Our Roots Podcast: Isese with Chief Solagbade Popoola

Ойын-сауық

Our Roots Podcast: Isese with Chief Solagbade Popoola (ep.1)
Isese is the way Ifa is practiced in Nigeria as well as many other places. With so many different ways of practicing Ifa, people want to know as much as they can before choosing which tradition they’re moving forward with. Our Roots Podcast had the privilege of interviewing possibly the most notable man in Ifa, Chief Solagbade Popoola. By his side was his premier disciple, Jose Rodriguez “Agboola”, where they discussed different aspects of their school of practice. Some of the key topics addressed were, Babalawo’s and trance, Ifa priests in the room of Orisa, and the concept of Orisa Alagbatori. Don’t miss the Ifa interview of the year!

25 years ago I roamed the streets of Philadelphia looking for a competent babalawo. Today, they appear on my smartphone. The trouble now is learning how to discern the hucksters from the highly qualified. This problem will be with us for some time and probably will increase. Your channel helps immensely. It helps to recall stories that show Orunmila is often portrayed in difficult times of poverty, having to hock his divination instruments, and enemies trying to kill him. I look forward to reviewing your videos and future work. Thank you.

It is so weird listening to him describe the traditional practice when it comes to initiating in Ocha when all my life I have been part of Lucumi and Ifa Criollo. I like how he mentions there should be no competition and how he mentions that different is not always wrong. Big problem in modern day IFA is negative criticism from one Awo to another. Ogunda Masa says "the strength comes from unity" the more united the awos are the stronger IFA will be. Thank you for this interview. Iboru iboya iboshishe Awo Orunmila Oyekun Bara Ifa Lade

Ashe. It is more necessary these days to have more and more people who clearly continue to repeat that ALL Ifa practices work, whether they are from Dahomey (Togo/Benin/Ghana), Nigeria or Lukumi. ALl the lineages have their particularities and medicines and all of them have effective ethical codes of Ifa. As long as elders from each side respect each other and teach their godchildren to respect, conflicts should not arise.

A good son (and daughter )is loved by Olódùmáre and his mother. There is no prayer more powerful than that of a mother for her son (daughter). I met Chief in 1993 when accompanying an ex for his itefa. The meeting was in connection to the publication of Orunmila Youngsters, not his initiatory awos. Many years later I was fortunate to meet him again in Philadelphia and my daughter and myself received Egbe and Ori. Agboola was there. There was a lecture on the role of women in Ifa held at the Ile Oṣun Temple on Mascher St. The awo’s story of his wife conceiving brought tears. My respect for Chief is solid.

I was very lucky to have been introduced to Baba Adebolu Fatunmise many years ago. I had a reading in a hut in his back yard. There were about 7 or 8 Babalawos present. I never felt such love and compassion. A few year later. Baba saved the life of my oldest daughter. She was born prematurly. She weighed 2lbs 6oz. She was in a incubater and not gaining weight. Baba went to Ifa who said her Odu was Oshun! He sent me a black powder to rub on her tiny feet. She quickly started gaining weight. Today she is s beautifil woman. Praise Ifa! Praise Orisha. Praise the Babalawo!

Great podcast. Indeed, Iṣeṣe is a different practice. In Yorubaland, the general custom is for children to do Ifa (itefa) at a young age. This, of course, does NOT mean you are a Babalawo. In Yorubaland, initiation, alone, doesn’t give you the title of “Babalawo” or “Iyanifa.” Those are titles that are earned when you complete your training and after your graduation ceremony. But normally, you initiate from the beginning so that you learn everything there is to know so you can practice competently. You cannot, for example, enter igbodu to learn the process of Itefa unless you are initiated.

No, thats not exactly true, rewind to 7:30 Many people study Ifa for years in Yorubaland long before doing initiation. You are correct they cannot enter igbódù, but omo awo can learn and study and observe most of what their Oluwo does

According to the Creation story that POpoola released, Akamara is the creator energy or God. Olodumare is the deity that controls the solar system (if I understood correctly). Of course, this is an Isese concept. In the Lukumi tradition, for us, Olodumare is the creator or God.

45:00 can someone in the Ifa, Lukumi, Santeria community explain what happens where mothers are not supportive of their children. I ask because we are living in a dysfunctional society. Mothers are not mothers. What then happens to the child? Who will defend the child if the mother is the enemy?

Lukumi Ifa conceives of all possibilities in life, including, situations where families are dysfunctional. In fact, I believe Odu Okana ROso speaks about the negative consequences for the child if the mother is the subject of pain and suffering. Odu Osa Di, speaks of marriages and family structures that are fighting and the children are in the middle. Obara Trupon and Ogbe Di, may speak about children who have been sexually traumatized. Iroso Turale, speaks on the curses of elders of the child, which may be the mother of a person. So, these are realities of life. Of course, Orunmila looks down upon those behaviors because they are harmful and anything that is harmful, does not receive approval from Ifa. Now, in case of what Ifa, in the Lukumi tradition, would recommend, Ifa would counsel the elders that take of this child, to protect them from the traumas and abuses that may be coming from an unfit mother. And the child should receive divination and Ebo to help them, including any relevant Ebo Ori that is required to assist them in stabilizing any trauma aspects. Now, obviously, not everything is resolved with Ifa. If a child is under the abuse of the mother, the relevant family and state-organizations must become involved to protect the welfare of the child.
