking oil from blowby pressure. Later I found out my clutch fan was weak so that made it run even hotter than normal likely led to the failure. Anyway, I sold it off and bought a new Cummins Ram in 2018, and man night and day better power and love the exhaust brake makes towing the fiver a breeze. Can go up any grade as fast as I'd like with no overheating at all. :) But cost a pretty penny.

Towing in the mountains or wind or if I try to push the speed above 60 MPH it falls to 8, If I keep the RPM around 2000 and speed about 55 with no wind and a good road I'll see 12. Not towing it can vary from 14 -18 MPG depending how heavy my foot is and the speed, again once over 2000 rpm the fuel efficiently suffers. It has a E4OD auto tranny with 4.10 rear end. Not the most fuel efficient beast but very reliable.

Michael Marchese The 6.7L PowerStroke is indeed 2011-present. The prototype was introduced in 2009. Not to mention, I worked for Ford at the time we introduced it. In 2015, the engine output was increased, and again for 2017, but the 6.7L was indeed introduced on the 2011 F-Super Duty trucks.

We still have the truck, has 175,000 miles now and we use it every winter to tow our 9500 lb fifth wheel from BC down to the US southwest and back. It can tow along at up to 70 MPH no problem on a flat highway with no winds. Add some strong headwind or 4% grades and that drops back tp around 50-55 top speed. Add 6-8% grade and it drops to around 35-40 MPH.

Greetings from the USA! My partner and I are planning to take early retirement in 2 years when I turn 62, sell the house, the stuff and the 'physical location' of our businesses and buy an RV. We're in debate about what type of RV to purchase and have been touring KZread watching videos from people like you in the hopes of settling the debate. He wants to blow the budget on a luxury Class A with a toad. I want to save the budget, camp sites aren't cheap and neither is maintenance, gas, tolls, etc, and go with a Class B+. Something pre-pwned is fine with me. Our kids, 2 lively Greyhound, just want 'their' sofa and I want an in unit washer/dryer [I do the laundry, usually at odd hours].. We just watched your video showcasing the truck. Neither of us has driven anything larger than each other's cars [BMW ragtop and SCion tC] and neither of us have experience driving or towing a house so there's much to learn. Thanks for the video, we've subscribed. Now on to find a video showcasing your Cougar. Do you and your wife full time?

  • @LoveYourRV

Yep we are full time for the last 3 years. Definitely you'll get more bang for your buck with a trailer versus a Class A but it is a personal choice with no right or wrong answer, everyone's lifestyle is different. For us a fifth wheel works out nice, but it is a pain sometimes to have such a large vehicle to run around in and explore with I have to admit. There are trade offs to every type and size of RV. Good Luck with your search. :) Cheers Ray

Seems to be a lot of info both ways when I research it. Here is a Wikipedia entry - "After the Agricultural Division sale in 1985, all that remained of IH was the Truck and Engine Divisions. The company changed its name in 1986 to Navistar International Corporation. (The International Harvester name and IH logo were assets of the Agricultural Division and consequently were part of the sale to Tenneco; the IH name and logo are still in use, having been incorporated into the Case IH brand name). In the early 1980s, IH developed a series of reliable large-displacement V8 diesel engines that were sold as an option for heavy-duty Ford 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickup trucks." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navistar_International

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    6 жыл бұрын

Depends on the exact setup of the truck and your trailer GVWR. Dry weight isn't the one to go by as that's the weight it comes out of the factory at, it will likely be 1500-2000 lbs heavier once it's all loaded up for camping. Look at the tag on the inside of the driver's door and see what the trucks GCWR is. That's the Gross Combined Weight Rating and is the max both the truck and trailer can weigh. For instance, my trucks GCWR is 20,000 lbs. I've weighed the combo at the scales and I'm 16.500 combined weight with the truck coming in at around 7000 lbs. So you may be very close to max weight. Which may be fine if you live where its flat like in FLA, but in the western Rockies I think the truck would struggle going up the steep hills. mine does and our trailer is only 9500 lbs. Dry weight rated at 7200 Cheers, Ray

The International Harvester IDI (from Indirect Injection) engine is a 4-stroke 8-cylinder Diesel engine used in International Harvester trucks, Ford F-Series pickups, and Ford E-Series vans from 1983 to 1994. The engine had two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 until 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1988 until 1994 (naturally aspirated) and in 1993 and 1994 (turbocharged) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Harvester_IDI

The NONtactiCOOL IDI means "Indirect Injection." In 1993-1994, Ford had an optional turbo for the IDI trucks. The exhaust was intentionally restrictive to give way to the up and coming PowerStroke, which had more power than its predecessor. But from '93-'94, these trucks came with an optional factory turbo.
