Rainie was so good on this ep. She asked so many good questions. There’s this thing where she will ask a really insightful question thats pretty personal and the other person will think for a second and look like they genuinely haven’t been asked that question before and are really grateful to get an opportunity to talk about it and will speak in a different, more grounded tone. She does this often with Miles or Zach or Keith and other guests on the trypod and it’s so cool. Just takes a lot of tact and talent to be able to ask questions that will get a very real response from someone without making them uncomfortable and she has perfected this skill. She is such a good interviewer and can go between lightheartedly asking about fungi to asking how Hank approached communicating with his kid about cancer. And it’s never uncomfortable or jarring. It’s like every question she asks is so good at judging the vibe and playing off of it or switching things up and refreshing the conversation. Idk I think she could have a future doing her own interview podcast or be on npr or something idk. I honestly think she is better at interviewing people than the celebrities on most of the big podcasts in that genre.

@@masonanderson9378 Thank you that is a kind thing to say. I don’t know her in real life so that whole paragraph probably sounded quite presumptuous. I try not to get too parasocial and remember that this is somebody’s job and I only know the version of themselves they present to the internet. I just really respect her and think she is very talented based on her work on the Trypod and Perfect Person. Getting to see Miles go from a short segment at the end of the show to talking more to starting his own podcast and it growing successful and then going independent and returning to the pod as a freelancer over the past couple years was awesome. Both him and Rainie are so funny and good at their jobs and I look forward to seeing her grow on this platform or in whatever else she decides to do.

@@FB776875 Yes! I think the first time I started properly noticing this was on an episode a couple months ago with Keith and Miles. I think that's what fact off on sci show tangents is for 😂
Regarding sharks and alligators, alligators are fine in brackish water and bull sharks have been found ASTONISHINGLY far up river, beyond what would even be considered brackish. So they’ve almost certainly met. As a former Floridian who lived at the junction of a river and the Gulf of Mexico, I would definitely keep an eye out for both in brackish water.

the way hank strung dinosaur and canada together and immediately knew it was alberta 😭 then the picture came up and i went omg i’ve seen it!!!
32:40 what Hank is talking about here is a really REALLY well preserved Nodasaurus, a type of ankylosaur, that was found in Fort McMurray (oil and gas mining, like the main place) in Alberta Canada. It is 110 million years old, the oldest ever found in Alberta. It is currently on display at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, which is the dinosaur capital of the world. It’s so well preserved they could see microscopic red pigments on it, it’s really cool to look into if you like dinosaurs and old stuff

I aggressively paused the video at 38:40 because DAMN, ZACH, I wanna commend you for understanding that evolution is the process of change, and that can happen through different mechanisms, namely natural selection or artificial selection. I've taught ecology and evolution for a bit, and some people still struggle to grasp it, and you said it so FLAWLESSLY that I screamed with joy. The phenomenon of one gene controlling the outcome of a bunch of other visible traits that Zach is getting so excited about is pleiotropy. I feel like his excitement and awe over this concept is so relatable, it's why I got really interested in studying evolution and ecology. This was a great episode of the pod. All the questions they're asking Hank remind me of when I get together with my old friends and, inevitably, they start to pick my brain about stuff like this. It's such a fun way to bond and share knowledge without anyone having to feel bad about what they do or do not know. Delightful. BTW, they not only bred out the agreeable/domestic line of foxes in that experiment (it's still ongoing!), they also did the same with the ultra aggressive line of foxes. Two totally divergent temperaments/personality types from the same recent ancestors. It's so cool! I've heard Lee Dugatkin, the coauthor of How to Tame a Fox (the popular science book on the experiment) with Lyudmila Trut, give a talk about the project as an invited speaker some years ago. Lyudmila Trut was Belyayev's graduate student that helped set up and run the experiment, and she is the reason the experiment still lives after the death of her advisor. He still gets name credit to the experiment, but imo Lyudmila Trut is the real hero of that long term study.
Hank has the core values of what it takes to be a good teacher or leader, “I make things for people, not for myself.” Goal is the information and the creativity comes from how to communicate it.
RE Shoes: I had to go to the ER in a city several thousand miles away from my home & the guy who checked me in ran after me as they were whisking me away and said 'Hey are those Solovairs?' And I got super excited and we had fun bonding moment at 3am while I also thought I might be having a stroke. Thanks shoe guy, you made my night a little less scary but a lot more surreal.

Relevant fact Hank may not know based on how he talks about motivation around 55:00. According to the 4G model of motivation (Forgeard & Mecklenberg, 2013, there are four main reasons that we do things: Gain, Growth, Giving, and Guidance. The first two refer to internally directed motivations (to gain something for yourself or to personally grow in some way). Meanwhile, giving and guidance refer to externally directed motivations (to help others to gain and grow, respectively). So based on what he’s saying, it sounds like guidance is Hank’s primary motivator.
Hank is immaculate I love this episode

I loved Rainie’s questions so much! So happy she got to meet Hank Green and ask really fun and interesting questions. She’s really a highlight of pods for me
Sharks and alligators have DEFINITELY met. Not even because alligators can and do go into brackish water, but because some sharks can and do go into freshwater. For example, bull sharks have infamously been found in the Mississippi river before. I'm sure it's very infrequent, so they wouldn't like, know what to make of each other, but there's no way it's never happened.
The British accent returns....much to John's dismay
