    Maintenance and upgrades: Ideally a thermostat upgrade so it opens at lower temperature. Always let it warm up all the way before ripping it. Blip the throttle as you turn it off to avoid flooding. High power starter recommended. I'd suggest changing the engine coils right away as those seem to go bad around 80k kilometers. Check engine oil all the time and do oil changes about 1.5 to twice as often as you would with other vehicles. Conventional oil only unless you block off the OMP and go full premix only. Premix: 8-10 ml per liter depending on how hard you're going to drive. -- And most importantly, it's healthy for the engine to beat the hell out of it. Rotaries are way happier closer to redline and revving it over 6k opens the secondary throttle body actuators, preventing carbon buildup in the engine. As we rotary folks say, "A redline a day keeps the carbon away."

  • @TheMoffBoy

    @TheMoffBoy

    No point blocking the OMP, either leave it in place and run premix too, or convert to a SOHN adapter, in which case you could still premix if you are abusing the car. Sounds like its probably already low on compression judging by that startup. The VDI, SSV and Aux valves open at different points, all of which get naffed up by high temps on the solenoids, particularly the VDI one which is on the bottom of the stack.

    Do not touch the throttle whilst starting (you will flood the engine) Get uprated coils and plugs-RRP coils- d585 coils Premix is a very well talked about subject with a split decision of do and don’t! Let it warm up before driving hard and let cool down? Like most cars

    Rotary life is a joy... can be very reliable, it's the plumbs who treat them as a standard car that cause the issues, changing gear at 4k and doing 2 mile journeys, then complaining it wont start! They limit at just over 9k, they don't start pulling till 6k with the 231bhp version. Premixing isn't as essential on the 8's as the metering pump is a stepper motor, so any issues it will flag up on the dash and drop in to limp mode. They need to be redlined every outing, but on track this won't be an issue, rev up to 3k and hold it there for a moment before you switch it off, as this sweeps the housing of any fuel so everything is clean for start up (no flooding) and a slight bit of throttle when starting! Stock LSD will overheat and fail very quickly drifting, so weld it if it's not been done yet, and have plenty of fuel.... on the Pembrey small track we did a full tank and 2 jerry cans, and killed 20 part warn tyres in a day (think the lowest tread was 4mm.) could do with cut knuckles for more lock, but clearance on the arms is tight on wide wheels so might be worth dropping down in width from the 5Zigen. Also if you drop below 5k it will just keep dropping, get it above 6 and it will spin to 9k ;)

    Since you asked. The trick to rotaries is to drive them hard after they've warmed up. The engines love high RPMs. It's actually one way to help them last longer as it decreases carbon build up. Carbon build up is what usually takes out the apex seals. Premixing (adding 2 cycle oil) to the fuel during fill up helps lube the apex seals and protects both apex seals and wall housing from premature wear. 3rd thing is always check the oil and keep it topped off. The rotary engine burn oil by design. As it injects oil into the combustion chamber to lube the apex seals. If you premix well enough, you can mod the engine to bypass using engine oil for this. That's basically it for longer engine life in rotaries and specifically the RX-8's Renesis 13b. Adding a Turbo introduces problems that will vastly shorten engine life if the rotors and specifically the apex seals aren't re-enforced to handle the additional pressure. This is all information I learned from owning one and the shop Rotary Performance gave me as they work on and tune my RX-8.

    Dont usually comment, but I have one of these, if its struggling to start hold pedal straight to the floor while turning over the engine and it will cut the fuel to the engine to let it cycle the petrol and oil out of housing. Then lift pedal slowly to start fuel flow 🤙🏼

    it really depends on what the previous owner did to the engine. If they did the proper upkeep. They last quite a long time if doing the proper maintenance. I got over 144k miles on mine (original engine) as the second owner before my compression failed. Getting new engine now that I will be maintaining correctly from the beginning. That said, 144k miles on a "supposedly" unreliable engine is pretty good in direct comparison to some other engines that can fail at about the same mileage. For reference, the rotary engine lasted much longer than the engine in my previous car 2nd gen Eclipse.

    Keep on top of the oil level, they are designed to burn “crankcase” oil (unless you delete the OMP) so need regular top ups, also regular oil changes. I would say run a bit of premix just for a bit of extra safety and keep a close eye on temps, heat is one of the big killers of rotaries. Since you are going to be beating on it a lot I would say probably put a bigger rad in it, some good fans, and maybe some duct work. As long as you warm it up properly, keep on top of maintenance fluids, etc. and take good care of it, it should treat you well.

