I am 70. When I was a little girl we had a local cobbler. He would let you watch him as he worked. The place smelled of high quality leather and wood. The cobbler was from italy although he spoke Italian and English. I loved watching all the details. I remember taking our families good shoes and leather purses for repairs. Soles, half soles and heels were usual. My moms high heels were always needing heel tips and sometimes dying. He repaired my and my sisters’ tap shoes and our ballet slippers & toe shoes. Many years later my saddle shop smelled similarly. These artisans show you why expensive shoes cost what they do.

My Daddy was a cobbler. He was a master of his trade. Nothing yet asvtoo much trouble, a gentle unassuming soul. He always had a mouth full of nails, grubby hands that were black from the dyes and stuff that he used. As long as he had his radio on and a full thermos he was a happy man. He retired due to ill health but built a shed out the back of the house and transfered all his tools from the shop. He tinkered for years until he passed. I have 3 brothers who didnt show any interest in the trade. My memories live with me, the sticky stuff highs and the tapping of the hammer, I miss him. Your one special man, continued success❤

My mother would take the car on Saturday and she and I would sit in the shop while the cobbler did his work. It was all so fascinating with hammers, grinders and polishers. During the ride home I would sit in the car marveling at my new soles and heels. Thanks for reminding how much I enjoyed visiting the cobbler over a half century ago.

@@imaloose you know, i kinda thought that as well until i started watching some shoe videos that dive into the make up of the shoes and why they're so pricey. For some like say the Indy boot from Alton, that's capitalizing on the name but others like say White's boots are using top of the line leather all through-out the boot, including the inner sole and lining which as you know, would make the shoe entirely waterproof. And not all leather is priced the same, etc etc. It adds up very quickly and you saw how much work it took him just to repair a shoe, let alone make one from scratch. Cheers. In the future (once Covid relaxes) we need to get Dan from Tring shoe repair & key shop, paired with Trenton & Heath (whom I follow on KZread & Instagram) for a collaborative shoe or boot video. The views & subscribers would skyrocket. Huge fan of theirs.

My dad delivered the shoe repair parts to many shoe repair stores. I remember going with him some times. This was in the 1980s. It was a dying industry then with stores like Payless and the cheap shoes they sold. This was great to see someone still doing this art. Thank you for showing up in my recommended videos. Brings back good memories.

The toe plate keeps the toe of your shoes from getting worn down faster than the rest of the sole. A less bespoke option are what are called "taps," which are little pieces of plastic that can be nailed to the toes and/or heels of your shoes.

What a load of old cobblers. I bet you never tire of hearing that one 😂 Seriously though, it’s nice to see the pride you take in your craft, and using traditional, international skills - I also learned that a cobbler repairs shoes, and a Cordwainer is the person who actually makes them from new leather - very therapeutic to watch, and worth every penny of the repair. Not that I could afford to buy shoes costing only the repair fee, let alone the full price for a new pair of those shoes! I watched a Japanese Cordwainer yesterday, (another random suggestion from KZread) except this one was totally captivating - he was making leather brogues from scratch- it was incredible to see the amount of work that goes into handmade leather shoes, and also, the craftsmanship and dedication required to produce them was astounding! I can’t believe I’m raving about shoes?? Men don’t rave about shoes…. 🤷‍♂️ I’ve never waffled on like a broken chicken about shoes, turns out I could actually be a potential shoe geek! Anyway, fine job, I’m sure the customer was extremely happy with your work. I’m glad I found your site - you have a new subscriber, but please don’t tell anyone 😂
