A few suggestions from a fairly experienced boat owner. 1. Run a heat exchanger rather than a direct coolant system, the salt water will eat the inside of that engine in no time. 2. Mount the fuel cell centrally above the jet drive, it will keep the weight balanced as the fuel drains as well as allowing it to be further from the exhaust. 3. Get some anodes attached next to each of the engine mounts, the dissimilar metals will corrode the aluminium quicker than you think especially around the bolts. 4. Put rubber over any bare metal edges that the wiring goes over/through, it will rub through harness tape super quick. 5. Get as much weight as you can towards the bow, not only will it make you sit more balanced in the water, it will allow you to plane much more quickly. Good luck on the awesome build, looking forward to seeing her rip!

Two things I noticed for safety. First your alternator does not look to be marine ignition protected (explosion proof). If she was fueled by diesel that would not be an issue. Second look in to marine exhaust manifold requirements. If I understand properly the exhaust manifold is required to be water cooled in an enclosed space. I'm not trying to bust on you. But those two can be some real sticking points if you get boarded. As far as venting you may good to go with your idea. But most have the vents on the side with the blower vent side set to draw the air out while underway (louvers facing aft) and the intake forcing air in. But again in your application you may be fine. And your setup will keep the bilge dryer.

  • @otm646

This is super important, I've seen more than one boat blow up because somebody swapped in an automotive alternator. You forget the bilge fan just once or twice after fueling and you've got a bomb. Like black scar in the sky type bomb, this isn't a little backfire pop.

You gotta use marine-grade everything with an enclosed engine. Alternator, fuel pump, etc. every single thing needs to be marine grade so you don’t cause a fire from trapped gasoline vapors. Boat engine compartments don’t get nearly as much ventilation as cars do. Easiest solution is to just not run an engine cover. This is why people complain about boats being a PITA. Good luck sweet build!

Like a lot of others are saying - first time you slow down you'll food the engine bay with vents in the rear at any height. They're almost always mounted on the sides to avoid this. Most aren't powered with fans so they use a forward facing cowl for the inlet and a rear facing cowl on the outlet to help get some cross-flow.

  • @timothymilam732

    @timothymilam732

    2 жыл бұрын

Most of your high end bass boats have the vents on top of the the hulls one facing forward and the other to the rear to get cross flow through the battery and other components back there. Typically the fuel cells are directly under the seats, with it's own vents besides the fuel caps. The tanks go from side to side to help keep it balanced at speed when the boat is running on the two or so feet of hull they actually sit on at full speed. If you have never looked closely at a 18 to 22 foot bass boat running all out, there's not much fiberglass actually touching the waters surface, and depending on hull design and the jack plate used it could be mostly lower unit of the engine that's in the water, and that's with anywhere from 40 to 70 gallons of gasoline directly beneath the drivers, and passengers seats. That's how important the location is for your weight, and jet drive does change the dynamics of the thrust lifting of the hull , because of how close it is to the surface. Sounds like time to do some serious research into the correct placement of your fuel cells and batteries, and best place to put coolers loaded with ice maker, and really cold aluminum containers.

Growing up on the Florida lakes normally you sit on the starboard (right) side of a ski boat and jet boat. I agree that the gas tank and gas cap should go on the port side and the driver should be on the starboard side. Most docks have gas hoses that are long enough to get a cross the boat if you pull up to a dock starboard. And it’s easer to fill on the trailer when filling at the gas station.

Fun Fact: The US Navy spends 7.5 BILLION dollars DOD spends an additional 21.9 BILLION a year fighting Galvanic Corrosion, before it spends the first dime fighting anyone else! BUY ANODES! ZINC is your friend! The blower is no joke! You should have two ram air type scoops high and toward the outside of the engine compartment. Short or no duct from the scoops! Fresh ram air in, and lots of it! The blower should be mounted low but not so low it gets wet from normal water entering the boat. A SHORT STRAIGHT duct hose from the blower (OUT) to one of the exhaust vents you bought for the back. The blower NEEDS to replace the air in the engine compartment with fresh air quickly.

