Our System Is Corroded: Carol Anderson on Rampant Police Violence and Assault on Voting Rights

On Thursday, disturbing new details were revealed in the case of Ahmaud Arbery, the 25-year-old Black man who was chased, ambushed and shot dead by a group of white men in Georgia in what many have called a modern-day lynching. In a nearly seven-hour hearing, a state judge concluded all three men - Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan - would stand trial for Arbery's murder, after special agent Richard Dial of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation testified Travis McMichael said "f-ing n-" after shooting and killing Arbery. We speak with professor Carol Anderson, author of "White Rage," about Arbery's slaying, the nationwide protests, anti-lynching legislation being debated in the Senate and the upcoming election.

Black police cannot get the same level of advocacy in the police unions as white officers. They are getting shot or having "near misses" in the field from white officers. A black cop in Baltimore was murdered a day before he was to testify to the grand jury against a rouge white cop! The rabbit hole is deep! Black people need to rethink joining the military and becoming law enforcement officers. Ijs

In 1959, Whites use to thrown bricks in our living room every night in Chicago, Ill. My father carried me in his arm turning the lights off upstairs and downstairs. I finally ask why was he turning the lights off. He calmly told me that we were going to the basement to sleep because whites are were going to start throwing bricks, etc.,through our windows. We would have dinner early. I noticed my Mother gathering A basket of Snacks, blankets, and Pillows, and Candles. It was the Police throwing the bricks, so it was joke to call the police on themsrlves.

When I go to vote, I tell them my name and address and they cross me off a list of people eligible to vote in my electorate. They don’t even ask for ID. The list is thick like a ‘phonebook but better quality paper. We only use paper ballots and I usually take a “how to vote” leaflet from a Greens Party volunteer on my way into the voting area, which for me is a local school hall. We use preferential voting here which entails writing a number “1” in a box next to my most preferred candidate and - if say, four candidates are competing for the seat in my electorate - a number “4” next to my least preferred candidate, which is usually one of those scumbags like Rand or McConnell. I‘d probably write a number “2” people’s party candidate and a “3” next to a socialist party candidate if these were running. But I would usually (though not always) vote as advised by my preferred candidate’s party (the Greens).

hugs and prayers to you Dr Carol for having to relieve and find the grammar to communicate. I am in tears just receiving the information, and every time I uncover horrific truths. I know you are too, but your courage is now on youtube for generations unborn to see, before we didn't have it. only consolation I can offer you my sister, and of course to take every word you deliver as necessary informative over arching truth.

As regards the section on the anti-lynching law, I'm actually glad it was blocked, as I was under the understanding that murder was already prohibited. While vile motives such as racial hatred should certainly be a factor in the sentencing, having a special law to enshrine blacks as a special, protected caste will only alienate yet more people.
