Same thing happened to me Martin. I have a Ssangyong musso . Excellent tow car . We got about 4 miles from the house just about to go on the motorway and the car whent into limp mode. Called green flag came out plugged in the reader identified the fault. Reset the car.they took my wife and caravan home.I drove to a Ssangyong dealership they done a update on the car then traveled back home picked up the the caravan nearly forgot the wife.then carried on with our holiday.all done within 3 hours. I used to love the split tailgate on the mk1 Kuga. It was great for maximising the boot space when packing for holidays. Can't believe they binned it! Got a 210PS Auto Ford Edge now, cracking car for towing.

Totally agree with you on the split tailgate. Don’t know why they stopped doing it. Had mine 3 years now and still love it and wouldn’t want to change for any thing I think it’s a really comfy drive.

Hi there I was very happy to come across your video as I'm currently having very similar problem with my 2013 2 litre TDCI AWD Kuga also. I Also have the larger engine. I have just bought my first caravan a few weeks ago. I live in Scotland but bought it in Chorley lol. I stayed at the Royal Umpire site for a few nights to try it out and all worked well and I learned a lot and was very happy and excited that I was going to enjoy caravanning. On the journey home. My car seemed to be towing well at first but then I reached a hilly stretch of motorway and I felt I needed to go down to 5th gear. What followed was very frightening. I couldn't seem to get it into gear and it made a horrible sound and I smelt burning. The car seemed to lose power very quickly. I actually thought it Was going to break down. I eventually got it into gear as the motorway became less steep and it started to drive and tow normally again. Some time later on my journey home it did the same thing again on a steeper stretch of motorway again but eventually settled down. My car seemed to go into limp home mode for a while too. Most people suggest it sounds like the clutch but I have had no problems with the clutch whatsoever when not towing. I bought my car about a year ago specifically with the intention of getting a caravan and now feel so sad and frustrated. I'm a single woman and enjoy watching videos such as yours and many others because I learn a lot. I'm now wondering if my car might have the same fault as yours had. I just want to know exactly what's wrong and how much it's going to cost me. Here's hoping I get to the bottom of it.

Hi, Welcome to caravanning. The issue with my car was the Diesel particulate filter sensor, (DPF) An engine malfunction light also appeared on the dash and it wouldn’t go over 50mph. If there is any fault with a kuga the computer automatically puts it in to limp mode. I took it to a diesel specialist and they did all the diagnostic stuff on it and found the faulty sensor. It cost £400 to get it sorted. They also told me that every now and then I should take the car for a run at high revs (3000rpm) for about 20 minuets to clear the filter. I would find a diesel specialist with diagnostic capabilities to run a full check on the car. Hope you manage to get it sorted, the Kuga is a good tow car when it’s working properly! The Caravan Nut Thanks Martin I will do that. I don't remember seeing a light but I did a system check shortly after and it came up as" all systems normal". Thanks for replying. Hope your enjoying your new caravan. I got a Bailey Pegasus GT65 Genoa and find it very spacious with good storage, shower etc.

hi there I also have a westfalia towbar .I drilled a small hole through the end of the lock cover and keep it tied to the towbar just in case it falls off.you only see it when the bar is attached.

A little surprised you didn't consider the Audi Q3/Q5. I have the SQ5 and it is absolutely superb for towing and comes with German engineering which is unequalled.

@@TheCaravanNut I appreciate Audi's are not the cheapest but with so many engine choices from 2.0ltr right up to 5.0ltr in both petrol and diesel, you get one hell of a car for the money. My SQ5 is "Quattro" (Four wheel drive) as is ALL "Q" range and with a V6 3.0ltr (404bhp) returning around 30mph towing and up to 45 running solo. You certainly get what you pay for!

Hi mate, great vid, I can only agree with you about the Kuga, we've just bought a 180ps Titanium sport and it's a brilliant tow car, much more economical, comfortable and quieter than our WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Hi Martin, Blimy, I thought you did not like extra work to tow a caravan, fitting that every time and the bike rack is one hell of start. The problem with almost all modern cars is the electronics and water is at the route of all. There is a way you can monitor all your electronics on the spot if you only knew how anywhere you go in the world. But why bother when there is no problem to fix. I use just one of my cars to tow with and the posh one to show off with.

