I’ve been with you since the refit, and thought I would miss the sailing days. I was wrong! It wasn’t the sailing that brought me to you, it was the two of you! Thanks for the interesting content!

My late Uncle's mom had 3 laying houses for chickens on their farm and she sold the eggs as a source of income, each of her coops had a pair of geese in them as protectors of that flock. She claimed to have never lost a laying hen to a predator with those geese watching her flonks. My Uncle had a short haired fox terror who would take on a Holstein bull and full grown Duroc hogs, both boars and sows, but geese got a wide avoidance when they were out in the yard.

Great job guys!! for the mushrooms, I would use wet sawdust that has been pasteurized and mix/bury the plugs into the wet sawdust, lay wet cardboard down, place the sawdust mix onto the cardboard and cover the sawdust with a tarp or builders plastic (not black) with about 2-3 inches elevated in the centre of the tarp to form a tent. Keeping it damp, just get a garden sprayer from Bunnings (the pressure pump type) and pull the cover back to mist the sawdust to keep it damp once to twice a week.This will create the damp environment for the mycelium to grow. Autumn is a far better time to start depending on what mushroom your trying to grow, along with early to mid spring

Have you used this technique? I'm wondering about pastuerising a big mess of sawdust. If you know of the successful culture of spent brewery grain for mycelium, that would be great.

Great confession. LOL .......I was always a little curious about your thoughts on the waste distribution from your water fowl but was hesitant to ask. Now I know. I should have warned you when you mentioned adding them to the farm but decided that you already had figured out how to benefit from their rapid and constantly working digestive system. For awhile I had an influx of wild ducks and geese visiting my pond but as I was already aware of their very messy habits I continuously kept chasing them away until they finally, about two seasons, decided to scratch me off their list of visits. A couple of my grandchildren loved seeing them on the pond and didn't understand why I didn't want them until I took them over to a neighbor's pond that they were still visiting and had them walk around it. When they got back to me I asked what they noticed and their answer was that there was way too much POO on the banks to enjoy the walk. Suddenly they understood. I never had guinea hens but pea cocks next door were certainly noisy. I've never tried growing mushrooms either. I don't trust myself to know the good ones from the bad ones. At any rate it appears that you have learned from your mistakes and that's the important thing. Enjoyable video, thanks for posting.

I will never Farm or Homestead, so I do this through you three, and Failures? I only saw learning opportunities! Every piece of land is different, what works at one home may not work next door, unless you try, you'll never know.

For almost 20 years I managed a Primary school farm and I loved ducks so I introduced ducks early on. I had the same issue as you guys. Ducks fouled up the kids play areas, would get in with the chickens and foul their water and food troughs. Got into the hay shed and made a mess of that. Our gardener cut down a heap of cuttings with seeds and fed them to the chickens. The chickens could eat them but the ducks got so drunk from the seeds most of them died. So I took that as the opportunity to give away the 2 or 3 we had left and never got them again. Our pigs would eat our ducks occasionally too. The chooks would try stealing pig food and they were quick enough to avoid a pig snout but the ducks were slow and occasionally a pig would grab one and eat it.

We live in Alaska, no extra cats in Our neighborhood, My Wife is Thai , She loves cats, stir fried with vegetables.

Loved the sailing days, didn't think I would follow homestead, I do because you're so honest & transparent. (Reminds me of my home growing up..Dad had all of the Foxfire books) I'm still prepping my sailboat for long journeys, although a home base would be excellent too. Be well.

Fails or lessons, sometimes the answer is no. After a lifetime of technical work sometimes at a high level I have moved on to a lifestyle block as we transition to retirement, wins for me have been chickens and grazing beef. Our gardens were so productive also so much so that I provided nearly half a ton of produce to our community sharing table. I am downsizing mine this coming year too, well we shall see at least, still a while off planting :)

Well this only means you need to try raising large monster birds like ostrich, to make extra sure fowl isn't right for you both.. Joking aside, pheasant and quail maybe?

That cow better keep out of the neighbours dam. It'll be in the freezer before Christmas. lol. cheers.

Good reading for you is ‘The Egg and I’, about a couple who raised chooks inOregon, I think it was. So it was about the trials and tribulations. They had as neighbours Ma and Pa Kettle, who were so funny that Hollywood made a movie about them.

Actually in Washington. There is an organic hog farm near there now feeding with hazelnuts

Cleaning up some of our past endeavours this weekend, one thing I didn’t factor into costs is tip fees/dump charges on chicken tractors FREE things we’ve collected. Best way to learn is to do. Enjoying this series.

Sailing is easier.. lols.. My parents wanted the life of "living off the land". we had chooks, ducks geese, turkeys, guinea's and pidgeons, pigs and Goats and rabbits. Fruit orchard and vege garden.. It takes a lot of work.. 24/7 just never ends.. I failed to see the "romantic side of it" as a kid.. still fail today.. lols.. Your Birds, smell water. they can smell its quailty also.. you had no hope of keeping them home. Been watching on and off for a long time now. All the best with the farming endeavours.. "Don't work too hard"..

Im surprised that eucalyptus is recommended. The oil tends to suppress other species. Would be interesting to inoculate another type of wood next to eucalyptus and see if there is any difference

Calling these experiences “fails” is a little hard on yourselves. You tried things, didn’t see it work, changed course. I reckon that’s pretty sensible. Your little farm is amazing and what you have achieved in a short time frame is wonderful. Thanks for producing such great vids.

Great info guys. Still a big fan after many years now. I got into your sailing channel after growing up on a Clansman in Sydney and surrounds. Great boat to learn on. Greeting again from Auckland.

What abut the tool for compressing compost/soil into seed pods? I bought one and my 'pods' disintegrated at the first drop of water. I think a once a month tour of the whole homestead, covering the animals, paddocks veg patch etc, would be good.

Works well for us, though we do pack it well and experiment a bit with mixes.

I've got about 30 years on you and have made all those same mistakes (and many more). Don't worry, you've still got plenty more ahead of you...

Care to try your luck with Ostrich or Emu? They do tend to aggressive though. Duck eggs are delicious. Maybe your neighbors would be open to letting you transplant some redds and the like to your reservoir and try the ducks again.

You’ve become middle aged. It happens.

Don't say anything if you haven't got something nice to say. Well how the hell can I get around that? Being old and grumpy at 69 I've watched you from basically the beginning doing something I have never done either has the majority of the population of the world ever done living on a sailboat making ends meet. But then one day after being so successful financially with KZread you buy a farm something most everyone on the planet has done and have worked their ***** off to get to the inner city so they don't have to farm having a nine to five job. Well I don't know what to say. I have ducks I've had Guineas I've had chickens I've had cows I've had pigs I've had ostriches I've had emus I've had dogs of every breed I've had horses I've had four children that have grown and gone. I can surely understand these new adventures of ducks and whatever gardening pig or what have you adventure that you have never done before is exciting for you. And good for you I'm glad for you to be off the sailboat and on the solid ground and even had a child well welcome to the real world but I've been there done that and it's just as well we part friends. I will thank you for your adventures on the ocean the place I have not been but always wanted to, and leave you with your duck adventures = ( a floating chicken that poops too much for its size )... And go back the way I was before you had ever known me. Good luck to you