    Tips for the 8 that might help,. Get a larger battery with more cca and boot mount it, it will free up engine bay space and help cooling as at the moment the battery is sitting on the rad. When you run the new battery wires, bring the positive straight to the starter and then to the fuse box. This will help cranking speed and hide low compression problems. You should not need to rev it before turning it off. I think I use to run about 250ml of premix to a tank, may need to check that tho. Put a catch can in the vac line going to the intake from the top of the oil filler body. These cars have a tendency to burp and cover your mad in oil. You will probably need to have a look at the diff at some point. The "super lsd's" have a habit of cracking and becoming inconsistent.

  • @Jason-hl2wy
    @Jason-hl2wy3 жыл бұрын

    Had mine for 4 years now and it's quite simple. Boils down to premix , letting it warm up before ripping on it ( super important), a good ignition system, making sure cooling system works properly and decat if possible. Mine has been more reliable than the BMWs and VWs in my household. Also unless the engine is ported, the start up at 13:22 may indicate that compression is getting low , if starter and ignition are good or if the car is not flooded

    the rx8 is frankly a perfect fun car for a car guy I mean you can fit 4 adults over 6 feet tall (182+ cm) insurance companies price it very cheaply since its technically a 1.3 saloon, can get you 30 mpg if you are really trying and being efficient, can last you over 130K miles providing you bought a decent one and take good care of it and start as cheap as 800 euros for a decent one more people should actually consider it for a first car as I am about to get one for my first car. *oh and of course it has a rotary engine how could you forget*

    also now thinking about it the slow and struggling start is caused by the ignition system and the starter and as for maintenance oil changes after each track day and topping it up regularly. you can run premix to provide more lubrication and since you have a cat delete there is no damage to be caused and that only provides an extra layer of saftey

    Premix 100ml per full tank id go for motul 800 pre mix. Change the oil and filter before and after track day and use 15w40 mineral oil, don't overfill or you will get oil burp and could potentially blow the engine. Keep and eye on heat temps when your on track and you should be grand. 😁

If your engine ever does flood, turn the car on with your foot all the way down the accelerator and itll turn over with the absence of gas and will deflood. Also, if the cat is out, premix one ounce of 2 stroke with one gallon of gas(dont know the conversion to Liters.) If you still have the cat, remove it

    I think you should get a compression check done to find out, but if it has decent compression you could get a lot out of it. A hard to start engine doesn't necessarily mean low compression. Rotaries love to be revved and driven hard, more than piston engines and will clean out the carbon build up that causes seal wear. I'm currently building an FD drift car, and I've had my 2010 RX8 R3 for 6 years and put 55k miles on it. I'm about to hit 100k miles. Definitely make sure you have upgraded ignition. Either IGN-1A or the Black Halo Racing kit. A bad coil will cause hard starts and power loss without the car driving or idling rough so it's tough to tell unless you know how it drives normally. I've been through replacing a bad coil 3 different times now, even with GM coils. It's tough on coils because of the much shorter charge duration, so they build up more heat.

    From the sound of her while starting, I think your main rotor bearings might be sloppy enough to reduce compression. Since it's a Series 1, I'd suggest modifying or replacing the oil pressure regulators with higher pressure regulators, which will help you preserve the remaining bearings better. I'd also strongly recommend you replace the plastic coolant tank, as that part can fail without warning, and your engine will die very shortly afterward (personal experience). I'd also recommend Evans waterless coolant, for better peak temperature control around the exhaust ports and spark plugs (again, personal experience). Definitely upgrade the ignition coils, or, at a minimum, get the latest iteration (the original mid 2003 production for the 2004 model year are only good for about 40,000Km; but they got better - I personally use D585 coils that have been on the car without issue since the original coils failed). Replace the Series 1 starter with eh Series 2 version. What did you use to unseize the coilovers?

    I run a 2004 RX8 231bhp and have had about a dozen practice days out of it so far and nothing has gone wrong yet, they do need looking after and some TLC to keep them reliable though. They cheap to buy but pricey to run, the oil and fuel consumption is terrible, aftermarket parts to make them more driftable are thin on the ground and a ridiculous price compared to an E36/46 for instance. But they can be bought cheap, mine came with the cat which was worth more than I paid for the car when I sold it and put in a decat pipe. Wire in the fans for cooling. Either disconnect the little control module inside to turn all the driving aids off or just hold in the TCS button for like 10 seconds to turn the driver aids off. On a wet track with the LSD they can do plenty of sliding, make a great noise, have to keep the revs up over 4k, but they rev all the way to 9k. So until I can afford a 350z this will be my missile, could learn in worse. If someone did aftermarket parts for them they would be alot more popular and you can always swap out the engine for something more reliable and with more torque. Good luck with it lads, looking forward to see what you do to her, the RX8 deserves more love than they get.
