Like most great experiences in life this one started out with an amazing meal. I picked up Duncan from LAX just after 8pm and we stopped at a Vietnamese restaurant on the way home. Pho Sho on Sepulveda in Los Angeles is far and above some of the best Pho you will ever taste. The freshest of fresh ingredients all melted into a bowl of the most incredible tasting broth. Add sliced jalapeño peppers, a couple splashes of Siricha and we were destined to make great music over the next few days.

We usually spend the first few hours listening, old idea’s, new idea’s and everything in between. Need to get some perspective especially before diving into writing. “Grocery List” and “Body Into Soul” from the CURVE sessions grab us right away. We’ve discussed releasing ‘Grocery list” as part of the Vault sessions but we’re second guessing that today. Both songs have something authentic and haunting that keep us coming back. 5 new idea’s to listen to. We’re good! Love it when you know right away, when you get the feeling that something special is about to happen. 2 of the 5 are instant so we make a plan on how to go about working on them. The next few hours are taken up by dissecting, philosophizing, eating, setting up some gear, playing around with the songs on acoustics…its all in the process.
Wed. Jan 28 Socal Sun is shining and coffee is on. It rained last night in Los Angeles and the day after is always staggeringly beautiful. The smog is washed away and the air is as fresh as Vancouver. Not really. This first new track we’re working on has an early 90’s lo-fi sound. The groove is reminiscent of a Stone Roses track. Steve recorded the drums at his studio in Hollywood. Always amazed at the drum beats Steve lays down. Ever since he brought in the groove to “Fire in The Henhouse” his beats never disappoint. This one is infectious and circular. Duncan lays down a sick gritty bass line. We go straight into the NEVE console and smash the gain. Cant get any more raw.This song is being birthed on the spot. There’s a great simplicity here and it feels like its not going to need much too finish. ..except some lyrics and melodies. Headphones on, I record 3 stream of conscious vocal takes and start dissecting, picking out the good parts. These are the moments i look for as an artist…when you’re able to lose yourself in it. No thinking , just reacting to the groove, feeding off the color…Its very pure. Supreme confidence in this song!

Working on an uptempo track. not sure exactly what this song wants to be as we start work on it. Theres something about the energy, It feels like a “drive fast in your car" song. Its raw and uptempo. The melodies work over a major chord progression but we decide to try a minor progression to see what it does to the sound. First few listens and I’m not sure… Interesting experiment. There’s definitely a new tension in the track playing it in B minor and as the day goes by it’s standing out as the way to go with this song. I haven’t started on a lyric yet but i like the idea of trying juxtapose the new tension with a cryptic lyric that is hopeful. I’ve been reading old issues of Adbuster’s recently. Some interesting quotes from summer 2013 issue.“on the beaches of a future that no longer exists” ….“last night i caught the restless wave of a still time”.
We’ll see where this goes….I have to figure out if its possible to be looking at despair in the face but still feel hopeful….