Do yourselves a huge favor. Make sure you add some triangulation to those motor mounts. They look exactly like engine plate style mounts, which work fine for most things. But you will definitely need some fore and aft movement protection, with how fast a boat can accelerate and decelerate. You don't wanna hit a log and have the motor slap your back. You'll also wanna run some type of heat exchanger to keep the "clean" river and ocean water from clogging up the engine water passages.

Run the steel mounts for now to get everything mocked up but come back and do aluminum. You can weld 1/2 inch plate to the boat rails and make it much much stronger than just having it tapped into the 1/4 inch runners.

My favorite project going so far! One word on the water-in coming from the jet drive. It's a good idea to run a gate valve at the pump to help fine tune the water pressure coming in. On the coolant exit from the engine it should go straight off the back of the boat, with a gate valve to control the exit as well. The jet drive can pump hundreds of PSI through the water outlet (inboard side), and it's easy to accidentally blow a head gasket or intake gasket

I would install 2 fans on the boat. One to pull fresh air in and the other with tubing to get as low as possible within the engine bay to pull bad air out. Wouldn’t mount the vents on the back as that has caused boats to swamp/sink in the past. Really awesome build though, can’t wait to see it run and then for the Turbo/Turbos to be installed.

Like many others have said, I’d skip out on the raw water coolant system. Save yourself the headache and run a closed system especially on a k series without corrosion inhibitors. You’d be surprised how much gunk and deposits get in there, even in fresh water never mind what salt water will do to it. You can install flush ports but even then your making more work for yourself after a day on the water, and definitely long term. Also, a closed system will allow you to reach higher engine temps which will help when trying to make power. Last thing to consider is block pressure. Closed systems generally maintain pressure while open can get pretty high under power. If I understand this channel correctly I’m pretty sure that motor will be having enough boost put through it already 😂 Sick build tho

Need to hook up the electric water pump, even if you cool it with the jet thrust. Just set it 5 degrees higher, so it never comes on, unless you are sitting and idling in neutral..

from alaska built about 20 of these various types of powerplants from mercs to waverunner motors to ls and diesels. a anode works anywhere.. fuel tank works best center mounted mid hull reduces plowing and helps step. cooling has be closed loop on the engine side... a heat exchanger is def recommended... i weld on trim tabs from .25 alum strong tac inline with hull tap up as you test step and wot then weld in place. i like my vents side mounted as dry exhaust is rear. oh yea forgot to say awesome videos and your build gunna give cleeter and all them the smoke.

I build boats and custom hotrods for a living and just my opinion but you really need to build a jacketed water cooled exhaust manifold, haveing a dry exhaust in a small boat is incredibly difficult to keep compartment temps down enough to keep from igniting things and burning up electronics. Im also fairly certain the USCG requires heavy flame retardent covers on any kind of dry exhaust system and the exhaust is required to be a certain distance from flammable materials. Building a jacketed water cooled header for a K-series I would think wouldn't be too difficult and would keep you from having headaches in the future.

How about "No One has to Die" for the name of the boat? The wrap? How about a James Bond 007 theme? The boat is way outside the box, so the 007 Bond theme would be pretty cool. Pay close attention to any attachment bolts, nuts, etc. It's critical you keep everything protected from harmonics, vibrations,*chafing, etc. [ *wiring ]. I recommend you follow Charle's advice on anti-corrosion control. I also recommend you have a master battery power switch on the dash to kill all power and a kill switch in the event you get thrown out of the boat. Don't forget the fire extinguishers and **life jackets as well; god forbid someone gets **thrown out of the boat and gets **knocked out or breaks a leg, arm. Good luck, guys.

Pro tip on an alternator for these. Most come with a Mitsubishi brand that are completely horrible. Grab one from a 04-06 TSX. They’re a Denso. You’ll need two longer bolts for the housing to bolt to the block and have to extend the harness clip.

If your exhaust is going to come out the back I'd add a baffle to keep water from coming in when u are parked or launching the boat. I believe the best way to check that is to make sure there is a high point in ur exhaust above what the draft level of the boat is.
