Our Spooky Universe with Paul Sutter

Ғылым және технология

The Most Unsettling Things in our Universe are all real and part of the dangers of outer space. Can you survive crossing the event horizon of a black hole? Or will spaghettification get you?
How to Die in Space: A Journey Through Dangerous Astrophysical Phenomena by Paul M. Sutter is a book that delves deep into the many unsettling aspects to space and our universe.

Mass Effect's Reapers possibly being a thing. I want to see humanity become stewards of the Earth and stars but machine civilizations not born - hopefully intentionally and evolutionarily speaking - from OUR civilization are a huge unknown unknown. I have hope that we evolve into the best versions of ourselves when we shed traditional biology or incorporate technology more into ourselves. Alien robots might treat sentient life like we treat ants or worse, they act like ants and have the morality of ants themselves.

6:30, hes talking about Joseph Kittingers space jump from 1960 from over 102,000ft but in 1962 pyotr Dolgov tried to jump from 94,000ft but as he exited he smacked his visir on the gondola. the suit depressurized and he died. 1966 did the NASA astronaut Nick Piantanida the same tests, but after a failure of the mask, he was left severely brain damaged and died later. so there has been several accidents, when depressurization led to death... but the glove was kittinger, he didnt call it out to ground control, since he didnt wanted to abort...

Kittinger was coach for Felix Baumgartner's more recent free-fall, but Kittinger's record still stands.. Let's face it, the leak only lead to a localised reduction in pressure, his hand was not subject to total vacuum. If we experience total vacuum, it's a simple and quick death: the liquid in our body will boil instantly. I strongly disagree with Paul Sutter's assertion that we could recover from a brief exposure to vacuum. He has no evidence for this. Physics says we will boil.

5:58 Space suits usually pressurise to around 4.3 psi, well below sea level pressure of 14.7 psi. Near pure oxygen is breathed, that way even though the total pressure is low the oxygen partial pressure is roughly the same as normal air at 14.7 psi. If the suit was pressurised to 14.7 psi it would be impossible to move or bend.

@@agentx7138 Have you noticed on clips from the ISS that prior to donning their suits to go outside the astronauts spend half an hour or more pre breathing pure oxygen to purge the nitrogen from their blood. This is so they don’t get the bends while spending many ours in the low pressure environment of the suit. Forgive me if I’m telling you something you already know. Also have you noticed how plain ugly NASA’s proposed moon suit is. All so they can move freely rather than hop like the Apollo guys did. The solution is a suit at higher pressure, with movements assisted by some sort of smart fabric in the suit. The suits movements being controlled by a Neuralink chip implanted in the brain of the user. You think l should give NASA and Elon Musk a call to tell them about my idea?

Jerome "Jay" Apt - former Space Shuttle astronaut and current professor at Carnegie Mellon - also had an incident where the rigid palm bar on his right glove had punctured a hole in the glove - fortunately, the flesh of his hand ended up sealing the glove, and he didn't even realize that there was a hole in it until he came back to Earth and the glove was inspected by ground crew - though he did feel that there was a rigid object cutting into his hand. He still has a scar on his palm he shows when he talks about that incident.

Starting at 33:50 I find it interesting that he states you must go forward in time, and analogously, once you are inside the event horizon you must go toward the singularity. Since space and time are actually the same thing, maybe that means we are inside a "time" black hole, since we only have one time direction - toward the future.

14:00 I'm more worried about the door seal on a microwave oven than the metal mesh of the window. Because the mesh will block frequencies up to the point where the holes become about 1/4 wavelength, then they block less and less well. The door seal, on the other hand, is not in metal to metal contact. It relies on being 1/4 wavelength long at the frequency of the magnetron. It looks like an open waveguide, and after 1/4 wavelength an open waveguide reflects back as a short. So it is more effective than an imperfect metal to metal joint, because it is relatively undisturbed by contaminants. However, very far outside that frequency, that open waveguide allows just about everything in, above and below frequency.

@Dr. Jimmy_Rustle that doc was excellent. And what a dude, watching the film of him leaping of the gondola was amazing. But your right his hand must have been agony but he got the record and lots of scientific data that helped the space flights

It's not the lack of O2 that kills you, It's the build-up of CO2. You breathe out almost the same O2 that you breathe in (21% in vs 16% out). However, you breathe in 0.4%, but out 10x, at 4%.) So it's an acid-base imbalance that kills you. Also, space suits are 0.3 Atm, not 1 Atm. Just to get some details corrected 👌

Anyone know what the music is right at the end. The playlist doesn't seem to list it. It only lasts 15 second s but it's really good and I'm sure I've heard it somewhere before

IIRC, one of (possibly the) our earliest encounters with humans in (near) vacuum was when an experimental vacuum chamber (for training astros, testing suits, etc.) was test-depressurised without checking if there was someone inside it without a suit. They re-pressurised quickly when they realized and there were no long-term ill effects on the de-pressurised one. Again IIRC, which I may not.