Good info but have got to say I have a 2ltr mondeo towing my bailey pursuit 550 4 great tow car avg 30 mpg while towing and £20 per year tax!

Hi if you have started having PDF problems they will only continue. I have a ford kuga and started have PDF fault and engine management light warnings . I hand the PDF cleaned but 6mth later same issues came back but worse. I do a lot of motorway miles which you would think this would clean out filter as it gets to high temp to regenerate . It did and ended up have catastrophic problem had to get new PDF filter and new turbo. BE WARNED IT WILL COME BACK TO BITE YOU!

Hi, It was 2 years ago that I had the problem and it’s been fine since, hopefully it will stay that way! I have had a new alternator and coil spring this year but other than that no major problems. Thanks for info and watching 😊

Great honest vid, like to know you Torque? in newton metres please. (the reason? well I have also bought a tow car! an Hyundai IX35 2L. (NEVER heard about it before?) but got it. Liked what you say about your mpg. low 30's towing low 40's solo seems honest! ( my one is very new to me, so not accurate yet, but seems to be 29/30 towing (bit of a guess really only towed 70 miles with it? but did check with cars trip meter) and about 39 on longish run. Your stats and mine are crap really compared with cars? (or so I think) I was expecting much more like the ads with manufacturers ads 50+ info (never going to happen), but I like you, really like the car, (damn engineers cannot do their work properly?, thats a bit harsh but you know what I mean). You beat me with your horse power yours 163 mine 134. (do not know what is more important HP or Torque?). Anyway, these vids are allright (more than actually).

In terms of power the 163bhp produces around 320nm, basically it has a lot of grunt. The mpg is not great towing, in Devon at the moment and got about 28mpg with a strong head wind. Manufacturers do their mpg testing with everything taken out of the car!! Most importantly it tows well and does its job. 👍

Hi, shame about the attitude of Bristol St Motors. I had a similar incident with another garage and took them to small claims court and won. Vehicle “not fit for purpose.” Takes time though but start with citizen’s advice and demand compensation. The complication you have is that you are out of warranty by 2days! However, worth investigating to see if you are eligible to claim. These type of garages should not be allowed to get away with this sharp practice.

Roger Ferguson I did think about that but they would have won due to the 2 days out of warranty. it’s nearly 2 years ago now and the car has been fine. Repeat custom must make a big part of a dealerships revenue, I won’t be going there again! Thanks for watching.

The tow bar was about £450 supply & fit. It’s detachable and has vehicle specific wiring rather than standard electrics, which can be slightly dearer but worth it. The electrics have a lifetime guarantee. Worth shopping around for though. cheers

This is why I never buy Ford or Vauxhall cars, these types of faults are not few and far between, they are a very common occurrence in my experience with the afore mentioned manufacturers!.

Never had a problem on various Ford Mondeo’s, they use the same engines, though I did with a Peugeot 406 diesel years past losing power but not dpf. We’ve only had family, and friends, problems with German cars (Golf, Passat, A4 etc) whose diesels we now know are totally illegal toxic engines fraudulently made and sold between 2008-18 costing them $30Billion in fines in the USA when VW group was found out by their strict regulators.

The Caravan Nut Whoever said that is wrong. Peugeot worked with Ford in developing award winning TDCi engines with Ford putting in the bulk of the money and building them including the engines they supplied to Peugeot (and many other car makers including JLR) as the working contract was Ford had them first with Peugeot waiting 1 up to 2 years before they could use them! The petrol engines in BMWs Mini come from Peugeot though but they’ve tried to keep that one quiet. Wear and tear over the years whoever makes it brings some bills but hopefully reasonable ones and not stupidly very expensive charges. All the best.

The Caravan Nut thanks Martin I was hoping it was the lads at Thynne Street - had my timing belt done last October less than 400 miles later and driving along and yes the new belt comes off damage done - mechanic wouldn’t admit to anything so had the engine rebuilt and the engine fault garage light comes on every now and again so it looks like a trip to these guys then I can take my van out again without a worry 😊😊

you should have checked tinternet as any fault that develops within the first 6 months deems that it was developing before you bought the car and entitled to reject the car for a full refund or repair at their expense. .
